Scioscia wins AL Manager of the Year
Mike Scioscia was elected the AL Manager of the Year, after receiving 15 of 28 first-place votes.
Scioscia led the Angels to their third straight division title, their fifth in the past six seasons, despite a rash of injuries and the tragic death of pitcher Nick Adenhart in early April. Though the Angels fell to the Yankees in the ALCS, Scioscia is the first manager to lead his team to the playoffs six times in his first 10 years as manager. This is Scioscia's second recognition as AL Manager of the Year, as he also took home the award when the Angels won the World Series in 2002. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire came in a close second, earning six first place votes, while Joe Girardi, Don Wakamatsu, Ron Washington and Jim Leyland rounded out the AL ballot.

Report: Damon still demanding 2-year contract
Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that fee agent outfielder Johnny Damon has not moved off his demand of a two-year contract.
And look where that has got him and agent Scott Boras. The Tigers, Rays and Braves appear to be in the mix for Damon, but obviously none of the three have met Damon's lofty demands yet. "We continue to monitor everything," Tigers club president/general manager Dave Dombrowski said. "I am not sure if we are close on anything."

Report: Mets close to signing 1B Mike Jacobs
The Mets are close to an agreement with free agent first baseman Mike Jacobs on a minor league contract, reports ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.
He would get an invite to spring training as a non-roster invitee. Jacobs hit just .228/.297/.401 and struck out 132 times in 434 at-bats last year for the Royals, but he has a career .830 OPS against righties and boasts a decent amount of power. As far as no-risk fliers go, this is a decent one -- it wouldn't be shocking to see Jacobs enter into a platoon in New York.

Report: Wang to make decision soon
A source tells Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com that free agent right-hander Chien-Ming Wang will decide on a new team in the next 7 to 10 days.
While the Mets and the Dodgers are lagging behind, Wang has received offers from a pair of unnamed clubs, according to Rosenthal. Various teams, including the Orioles, have expressed interest in the 29-year-old, although he is expected to miss the early part of the season as he rehabs from shoulder surgery.

Shields (knee) to miss opening of spring camp
Scot Shields (knee) has not been cleared to begin a throwing program and is likely to miss the start of spring training.
Shields underwent knee surgery late last season. "I don't know how quickly I'll get on a mound. We'll probably have to take it slow," the setup man said Monday. "We've got a whole month-and-a-half or two months to get ready. ... I know my body. It's close to being 100 percent and we've still got two months." He's aiming to be ready for full-time action by Opening Day -- April 5.

Cards, Schumaker reach two-year extension
The Cardinals and second baseman Skip Schumaker avoided arbitration Monday by agreeing to a two-year contract extension.
The exact financial terms have not yet been disclosed, but Schumaker asked for $2.75 million and was offered $1.45 million from the Cardinals when arbitration figures were exchanged in mid-January. Skip, a 29-year-old converted outfielder, batted .303/.364/.393 with four home runs, 35 RBI and 85 runs scored last season. The new contract covers his first two years of arbitration eligibility. He's under team control through 2012.

Cliff Lee undergoes minor left foot procedure
Cliff Lee underwent minor surgery Monday to remove a loose bone spur in his left foot, according to the Tacoma News Tribune's Ryan Divish.
Lee pitched well into the 2009 postseason and showed no foot issues, so it's probably safe to trust that the procedure was indeed minor. The 31-year-old was 14-13 with a 3.22 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and six complete games between the Indians and Phillies last year. He's expected to resume baseball activities in two-to-three weeks and should be fine by Opening Day.

Yankees add to OF puzzle, ink Marcus Thames
Yankees signed outfielder Marcus Thames to a minor league contract.
Thames receives $900,000 if he makes the major league roster out of spring training, which he will be invited to. He will compete with Randy Winn and Brett Gardner for playing time, as well as provide an extra right-handed bat in the outfield. Thames is a poor defensive outfielder, but he rocks left-handed pitching to the tune of an .845 career OPS. Originally drafted by the Yankees in 1996, Thames batted .252/.323/.453 with 13 home runs in 258 at-bats last season for the Tigers. Detroit released him in early November.

Carlos Beltran 'furious' with Mets
Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes that Carlos Beltran (knee) is furious with the Mets.
Sherman writes that Beltran wonders if he should have played at all last season and therefore doesn't expect him to prioritize the team this time around. How he knows exactly what is going on in Beltran's head is anybody's guess, but the Mets will have to get by with Angel Pagan and Gary Matthews Jr. in center field for at least a little while.

Report: Dodgers ink Brian Giles to deal
MLB.com's Ken Gurnick reports that the Dodgers have signed OF Brian Giles to a minor league contract.
Giles hit .191/.277/.271 in a forgettable 225 at-bats with the Padres this past year, limited to 61 games due to a knee contusion. He'll compete with Jason Repko and Xavier Paul for the fifth outfielder's spot along with Doug Mientkiewicz for the lefty pinch-hitter role. If he makes the team, it'll be at a $550,000 base salary with an additional $200,000 in incentives and can opt out of his contract at the end of spring training if he doesn't crack the roster. Despite his awful year, he remains one of the better players in the game in working a walk and should have enough pop left to be a major-league contributor.
