 Cubs' Lilly undergoes shoulder surgery
Lilly
Ted Lilly could miss the start of 2010 after undergoing shoulder surgery on Tuesday, the Cubs announced.
In a release, the Cubs said Dr. Lewis Yocum "found no major damage to Lilly’s shoulder and the procedure consisted of a washout and cleanup of the shoulder" and that the surgery took about one hour. Still, Lilly probably won't be 100 percent for the start of spring training and could miss a portion of April. That's not such a bad thing for the Cubs. Lilly might be healthier at the end of next season than he was this year if he gets off to a late start. Nov. 4 - 5:06 pm et

Report: Rays hoping to extend OF Crawford
Crawford
According to Joe Smith of the St. Petersburg Times, the Rays have expressed interest in signing Carl Crawford to a contract extension.
Crawford has just one year remaining on his current deal. He's given the Rays excellent production for the last several seasons and hit .305/.364/.452 in 2009 with a career-high 60 stolen bases. The price tag will be very high, but he is well worth the investment. Nov. 22 - 4:53 pm et

Report: Mets only have $20 million to spend
Santana
Bill Madden of the New York Daily News says the Mets will have about $20 million to spend this offseason.
Madden says the Mets are certain to reduce their $147 million payroll and should be counted out of the Lackey, Holliday and Bay sweepstakes. Madden goes on to say that second-tier free agents should be their focus with priorities being left-field and two starting pitchers, naming Jason Marquis specifically. We're not sold that the Mets will walk away from the premier free agents just yet. Nov. 22 - 11:12 am et

Sheffield wants to play for 3,000 hits
Gary Sheffield is dedicated to playing in 2010.
Sheffield's family wants him to reach 3,000 hits for his career (currently at 2,689) and Sheff wouldn't rule out cranking 40 home runs next year. Delusional much? With the overall shift to younger players, Sheffield may not find the playing time he wants next year -- certainly not for a drive to 3,000 over the next few years. Looks like Sheff will be forced into retirement kicking and screaming at some point. Nov. 22 - 8:38 am et

Royals consider Mets in hunt for Jose Guillen
The Royals have identified the Mets as a possible trading partner for Jose Guillen, reports Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News.
The Mets would reportedly only consider Guillen if they miss out on Jason Bay and Matt Holliday. With $12 million remaining in the last year of the contract, the Royals would have to eat a significant chunk of salary to even get the Mets to return phone calls. If there's a fit, the Royals would like a young outfielder in return and are eyeing Angel Pagan. We don't see a fit here; the Mets can just sign a second-tier outfielder for short money and retain Pagan either way. Nov. 22 - 8:33 am et

 Contreras considering move to Japan?
Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker reports that Jose Contreras is seeking employment in Japan.
There was a report of Contreras reaching out to the Hanshin Tigers earlier this week, but the rumors hold more weight now that we learn his 16-year-old son is hoping to take part in an exchange program with a high school in Japan. The 37-year-old right-hander is expected to visit Japan next week, with the SoftBank Hawks and Hiroshima Carp as the most likely landing spots, based on geography, according to Newman.  Report: Yankees priority is re-signing Damon
Damon
Ken Davidoff of Newsday reports that the Yankees' priority right now is re-signing Johnny Damon, with Hideki Matsui on the back-burner.
Even though Matsui turned heads in the World Series, Damon is the better property going forward considering he can hold his own in the field. Agent Scott Boras is pushing for a four-year deal, but we can't see anything more than two years. The Yankees and Damon should be able to come to an agreement fairly shortly, freeing up resources to devote to the free agent market. Nov. 21 - 12:56 pm et

Aroldis Chapman swiches agent to Hendricks
Jorge Arangure of ESPN tweets that free agent Aroldis Chapman is now represented by Randy and Alan Hendricks.
Chapman's previous agent was Edwin Mejia of Athletes Premier International. Other clients of the Hendricks brothers include Kendry Morales and Andy Pettitte. There is no word as to the reasoning of the switch, but it would be logical to assume that the process will now be far more streamlined as the Hendricks are veterans in the business while Meija and API started in 2006. Still, the timing is a bit curious. Nov. 21 - 12:25 pm et

Rogers: Cubs not moving Castro for Granderson
Granderson
Phil Rogers says that many in the Cubs front office feel it would be "foolish" to trade prospect Starlin Castro to Detroit for Curtis Granderson.
Castro has quickly established himself as the best Cubs prospect after his showing in the Arizona Fall League. Granderson, conversely, has been one of the best centerfielders in the game (against right-handed pitching) and is thought to be available. Rogers, who writes for the Chicago Tribune, says that Cubs GM Jim Hendry "appreciates" what Granderson brings to the table and wonders if new hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo could help address Granderson's platoon issues. If the Cubs won't give Castro up in a Granderson deal, it will be extremely tough to pull off. Nov. 21 - 9:02 am et

 Jays discussing Halladay with Dodgers
Halladay
Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports cites a source who says the Blue Jays and Dodgers have resumed talks of a possible Roy Halladay trade.
Brown adds that it looks like new general manger Alex Anthopoulos "is restarting the process of moving Doc." Earlier today, in a report from Carrie Muskat of MLB.com, we learned that the Blue Jays told the Cubs that they intend to move the 32-year-old right-hander this winter. Of the teams linked in conversation regarding Halladay, the Dodgers may need Halladay the most. Nov. 20 - 9:38 pm et
