Power Rankings: Week 2

Tuesday, October 9, 2018

There's a lot of movement this week and that is normal as it is the first week of the season. Vegas and San Jose had huge drops in the rankings while Dallas shot up the board.

1. Tampa Bay

Record: 1-0-0

Last Week 1

The Lightning only played once last week and won a shootout over their cross-state rivals, the Florida Panthers. The Lightning are still the best team in the league and deserve the top ranking.

2. Winnipeg

Record: 1-1-0

Last Week 2

The Jets got off to a nice start by beating the Blues 5-1 before dropping a 5-1 decision to Dallas. Connor Hellebuyck looked superb in the opener but was less sharp against the Stars. The Jets' big gins are averaging a point-per-game but did most of their damage against the Blues.

3. Nashville

Record: 2-0-0

Last Week 5

The Predators won both of their games this past week as they invaded New York and beat both the Rangers and the Islanders. They play their next four at home so that should help. They have already split their goaltending starts so expect to see Juuse Saros more often this season. Colton Sissons is tied for the scoring lead with P.K. Subban at three points.

4. Dallas

Record: 2-0-0

Last Week 13

The Stars make the biggest jump up the standings as they received amazing goaltending from Ben Bishop who stopped 62-of-63 shots. He shut out the Coyotes and then played great in a 5-1 win over Winnipeg. The top line of Tyler Seguin, Alexander Radulov and Jamie Benn combined for 13 points in the first two games. Connor Carrick who Dallas picked up from the Maple Leafs, has three assists.

5. Boston

Record: 2-1-0

Last Week 6

After getting outplayed all over the ice in the opener, losing 7-0 to Washington, the Bruins have rebounded with a couple of wins over Buffalo and Ottawa. Brad Marchand has seven assists in his last two games after picking up 19 penalty minutes in the opener. Tuukka Rask has not been sharp in his first two starts while Jaroslav Halak had a shutout in his only start.

6. Toronto

Record: 2-1-0

Last Week 4

The record looks good until you go a bit deeper and see both wins were in overtime against Montreal and Chicago and they lost to lowly Ottawa at home. The Maple Leafs offense is firing on all cylinders with 13 goals in three games, led by Auston Matthews five goals and eight points, along with John Tavares who has found the back of the net four times. Morgan Rielly has two goals and six points in three games. The Leafs have a tough battle in Dallas on Tuesday.

7. Washington

Record: 1-0-1

Last Week 7

The Capitals opened up with a shocking 7-0 win over Boston but fell back to Earth with a 7-6 overtime loss to Pittsburgh the next night. Braden Holtby looked so good in the first game but not so much in the second. It was that kind of inconsistency that made him a mediocre goalie last season in the regular season.  T.J. Oshie has five points in his first two games after a so-so 2017-18 campaign.

8. Pittsburgh

Record: 1-1-0

Last Week 8

Another Jekyll and Hyde team as they knocked off the Stanley Cup Champions before dropping a 5-1 decision to Montreal. Matt Murray is continuing his poor play from last season and is becoming a middle of the pack goaltender at best after the Penguins thought they had a star after he led them to a couple of Stanley Cups. He has a 5.45 GAA and a .831 save percentage. Kris Letang leads the way with four points including two goals.

9. Anaheim

Record: 3-0-0

Last Week 11

Despite losing Corey Perry, Patrick Eaves, Ondrej Kase and now Ryan Getzlaf to injuries, the Ducks are a perfect 3-0. John Gibson has given up only four goals on 95 shots and that helps. Jakob Silfverberg has taken control of the offense with five points. Look for the Ducks to return to form but enjoy this ride for now.

10. San Jose

Record: 1-2-0

Last Week 3

The Sharks did not look good this week as they dropped a couple of games to Anaheim and the New York Islanders and beating Los Angeles in overtime. Joe Thornton has an infection in his knee and should return soon. Wait for Erik Karlsson to get comfortable and watch the Sharks go. Martin Jones has a 3.03 GAA and a .859 save percentage.
