Mickelson injures wrist, out at Memorial
Phil Mickelson withdrew from the Memorial during the 11th hole of his first round on Thursday with a left wrist injury.
He said he was playing well and had it dialed in before aggravating the injury on the 11th hole. Mickelson says that he still has mobility in the wrist, but he can't put any pressure on it. He is scheduled to see a specialist on Friday and is still hoping to be ready to play in the U.S. Open at Oakmont. But this is devastating news for owners who used him in fantasy leagues this week.

Scan reveals stretched ligaments for McIlroy
Rory McIlroy learned that he has stretched ligaments from Monday's back scan.
McIlroy's agent, Chubby Chandler, told the Associated Press that his client is still a go for next week's WGC-Match Play. McIlroy will rest and receive therapy in advance of his first start as a member of the PGA Tour. Chandler added that the 20-year-old gets an annual exam on his back as a precaution. Clearly, youth cannot overcome overuse, so McIlroy will need to do a better job of moderating practice with competition. This could very well be his greatest challenge as he juggles two tours this year.

McIlroy schedules visit to back specialist
Rory McIlroy was to meet with a back specialist in Belfast today.
"My back has been bothering me for a few days now so that's why I am going for scan," McIlroy said. "... I've had the problem for a while, and it's just whenever I undertake a lot of practice. I've been out in the Middle-East for four weeks so I think it's just a repetitive injury and comes from hitting a lot of balls, and it just niggles a little bit." He is planning to begin his U.S.-based schedule at next week's WGC-Match Play. "I can still swing the club OK, but bending down and doing things like putting and picking the ball out of the cup hurts. The scan is precautionary and I get one every year and I will be fine for the Match Play. I just need to give it some rest."

Woods' caddie rebukes rumor on WGC-MP return
Steve Williams flat-out denied the recent rumor that his boss, Tiger Woods, will return to competition at next week's WGC-Match Play.
"The stories stating Tiger will return at the matchplay have no truth to them," Williams told the Sydney Morning Herald. He didn't elaborate but it may mean nothing. Moreover, acknowledgment of Williams' words as truth assume that he's still employed by the world's #1. Golfers have until 5:00 p.m. ET this Friday to commit to the Match Play. That will provide the definitive evidence of Woods' decision.

Steve Stricker wins the Northern Trust Open
Steve Stricker posted a final round of 1-under-par 70 and won the Northern Trust Open by two strokes over Luke Donald.
Stricker started with a six-stroke advantage, but the lead evaporated to two-strokes after the first five holes. He continued to cling to a two-stroke lead going into the eighth hole, where he was able to string constitutive birdies to go 1-under-par for the opening nine with a four-stroke lead. On the bank nine, Luke Donald had a number of birdie opportunities, but he could only chip into the lead with birdies at the 13th and 17th hole. The final hole saw both players reach the green in regulation, then two-putt for pars, which was good for a two-stroke victory for Stricker. The victory is the eighth career PGA Tour championship for Stricker and he now has passed Phil Mickelson for the number two spot in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Miguel A. Jimenez wins Dubai Desert Classic
Miguel Angel Jimenez posted a final round of even-par 72 and on the third playoff hole won the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.
Jimenez birdied the 17th hole of his final round and then watched as Lee Westwood birdied the final hole to force a two-man playoff. Westwood had a chance to win on the first playoff hole, but his nine-foot birdie putt slid by the hole. Jimenez continued the playoff after a clutch 18-foot par putt on the second playoff hole and then sealed the championship on the next hole with a five-foot par putt. The victory is the ninth for Jimenez since he turned 40 years old and he has become the oldest player to win on the European Tour since Mark O'Meara won in Dubai in 2004 . It is also notable that 60-year-old Tom Watson finished with a round of 4-under-par 68, earning a very respectable tie for eighth place.

Karlsson and Quiros to play Waste Management
Robert Karlsson and Alvaro Quiros have been given sponsor exemptions for the Waste Management Open on Feb. 25-28.
The non-members will exhaust two of the eight provided. Four others will go to Rickie Fowler, Rocco Mediate, Billy Mayfair and Jonathan Kaye. On Jan. 27,
we relayed to you (via PGATour.com)
that
Martin Kaymer
was planning on teeing it up as well at TPC Scottsdale, but that was not verified in today's report at AZCentral.com. Karlsson and Quiros will be making their first career appearances at the event.

Villegas one of last holdouts to start 2010
Camilo Villegas has yet to tee it up on the PGA Tour in 2010.
And he didn't enter next week's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am either. The Colombian played in the first two events on the European Tour's Desert Swing, posting finishes of T19 (Abu Dhabi) and T9 (Qatar). He won't make his 2010 PGA Tour debut until the WGC-Match Play in two weeks. It's the latest he's ever started his U.S. schedule. Notables with PGA Tour cards (not on medical extensions) that have yet to appear this year and will not play Pebble Beach include Tiger Woods (personal reasons), Ian Poulter (started '08 and '09 at the Match Play), Trevor Immelman (recovery from wrist surgery), Arron Oberholser, Henrik Stenson, Jeev Milkha Singh and Rory McIlroy.

Oberholser won't play Pebble Beach yet again
Arron Oberholser is not listed in the published field of next week's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
The 2006 champ of this event has yet to actually "defend" that title due to injuries over the past four years. His absence puts to rest speculation that he'd make his 2010 debut at the event. We'll now focus on the Waste Management Open on Feb. 25-28. Phoenix' KTAR.com
reported on Jan. 20
that AO will tee it up at the newly sponsored tour stop.

Newest rumor: Woods will not enter Match Play
According to a report at FOXNews.com, Tiger Woods is not expected to compete in the WGC-Match Play on Feb. 17-21.
You saw this coming we're sure. More unnamed "sources" continue to speculate on Woods' schedule. If Woods ever returns to competitive golf, he will most likely issue a press release on his web site, just as he did a year ago after returning from reconstructive knee surgery. There is a chance that a tournament director will learn ahead of the press, but Woods would likely still announce the news first. Phil Mickelson has already stated that he will not compete in the Match Play, so Steve Stricker or Lee Westwood would likely assume the role as the #1 overall seed. The Official World Golf Ranking on Monday, Feb. 8, will determine the brackets.
