The Roundtable: Week 14

Monday, January 7, 2019

This week’s question is:

With Elias Pettersson on the sidelines with a knee injury, who is currently the second-best rookie?

Ryan: There's a big gap between Elias Pettersson and any other forward, but defenseman Miro Heiskanen is having a great rookie season in Dallas.  He has nine goals and 19 points in 42 games, which isn't enough to make him a serious Calder contender compared to Pettersson, but is still impressive for a rookie blueliner.  He's also been logging 23:00 minutes per game, making him easily the rookie leader in that category.

Corey: I like Brady Tkachuk of the Ottawa Senators because of the wide category coverage he provides. He has 10 goals, 20 points, 44 penalty minutes, 68 hits and 84 shots in 32 games.  That makes a solid fantasy contributor as well.  Miro Heiskanen and Rasmus Dahlin would be next line because they been great on the back end and have played key roles for the Dallas Stars and Buffalo Sabres, respectively.

Daniel: Andrei Svechnikov was the second player taken in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, and he is second among rookies with 11 goals, behind only Pettersson. He continues to roll along in a top-six job in Raleigh, and he ranks sixth among rookies in total points tied with Ryan's boy, Heiskanen. I also considered Heiskanen and Rasmus Dahlin, but they've been a little less consistent lately. The Russian teen has had his issues with consistency recently, too, managing just a goal and no assists across the past eight outings. However, he was on a four-game heater from Dec. 13-20, giving fantasy owners and Hurricanes a glimpse of the future. He has point-per-game ability, and he could realize it more down the stretch as he continues to get more comfortable in the North American game.

Brian: I was going to go with Heiskanen before Ryan mentioned him, but I'm equally as impressed with Rasmus Dahlin. Even though he has struggled in his last five games (zero points) Dahlin is still the rookie defensemen scoring leader with 20 points in 42 games. He also tops all rearguards with eight points on the power play and is one of the better plus/minus rookies, with a plus-two rating.

Joey: I'll go with the player who took Pettersson out, Jesperi Kotkaniemi. He's been on the Canadiens' third line for most of the season, but what he's been able to accomplish as an 18-year-old is pretty remarkable. He's been a lot better in the faceoff circle, he has great offensive instincts and his hockey IQ is off the charts. Kotkaniemi is on pace for nearly 40 points right now, and I think he'll get more and more comfortable as the season progresses.

Michael: I was going to go with Rasmus Dahlin and I think he is going to be a star in the NHL and perhaps a superstar, but the player who I’ve been impressed with lately is Andreas Johnsson. He started off very slow with only two goals and three points in his first 18 games but has been a stud of late with seven goals and 16 points in his last 18 contests. That is not as good as Pettersson but it is the best pace of any other rookie this season. He is playing with Auston Matthews and that cannot hurt.
