Waiver Wired: Lucic rebound

Sunday, October 7, 2018

Waiver Wired is back! It’s great to see Winnipeg’s Kyle Connor with an 88% ownership in Yahoo leagues this season. He hovered around 30% and less than 50% for most of the 2017-18 campaign, but he appeared frequently on Waiver Wired over the course of the season. Finding another player like that will be our priority again, as we work through 2018-19.

Don't be afraid to make changes early if some of the players you took fliers on in your drafts aren't working out.  Just make sure to exercise some patience if more established players are off to sluggish starts.  If someone like that appears on waivers then they could be worth scooping up.

Thomas Chabot (OTT) - D - Owned in 33% of Yahoo leagues

Chabot has big skates to fill following Erik Karlsson’s trade to San Jose and he will be counted upon to lead offensively from the back end this year. He has been great early in the year with two goals and two assists in the first two games of the 2018-19 campaign. Chabot has been dangerous jumping into the attack and his power-play responsibilities are sure to increase if he continues to generate offense like this. He was the star of Saturday’s win over Toronto with a pair of goals and one assist.

Milan Lucic (EDM) - LW - Owned in 31% of Yahoo leagues

Lucic had a season to forget in 2017-18 with 10 goals and 34 points in 82 games. However, he had a strong start Saturday in Edmonton’s season opener with one goal, one assist and three hits. Lucic, who feels his past wrist issues are behind him, played mostly alongside Leon Draisaitl during his time at even strength and he logged time on the Oilers’ top power-play unit, which gave him exposure to Connor McDavid. The big winger will be good for 200-plus hits this year and if he can return to the 20-goal and 50-point milestones then he would certainly be worth rostering again in the majority of standard leagues.

Josh Bailey (NYI) - RW - Owned in 30% of Yahoo leagues

It was thought by many that Bailey would lose significant fantasy value with John Tavares no longer on the Islanders, but he is doing his best to prove those doubters wrong early in the year. Bailey has collected one goal and two assists in two contests to start the 2018-19 campaign. He has been clicking alongside Mathew Barzal on the top line. Part of the reason why pundits were down on Bailey entering the year was the thought of him playing on the second unit, but Jordan Eberle was dropped to that spot instead.

Jakob Silfverberg (ANA) - RW - Owned in 30% of Yahoo leagues

Silfverberg collected three assists in Anaheim’s season opener and he added another helper on Saturday night. He has been skating alongside Adam Henrique and Maxime Comtois on the second line of the Ducks. Silfverberg also occupies a spot on the top power-play unit with Ryan Getzlaf, who was injured on Saturday, and Rickard Rakell. He picked up two of his three helpers on man-advantage situations versus the San Jose Sharks.

Elias Lindholm (CGY) - C, RW - Owned in 30% of Yahoo leagues

Lindholm was quiet in his season debut with Calgary, but he erupted for two goals and one assist in Saturday’s 7-4 win over Vancouver. He also posted five shots and four hits in the contest. Lindholm has been playing alongside Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau, so he was bound to break out eventually. If he can cement a spot on the top combination of the Flames then he should comfortably surpass the 20-goal mark and the 50-point plateau for the first time in his career.

James Reimer (FLA) - G - Owned in 28% of Yahoo leagues

Reimer entered Saturday’s game in relief after veteran netminder Roberto Luongo was forced to leave because of a lower-body injury. The Panthers will know about Luongo’s status on Sunday, but Reimer makes for a solid pickup as a handcuff for Luongo owners or as a depth option at this time.

Jeff Petry (MTL) - D - Owned in 21% of Yahoo leagues

Petry contributed two assists in Saturday’s win over Pittsburgh. He has logged over 20 minutes of ice time in each of his first two outings this season, while seeing time on the power play and penalty kill. Petry has generated four shots, six hits and two blocks. He will play in all situations and have a key role on the Canadiens until Shea Weber returns to action, so he is worth rostering.

Alexander Edler (VAN) - D - Owned in 18% of Yahoo leagues

Edler is already reaping the the rewards of a more dynamic power play for the Vancouver Canucks. The addition of rookie Elias Pettersson, who has jumped to a 63% ownership in Yahoo leagues, has elevated the top unit early in the year and Edler earned two assists on the man advantage in Saturday’s game versus Calgary. Edler has also been credited with 12 blocks through two games.

Micheal Ferland (CAR) - LW, RW - Owned in 12% of Yahoo leagues

Ferland, much like his Carolina teammates, didn’t get much done offensively in his debut with the Hurricanes, but he notched one goal and one assist on Friday night against Columbus. He was also credited with six shots in the contest. Ferland has accounted for seven shots, five hits and one block, meaning he can provide some pretty good category coverage. He has been skating alongside Sebastian Aho and Teuvo Teravainen on the team’s top line. Ferland gained plenty of value last year with the Calgary Flames when he played with Gaudreau and Monahan. He is being placed in a similarly great situation to succeed with Carolina.

Conor Sheary (BUF) - LW, RW - Owned in 9% of Yahoo leagues

Sheary moved to a line with Jack Eichel and Sam Reinhart in the second game of the season. He also logged time on the top power-play unit, which is where he scored a pair of goals in a 3-1 win against the New York Rangers. He saw time alongside Sidney Crosby when he was a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins and before the Sabres acquired Jeff Skinner it was believed he would get a shot with Eichel. It didn’t take long for coach Phil Housley to make the change and Sheary is worth considering because of it.
