 Scott Schoeneweis - RFeb. 9 - 2:39 pm et
Brewers signed LHP Scott Schoeneweis to a minor league contract.
He'll also receive an invite to Spring Training. Schoeneweis, 36, posted a 7.13 ERA in 24 innings with the Diamondbacks last season, but it was pretty much meaningless considering the tragic circumstances surrounding his wife's death. He's someone to root for this spring. Schoeneweis would earn $800,000 if he makes the team's roster.
 Corey Hart - OFFeb. 9 - 10:58 am et
The Brewers and Corey Hart will engage in an arbitration hearing on Thursday to decide the outfielder's salary for 2010.
The Brewers filed at $4.15 million and Hart requested $4.8 million when arbitration figures were exchanged back in mid-January. The two sides have been unable to reach a compromise and that's not likely to change in the next two days. "We've had enough time to get a deal done," said general manager Doug Melvin. "Right now, it looks like we've got the first case (to be heard)."

 Tim Dillard - RFeb. 5 - 2:25 pm et
RHP Tim Dillard has cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Nashville.
Dillard compiled a respectable 4.51 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 24 starts at the Triple-A level last season but was hammered in his two big league relief appearances. He was designated for assignment a few days ago to clear room on the 40-man roster for Marco Estrada.
 Tim Dillard - RFeb. 3 - 1:43 pm et
Brewers designated RHP Tim Dillard for assignment.
He was cleared in order to make room for right-hander Marco Estrada on the 40-man roster. Dillard, 26, spent the majority of the '09 season with Triple-A Nashville, compiling a 4.51 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 24 starts, but was torched in two relief appearances with the big club, allowing six runs in 4 1/3 innings.
 Marco Estrada - RFeb. 3 - 1:38 pm et
Brewers claimed RHP Marco Estrada off waivers from the Nationals.
He was designated for assignment after the Nationals signed Tyler Walker last week. Estrada, 26, tallied a 6.14 ERA in four appearances (one start) as a September call-up with Washington last season, but was impressive with Triple-A Syracuse, finishing 9-5 with a 3.63 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 27 games (22 starts). It's not a surprise to see another team take a chance on someone who has proven that they can throw strikes with regularity.
 Chris Smith - RFeb. 3 - 10:15 am et
Chris Smith has accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Nashville.
Smith will enter spring training as a non-roster invitee and will have to fight his way back to the big leagues with strong performances at the minor league ranks. The 28-year-old right-hander posted a 4.11 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 35 relief appearances with Milwaukee last season.
 Chris Smith - RFeb. 1 - 7:16 pm et
Brewers sent RHP Chris Smith outright to Triple-A Nashville.
Smith was designated for assignment last week but found little interest on the open market. The 28-year-old right-hander posted a 4.11 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 35 relief appearances with the Brewers last year and will have to battle for a job from the minor league ranks this season.
 David Riske - RJan. 31 - 4:30 pm et
David Riske, who underwent Tommy John surgery in June, said Sunday that there's a chance he could be ready by Opening Day.
"It's a long shot," said the right-hander, "but it's a possibility." Riske threw just one inning in 2009 and had an ugly 5.32 ERA in 42-plus frames in 2008. But he told MLB.com's Adam McCalvy Sunday that his elbow discomfort stretched back to 2007, when then-pitching coach Mike Maddux tried to team him a breaking ball. Hopefully a freshly constructed elbow will net better results.

 Prince Fielder - 1BJan. 31 - 2:17 pm et
The Brewers have engaged Prince Fielder's agent, Scott Boras, in some casual conversations about a long-term extension this offseason.
Fielder has another two years under team control, though, and it doesn't sound like either side is in a hurry to get a deal done. "I came up here and I love it here," the slugger said Saturday. "My thing is I want to stay here as long as possible. For now, I'm here for two more years anyway. All that other stuff, hopefully, will work out. ... There's no urgency right now as far as that."

 Corey Hart - OFJan. 31 - 1:12 pm et
Brewers outfielder Corey Hart lost 22 pounds this winter.
Hart has never had a problem with weight management, but getting in excellent shape certainly isn't going to hurt his performance. The 27-year-old hit .260/.335/.418 with 12 home runs in 472 at-bats last season. He said he lost the weight with an "insanity" workout plan.

 Corey Hart - OFJan. 31 - 11:30 am et
The Brewers have pulled their latest offer to Corey Hart off the table and will proceed to arbitration, says Tom Haudricourt of the Journal Sentinel.
"[The offer was] significantly higher than the number we filed. They didn't like it," said team negotiator Teddy Werner. The Brewers filed at $4.15 million while Hart requested $4.8 million, so it's curious the team couldn't come to an understanding. Werner went on to say they aren't ruling anything out but any agreement would have to come at a lower number, so it looks like GM Doug Melvin is headed for his first arbitration case as a Brewer.

 Felipe Lopez - 2BJan. 29 - 7:29 pm et
The Cardinals and Rockies are among teams 'in the mix' for free agent second baseman Felipe Lopez.
We haven't heard a whole lot about Lopez this winter, despite him coming off one of the better seasons among the entire class of free agents. Lopez, who turns 30 in May, batted .310/.383/.427 with nine home runs, 57 RBI and 88 runs scored between the Diamondbacks and Brewers last season. With experience at second base, shortstop, third base and the outfield, he'd be a great fit on any number of teams.

 Corey Hart - OFJan. 29 - 5:23 pm et
The Brewers are likely headed to an arbitration hearing with Corey Hart.
The club set a "soft deadline" for Friday evening and the two sides have not closed in on an agreement. Hart requested $4.8 million and was offered $4.15 million when arbitration figures were exchanged last Tuesday. The 27-year-old hit .260/.335/.418 with 12 home runs in 472 at-bats last year.

 Jim Edmonds - OFJan. 29 - 10:15 am et
Jim Edmonds told KSLG 1380 in St. Louis on Friday that the Brewers have told him he will "get a chance to play every day" against right-handers.
Edmonds initially expressed interest in returning to baseball with the Cardinals, but they didn't have enough at-bats available to him. The 39-year-old batted .250/.362/.521 with 19 home runs and 54 RBI in 292 at-bats against righties back in 2008, so he might have a decent amount of impact if used correctly. Still, he'll carry little fantasy value in most formats.

 Braden Looper - SJan. 28 - 8:55 pm et
The Mets are "looking at" 35-year-old free agent right-hander Braden Looper, according to Jayson Stark of ESPN.com.
Let's hope they view him as a last resort. Looper compiled a 14-7 record last season, but he did it with a 5.22 ERA, a 1.49 WHIP and just 100 strikeouts in 194-plus innings. He is not a difference maker and has drawn very little interest this winter. The Mets would be better of with John Smoltz or even Chien-Ming Wang, two guys they are also reportedly targeting.

 Marco Estrada - RJan. 28 - 5:55 pm et
Nationals designated RHP Marco Estrada for assignment.
He was cleared in order to make room for the newly-signed Tyler Walker. Estrada, 26, was a September call-up with the Nats this past season, posting a 6.14 ERA in four appearances (one start). He was 9-5 with a 3.63 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 27 games (22 starts) with Triple-A Syracuse.
 Jim Edmonds - OFJan. 28 - 3:03 pm et
Brewers signed OF Jim Edmonds to a minor league contract.
Edmonds, who turns 40 in June, must be added to the major league roster by March 25 or he will be granted his release. He'll make $850,000 if he makes the roster, with a chance to make between $2-2.5 million with performance incentives. Edmonds hasn't appeared in the majors since 2008, but still proved pretty valuable, slugging 19 homers with a 937 OPS in 250 at-bats with the Cubs. One of the more underrated players in recent memory, Edmonds is just 18 home runs away from 400. It's a very nice low-risk acquisition.
 Jim Edmonds - OFJan. 28 - 2:38 pm et
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Brewers are on the verge of signing free agent outfielder Jim Edmonds to a minor league contract.
It was hard to tell if Edmonds was half-kidding when he mentioned the prospect of a comeback earlier this month, but teams quickly jumped at the chance. Edmonds turns 40 in June, and didn't play in the majors last season, however he is just two years removed from putting up a 937 OPS and 19 homers with the Cubs in 2008. It's worth taking a flier on him if he can still punish right-handed pitching.

 Chris Smith - RJan. 27 - 3:34 pm et
Brewers designated RHP Chris Smith for assignment.
Smith was cleared in order to make room for Joe Inglett on the 40-man roster. The 28-year-old right-hander posted a 4.11 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 35 relief appearances with the Brewers last season. Most troubling, he allowed 11 home runs in just 46 innings, while his batting average on balls in play suggests that he probably got a bit lucky.
 Joe Inglett - OFJan. 27 - 3:29 pm et
Brewers claimed IF-OF Joe Inglett off waivers from the Rangers.
Inglett continues to bounce around the majors. He was designated for assignment by the Rangers on Monday after being claimed off waivers from the Blue Jays in December. The 31-year-old utility man batted .281/.347/.348 in 99 plate appearances last season, but spent most of the season with Triple-A Las Vegas. He should get a chance to compete for a spot on Milwaukee's Opening Day roster.
