 Shane Vereen - RBFeb. 9 - 10:30 am et
ESPN's Ted Miller states incoming running back Trajuan Briggs could serve as Shane Vereen's backup next fall.
Vereen should be the next in a long line of great fantasy backs from Cal.  And if tradition holds true, Briggs could follow.

 Jahvid Best - RBJan. 2 - 4:15 pm et
Cal running back Jahvid Best will announce his intentions to enter the NFL draft, sources say.
This was probably expected to start the year, and even more so after Best's scary fall during the season.  The Bears' running game is in good hands with Shane Vereen, and we wish Jahvid the best.

 Kevin Riley - QBDec. 24 - 11:15 am et
Cal quarterback Kevin Riley threw for 214 yards and a touchdown while being intercepted twice in a Poinsettia Bowl loss to Utah.
Riley, a junior, had a steady but unspectacular season for the Bears and just may see some competition from the 6-foot-5 Brock Mansion come April.

 Shane Vereen - RBDec. 24 - 11:15 am et
Cal running back Shane Vereen ran for 122 yards and two scores in a loss to Utah in the Poinsettia Bowl.
Vereen proved his worth after Jahvid Best was injured, and if we assume Best departs for Sunday glory, Vereen looks plenty capable of carrying the Cal running back torch.

 Jahvid Best - RBDec. 17 - 9:45 am et
Cal running back Jahvid Best (back) has been officially ruled out of the Poitsettia Bowl, thus we may have seen the of this dynamic runner in college.
Best has requested an evaluation by the NFL Draft Advisory Committee, and there appears a decent chance that he'll move on to the pros.

 Jahvid Best - RBDec. 7 - 11:00 am et
Utah and Cal will play in the S.D. County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 23 at 8 p.m.
The big question deal with whether or not Cal running back Jahvid Best play?  Best has missed the last three games recovering from a back injury suffered against Oregon State on Nov. 7.  Cal Running back Shane Vereen and Utah running back Eddie Wide will should also draw attention from fantasy owners in this one.

 Jahvid Best - RBDec. 2 - 8:15 am et
Cal running back Jahvid Best (back) has yet to return to practice and has been ruled for Saturday's game against Washington.  "Jahvid hasn't had any (concussion) symptoms for a couple of weeks, but we're making sure he's 100 percent completely clear," Tedford said. "His back is still a problem."
It remains to be seen if Best will be able to return for a bowl game.

 Jahvid Best - RBNov. 30 - 8:15 pm et
Cal running back Jahvid Best (concussion/back) did not practice on Sunday and coach Jeff Tedford says they haven't even discussed the possibility of Best playing Saturday against Washington.
It seems unlikely the Best will play this weekend.  We'll have to wait and see if Best can return for the Bears' bowl game.

 Shane Vereen - RBNov. 22 - 2:45 pm et
Cal running back Shane Vereen carried a whopping 42 times for 193 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Stanford.
The coaching staff clearly has a lot of faith in Vereen, as he now has 72 carries in the last two games.  He is making the most of them, and while no one can replace the dynamic Jahvid Best, Vereen is a darn good running back in his own right.

 Jahvid Best - RBNov. 18 - 10:30 pm et
"I'm just trying to take it day by day and hoping for the best," Cal running back Jahvid Best (back/concussion) said. "Every day I'm feeling a little better. I'm hoping it keeps progressing that way and hopefully I'll be out here pretty soon."
Best will not play this weekend against Stanford, and it seems unlikely that he would play on Dec. 5 against Washington, but anything is possible.

 Anthony Miller - TENov. 16 - 9:15 pm et
Cal tight end Anthony Miller (knee) is expected to play against Stanford this weekend.
The sophomore could make a decent last-minute waiver wire selection in Pac-10 leagues.

 Jahvid Best - RBNov. 16 - 9:15 pm et
Cal coach Jeff Tedford told The San Jose Mercury News that there is "no chance" that running back Jahvid Best (concussion) will play against Stanford.
This news was expected, though there still appears a chance that Cal's dynamic tailback will play in the bowl game.

 Shane Vereen - RBNov. 15 - 8:00 am et
Cal running back Shane Vereen carried 30 times for 161 yards and a touchdown.
We all still wish Jahvid Best a speedy recovery, but this is the harsh world of football.  Vereen and the Bear running game didn't miss a beat, and with Best being doubtful to play again this season, Vereen looks like a great late season addition, and an even better keeper option.

 Jahvid Best - RBNov. 12 - 3:15 pm et
Cal running back Jahvid Best was back on campus receiving treatment on his sore back on Wednesday from the Bears' training staff.
Best has not yet returned to class following his leaping end zone dive last Saturday and coach Jeff Tedford said he was "moving a little slow." It is unlikely we'll see Best on the field again this season, but it is good to hear that he is up and about.

 Jahvid Best - RBNov. 11 - 8:45 am et
ESPN.com's Ted Miller reports that Cal running back Jahvid Best (concussion) is recovering at home and not going to class, thus his availability for the rest of the season is in question.
Clearly the most important thing is for Best to get healthy, and based on coach Jeff Tedford's comments it doesn't sound like he may return at all in 2009. Shane Vereen will see more carries in Best's absence, though no team can come close to replacing what #4 brings.

 Jahvid Best - RBNov. 9 - 12:15 am et
Cal running back Jahvid Best was released from the hospital Sunday after suffering a concussion on a touchdown run in Saturday's game. Best will miss at least one game.
Best was held overnight for observation and testing. We're wishing him a speedy recovery after a truly scary moment this weekend.

 Jahvid Best - RBNov. 7 - 10:15 pm et
California running back Jahvid Best was injured on his touchdown run with 6:07 to go in the second quarter against Oregon State and was taken to the hospital.
If you have a weak stomach, I suggest not watching the highlights.  Best leaped over a defender to score the touchdown, and landed squarely on the upper part of his back/neck area.  Oregon State players immediately formed a prayer in the end zone and Best was taken off on a stretcher with oxygen to assist his breathing.  Nobody likes to see injuries like this, we hope he is okay. UPDATE: Best has a concussion and has movement in his arms and legs per FSN announcers working the game.

 Jahvid Best - RBNov. 6 - 6:00 pm et
Cal running back Jahvid Best practiced Thursday, and is expected to start Saturday against Oregon State.
Not much information out there regarding Best's headaches.  Either they aren't serious at all, or its a bluff and Shane Vereen sees lots of carries this weekend.  So, are you feeling lucky?  I am...Best shouldn't be limited.

 Jahvid Best - RBNov. 5 - 2:00 pm et
Cal running back Jahvid Best has missed the last two practices due to a mild concussion suffered in last week's game against Arizona State, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Best doesn't believe he'll miss this weekend's matchup with Oregon State, but any time I hear "concussion" and "missed practice," alarms go off.  Don't panic yet, but make sure he is back on the practice field before Saturday.

 Kevin Riley - QBNov. 1 - 7:45 pm et
Cal quarterback Kevin Riley completed 27 of 44 passes for 351 yards and two touchdowns at  Arizona State.
This was Riley's first 300-yard effort, and after having only five touchdowns through Cal's first five games, Riley now has eight in his last three contests.  Riley has only been intercepted twice all year, and looks like a sneakily steady play out west.
