 John Halama - RNov. 20 - 1:39 pm et
According to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy, left-hander John Halama hopes to sign a minor league contract with the Brewers next week.
The Brew Crew will have a scout in the stands Friday night when Halama takes the mound in the Dominican Republic. Assuming all goes well, Milwaukee will give the 37-year-old lefty a shot. He hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2006, but posted a 4.48 ERA in 16 appearances (13 starts) this season at Triple-A Gwinnett. The Brewers really are desperate for arms.

 Prince Fielder - 1BNov. 20 - 10:24 am et
According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, the Brewers plan to approach Prince Fielder with a long-term extension this offseason.
Fielder finished second in the majors with 46 homers in 2009 and tied Albert Pujols with 141 RBI. He tallied an impressive .299/.412/.602 batting line. The Brewers need to find solutions for the wretched starting rotation this winter, but locking up a hitter like Fielder can only be described as wise. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Tom Haudricourt doesn't expect talks to truly get going until January.

 Mark Mulder - RNov. 18 - 4:43 pm et
According to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, it would be a "huge upset" if Mark Mulder doesn't attempt his comeback with the Brewers.
The stars seem to be aligned considering Mulder's relationship with new pitching coach Rick Peterson. The 32-year-old southpaw missed the entire 2009 season rehabbing from shoulder surgery. Mulder hasn't pitched a full season in the major leagues since 2005, but he would be a low-cost gamble for the Brewers, who plan to upgrade their starting pitching this winter.

 George Kottaras - CNov. 18 - 3:49 pm et
Brewers claimed catcher George Kottaras off waivers from Red Sox.
Kottaras, 26, batted .237/.308/.387 with one homer and 10 RBI in 45 games with the Red Sox last season, while mostly serving as Tim Wakefield's personal catcher. The move gives the Brewers some extra catching depth as they contemplate bringing prospect Jonathan Lucroy to the majors.
 Lorenzo Cain - OFNov. 18 - 2:35 pm et
Brewers purchased the contracts of OF Lorenzo Cain and RHP Amaury Rivas.
The moves protect Cain and Rivas from December's Rule 5 draft. Cain, 23, was limited to just 60 games in 2009 due a left knee injury, batting .218/.294/.330 between three levels in the Milwaukee organization, but he showed real promise in 2009. Rivas, who turns 24 in December, was 13-7 with a 2.98 ERA at Class A Brevard County in 2009, earning the organization's pitcher of the year award.
 George Kottaras - CNov. 18 - 10:42 am et
Red Sox released catcher George Kottaras.
Kottaras, 26, hit .237/.308/.387 this season in 93 major league at-bats. He's no longer needed in Boston now that the club has Victor Martinez and Jason Varitek locked up through 2010.
 Eric Gagne - RNov. 17 - 4:55 pm et
The Brewers are unlikely to bring back Eric Gagne, reports Adam McCalvy of MLB.com.
Gagne, who turns 34 in January, told reporters at a charity event last week that he would like to make one more bid for the majors as a starting pitcher, but he should cross at least one of his former teams off his list. "I don't see that," Brewers assistant GM Gord Ash wrote in an e-mail. Gagne hasn't pitched in the majors since 2008 with Milwaukee, but he posted a 4.65 ERA in 17 starts as a player-coach with the Quebec Capitales of the independent Can-Am League. He has expressed a willingness to open the season in the minor leagues.

 Mat Gamel - 3BNov. 17 - 1:18 pm et
FOXSports.com reports that the despite the Brewers' logjam in the infield, they are unlikely to make a trade unless they are offered the pitching equivalent of Mat Gamel.
According to the report, Gamel garners more interest than Casey McGehee and Rickie Weeks with rival clubs, but as a left-handed hitter, he would help balance the Milwaukee's righty-heavy lineup. Gamel, 24, batted .242/.338/.422 with five home runs and 20 RBI in 128 at-bats for the Brewers last season. Even though he is a highly-regarded hitter, his defense is still playing catch up. Though general manager Doug Melvin would include him in the right deal, he is more likely to address the starting rotation via the free agent market.

 Craig Counsell - 2BNov. 16 - 12:02 pm et
Craig Counsell has attracted interest from 12 teams, reports Buster Olney of ESPN.com.
Olney thinks it is possible he will leave Milwaukee for a multi-year deal. Counsell, who turns 40 next August, batted .285/.357/.408 with four homers, 31 RBI and 61 runs scored in 2009 while shouldering his biggest workload since the 2005 season. Olney writes that he could be a possible fit with the Yankees or Red Sox.

 Ryan Doumit - CNov. 14 - 2:20 pm et
According to FOXSports.com, the Brewers didn't want Ryan Doumit in exchange for J.J. Hardy.
They weren't interested in Matt Capps, either. Instead, the Brewers asked for one of two left-handed starters, Zach Duke or Paul Maholm. The Pirates declined, so the the Brewers went on to trade Hardy to the Twins in exchange for 23-year-old center fielder Carlos Gomez. It's clear that the Pirates are willing to swap Doumit in the right package. The 28-year-old catcher is set to earn $3.55 million in 2010 and $5.1 million in 2011, with club options for two additional seasons.

 Eric Gagne - RNov. 13 - 8:11 pm et
Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports! writes that Eric Gagne hopes to return to the major leagues as a starting pitcher.
It seems far-fetched, but the 33-year-old was a starting pitcher with with the Quebec Capitales of the independent Can-Am League this season, posting a 4.65 ERA in 17 starts. Though the league is effectively baseball Siberia, Gagne added a cutter to his arsenal, a pitch he believes can be an effective weapon against left-handers. The road back to the majors won't be easy, as he would likely have to prove himself on the minor league level first.

 Ben Sheets - SNov. 13 - 3:07 pm et
Ben Sheets' agent, Casey Close, said Friday afternoon that his client fully intends to pitch in the upcoming season.
Brewers GM Doug Melvin caused a stir at the GM meetings this week when he noted that "no one's heard from Ben" this winter. Sheets' agent attempted to debunk that sort of talk with an e-mail to ESPN.com on Friday: "We have already heard from a number of teams inquiring about Ben's health and availability for 2010," Close said. "I will tell you that he has a very good chance to be one of the most impactful free agents, without question."

 Braden Looper - SNov. 13 - 1:04 pm et
According to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, the Brewers have declined RHP Braden Looper's $6.5 million option for 2010.
Looper posted a career-high 14 wins in 2009, but a quick glance under the surface reveals some troubling stats. His 5.22 ERA was a career-worst and he struck out just 100 batters in 194 2/3 innings of work. The right-hander was given a $1 million buyout to take his services elsewhere.

 Braden Looper - SNov. 13 - 9:10 am et
The Brewers have until Saturday to make a decision on Braden Looper's $6.5 million mutual option for 2010.
The Brewers can either exercise the option or hand him a $1 million buyout. Looper, 35, earned a career-high 14 wins in 2009, but posted a 5.22 ERA in 194 2/3 innings. He also led the majors in home runs allowed.

 John Lackey - SNov. 12 - 11:42 am et
Brewers general manager Doug Melvin met with John Lackey's agent Steve Hilliard in Chicago this week, reports Adam McCalvy of MLB.com.
McCalvy notes that the meeting was one in a series of sit-downs with the representatives of some of the top arms on the market, including the agents for Randy Wolf, Doug Davis and Mark Mulder. Melvin has rightfully downplayed the team's chances of landing Lackey, but he is in the process of shedding payroll in an effort to add two starting pitchers this offseason.

 Jason Kendall - CNov. 11 - 5:02 pm et
Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that the Brewers don't intend to bring back Jason Kendall unless he takes a pay cut.
Brewers general manager Doug Melvin told Kendall's agent Arn Tellem that he doesn't want to spend $5 million on a starting catcher, as he did last season. "We explained our situation to him, what we're trying to do," said Melvin. "He said he'll talk to Jason about it." Prospect Jonathan Lucroy could emerge as at least a part-time starter next season if the 35-year-old Kendall leaves via free agency.

 Ben Sheets - SNov. 11 - 2:01 pm et
Jeff Fletcher of AOL Fanhouse suggests that Ben Sheets may not try a comeback.
"No one's heard from Ben," said Brewers general manager Doug Melvin. Only weeks ago a member of Sheets' camp said that the 31-year-old right-hander had begun throwing off flat ground and would be ready to go when the season begins, so it's hard to know what to believe at this time. Expect to hear Sheets' name again before long.

 Jonathan Lucroy - CNov. 10 - 7:02 pm et
Brewers GM Doug Melvin said Tuesday that he's "starting to feel comfortable" with the idea of moving Jonathan Lucroy to the major leagues next season.
Lucroy hit .267 with nine home runs and 66 RBI in 125 games for Double-A Huntsville this season and has posted a .378/.385/.595 batting line in the Arizona Fall League. "I know it’s a big jump from Double-A to the big leagues but a lot of catchers have done it," said Melvin. "Russell Martin did it with the Dodgers, Chris Snyder in Arizona." Jason Kendall is a free agent this winter and the Brewers are looking to fill some holes on the cheap.

 Matt Capps - RNov. 10 - 1:00 pm et
Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette cites "an American League source" that says the Pirates offered Matt Capps to the Brewers in exchange for J.J. Hardy.
With Trevor Hoffman already signed for next season and Mike Cameron about to walk in free agency, the Brewers opted for the Twins offer of Carlos Gomez. Capps struggled in 2009, posting a 5.80 ERA and 1.66 WHIP in 57 appearances, but general manager Neal Huntington has indicated that he plans to tender Capps a contract for 2010.

 John Lackey - SNov. 10 - 12:47 pm et
FOXSports.com reports that the Brewers are unlikely to sign John Lackey.
Though Buster Olney of ESPN.com floated the Brewers as a potential suitor on Monday, this isn't a huge surprise. Upgrading their starting pitching is priority No. 1 for general manager Doug Melvin this offseason, but Lackey will likely be too rich for their tastes, as club officials believe he would prefer to go to a larger media market. Instead, look for the Brewers be in the mix for mid-rotation starters like Doug Davis and Jarrod Washburn.
