 Milton Bradley - OFNov. 20 - 12:37 pm et
According to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com, a reported three-team deal involving the Cubs, Mets, Rangers and Milton Bradley will not happen.
Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune reported Friday morning that a deal which would send Kevin Millwood to the Mets, Luis Castillo to the Cubs, and Bradley to Texas was in the works. Sullivan spoke to a "high-ranking" Rangers official Friday afternoon, who said bluntly: "Not happening." The Rangers have Millwood tabbed as their No. 1 starter heading into the 2010 season.

 Milton Bradley - OFNov. 20 - 11:15 am et
According to Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs, Mets and Rangers have discussed a deal that would land Milton Bradley in Texas.
The Mets would send Luis Castillo to the Cubs, Kevin Millwood would head to New York, and cash would be paid to the Rangers to cover some of the two years, $21 million remaining on Bradley's contract. We've heard similar rumors before and the amount of moving parts make it difficult to take too seriously. That said, it does make some sense. Stay tuned.

 Luis Castillo - 2BNov. 20 - 10:56 am et
Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News believes the Mets "may be overestimating the interest" in second baseman Luis Castillo.
Castillo batted .302/.387/.346 in 2009, but he's now 34 years of age and has two years, $12 million left on his current contract. With Orlando Hudson and Mark DeRosa on the free agent market, and Dan Uggla reportedly available via trade, the market for Castillo could be pretty thin.

 Jason Marquis - SNov. 18 - 9:27 am et
Free agent right-hander Jason Marquis told the New York Post Tuesday that he's a "perfect fit" for the Mets.
"There's definitely interest there," Marquis said of the Mets. "We'll see what direction they want to go." The 31-year-old went 11-6 with a 3.65 ERA during the first half of the season but 4-7 with a 4.56 ERA after the break. He signed a three-year, $21 million deal the last time he hit the free agent market and is thought to be looking for a similar contract this winter.

 Joel Pineiro - SNov. 17 - 9:29 am et
Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News confirms that the Mets are intrigued by free agent right-hander Joel Pineiro.
SI.com's Jon Heyman first suggested the connection last week but noted that Pineiro's current asking price (thought to be around three years, $30 million) might be a bit high for the Mets. The 31-year-old Type B free agent went 15-12 this season with a 3.49 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and MLB-leading 60.2 GB% in 32 starts. His 1.14 BB/9 was a four-year low in Major League Baseball.

 Matt Holliday - OFNov. 17 - 8:49 am et
Angels general manager Tony Reagins said Monday that he's not currently pursuing free agent outfielder Matt Holliday.
"He's a talented player," Reagins said of the 29-year-old Holliday. "But our focus is not on him right now." The Angels are hoping to attract John Lackey and Chone Figgins back to Anaheim and will attempt to re-sign both before trying for a big-money free agent bat. As of this moment, Holliday's openly interested suitors are the Red Sox, Mets and Cardinals.

 Edgardo Alfonzo - 3BNov. 14 - 12:37 pm et
Edgardo Alfonzo is hoping to receive an invite to spring training from some team this winter, hopefully the Mets.
Since Alfonzo last appeared in a major league uniform back in 2006 and has been playing in Long Island, Mexico, Venezuela and Japan since. He won the Japanese championship with the Yomiuri Giants last season but hit just .146/.293/.217 in 41 at-bats. A non-roster invite to the Mets' spring training would be a nice feel-good story, but anything more than that and the story then just becomes another example of Met futility.

 John Lackey - SNov. 14 - 12:14 pm et
David Lennon of Newsday expects the Mets to be serious bidders for free agent pitcher John Lackey.
Lennon reports that general manager Omar Minaya was impressed with Lackey in their preliminary meetings. Lackey is expected to seek a $100 million deal, which may be too rich for the Mets. However, if any team needs Lackey, it's the Mets.

 Carlos Delgado - 1BNov. 13 - 7:43 pm et
Mets general manager Omar Minaya plans to travel to Puerto Rico in December to watch Carlos Delgado participate in winter ball.
Minaya hasn't dismissed re-signing Delgado to play first base next season. Limited to just 26 games in 2009 due to an oblique injury and hip surgery, he hit .298/.393/.521 with four home runs and 23 RBI. The 37-year-old could be a cheap source of power, but he'll have to show he's healthy first.

 Jeff Francoeur - OFNov. 13 - 3:03 pm et
According to Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post, Mets GM Omar Minaya said Friday that he "wouldn't rule out" a contract extension for Jeff Francoeur.
Francoeur, who turns 26 this winter, was impressive during his time in New York this past season, batting .311/.338/.498 with 10 home runs, 20 doubles and 41 RBI in 289 at-bats. He's under team control until the 2012, but the Mets would like to lock him up through his arbitration years.

 John Lackey - SNov. 13 - 11:39 am et
According to Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald, the Red Sox met with John Lackey's agent at the GM meetings this week.
Silverman's source says the Red Sox have expressed "preliminary" interest in the free agent right-hander. Boston will have to tangle with baseball's biggest spenders for his services, but there's no doubt they have enough to lure him in. Lackey, 31, went 11-8 this season with a 3.83 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 139 strikeouts. He's also drawing interest from the Mets and Yankees.

 John Lackey - SNov. 13 - 10:32 am et
According to David Lennon of Newsday, the Mets are testing the waters on free agent right-hander John Lackey.
Mets GM Omar Minaya has already spoken over the phone with Lackey's agent, Steve Hilliard, and Lennon expects "plenty more conversation to come." The 31-year-old right-hander went 11-8 this season with a 3.83 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 139 strikeouts in 176 1/3 innings. He's drawing interest from most of baseball's biggest spenders, including the crosstown Yankees. The Angels are also expected to extend him an offer.

 Luis Castillo - 2BNov. 12 - 2:31 pm et
According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, general manager Omar Minaya has spoken with the Dodgers about Luis Castillo.
Minaya said that a few teams have shown interest in Castillo, which would have been unthinkable last winter. The Mets are in a better place this fall after Castillo batted .302/.387/.346 in 2009. The 34-year-old second baseman still has two years and $12 million left on his contract. Juan Pierre, who is slated to make $18.5 million over the next two seasons, would be a comparable swap.

 Carlos Delgado - 1BNov. 11 - 4:41 pm et
Carlos Beltran would like to see Carlos Delgado return to the Mets next season.
"Honestly, I would love to (have Mets bring him back)," said Beltran. "At the same time, that depends on the team, what kind of direction they're going to take, what kind of player they're planning to play at first base. But Delgado's a guy, if he's healthy, you're going to get a lot of contribution - 30 home runs, 100 RBI. You're going to get that from Delgado...it's safe to invest the money because he (takes) care of himself." Limited to just 26 games in 2009 due to hip surgery, the 37-year-old first baseman hit .298/.393/.521 with four home runs and 23 RBI. He plans to play winter ball in Puerto Rico to round himself back into shape.

 Chone Figgins - 3BNov. 11 - 12:22 pm et
According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, both the Mets and Phillies have shown interest in free agent Chone Figgins.
The Angels are also making attempts to re-sign him. Figgins, who turns 32 this winter, hit .298/.395/.393 during the regular season with five homers, 54 RBI, 42 stolen bases and 114 runs scored in 615 at-bats. He played mainly at third base for the Halos but has also been used in the outfield.

 Matt Holliday - OFNov. 11 - 8:40 am et
According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets have begun discussions with free agent outfielder Matt Holliday.
Mets GM Omar Minaya met with Holliday's agent, Scott Boras, for about 45 minutes Tuesday night. The club might not have enough money in the end to land the highly coveted outfielder, but they're going to try. "We need a left fielder and two of the best are in the [free-agent] market," one Mets executive said. "We are not doing our jobs if we don’t look into it."

 Joel Pineiro - SNov. 10 - 8:15 pm et
SI.com's Jon Heyman reports the Mets have interest in free agent Joel Pineiro but aren't thrilled with his current price tag.
Pineiro, a Type B free agent, went 15-12 this season with a 3.49 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and MLB-leading 60.2 GB% in 32 starts this season. Heyman expects his price tag to be in the neighborhood of three-years, $30 million.

 Jason Varitek - CNov. 10 - 5:04 pm et
Updating a previous item, Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes that the Mets have no interest in Jason Varitek.
Well that takes care of that. Upon speculating that New York could have interest in Varitek if he declines his player option with the Red Sox, two Mets officials spoke with Sherman, insisting that they want a catcher who can play in at least 100 games. The Mets don't believe the 37-year-old Varitek could hold up to the grind of a full schedule.

 Jason Varitek - CNov. 10 - 2:36 pm et
Joel Sherman of the New York Post suggests that the Mets could have interest in Jason Varitek.
Varitek will almost surely exercise his $3 million player option with the Red Sox, but if he doesn't feel like playing expensive backup to Victor Martinez, he may choose to gamble and test the market. Varitek has been connected to the Mets as recently as last offseason. Sherman writes that the 37-year-old backstop would provide veteran leadership and some pop behind the plate that the Mets sorely need.

 J.J. Putz - RNov. 10 - 1:57 pm et
According to FOXSports.com, J.J. Putz would be willing to accept a set-up role.
"He has a preference to be a closer, but absolutely will not rule out an eighth-inning job depending upon many factors," his agent Craig Landis said. "Money obviously will be one. Location, how good the team is, the coaching staff. If everything else stacked up and it happened to be a setup job, we'd consider it." He may have no choice. The 32-year-old right-hander put up a disappointing 5.22 ERA and 1.64 WHIP in 2009 and is working his way back from elbow surgery. As expected, the Mets declined his $9.1 million option last week.
