 Hisanori Takahashi - SFeb. 8 - 8:44 am et
Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker cites a Sanspo.com report that the Pirates have emerged as a possible suitor for Japanese left-hander Hisanori Takahashi.
Takahashi has been rumored to prefer the west coast, but signing with Pittsburgh could be consistent with his desire to land a major league contract and be a starting pitcher. The presence of Akinori Iwamura may also be a draw. Takahashi, who turns 35 in April, had a 3.70 ERA over 10 seasons with the Yomiuri Giants.

 Doug Bernier - 2BFeb. 5 - 6:43 pm et
Pirates signed IF Doug Bernier to a minor league contract.
He'll also be invited to Spring Training. Bernier, 29, spent all of last season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in the Yankees organization, batting just .181/.305/.238 with no homers and 20 RBI in 227 at-bats. He knows how to take a pitch, but really suffered after leaving the Colorado organization, giving credence to the notion that he was a product of his environment.
 Ryan Doumit - CFeb. 4 - 10:38 am et
Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com hears that there isn't much going on in the trade market for Ryan Doumit.
The Pirates flirted with the idea of trading Doumit during the winter, but he could be a name to watch as the season moves along. Doumit, 28, is under contract through at least 2011, with club options for 2012 and 2013. The Pirates selected Tony Sanchez in the first-round last June, so there's a pretty good chance Doumit won't be long for Pittsburgh.

 Donald Veal - SFeb. 3 - 9:45 pm et
Donnie Veal will be groomed as a starter for Triple-A Indianapolis, reports MLB.com's Jennifer Langosch.
Veal was a Rule 5 draft pick from the Cubs last year and spent most of the year on the active roster despite pitching just 16 1/3 innings. He had a stint on the disabled list with a sprained left finger. The left-hander might see some time in the majors this year, but the club will be eyeing a potential rotation spot in 2011 for the 25-year-old.

 Andrew McCutchen - OFJan. 30 - 1:32 pm et
Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Mario Lemieux and Penguins co-owner Ron Burkle recently made an unsolicited offer to buy the Pirates from Bob Nutting.
They never heard a response, but when asked about the offer by Kovacevic, Nutting made it pretty clear that he is not selling the team. "Honestly, I'm not sure there's a situation to describe," said Nutting. "I like Ron. He's an extremely competent businessman and deal-maker, and we've talked about a wide range of topics. But I think the simplest way to say this is that there never has been a substantive or formal offer for the team. The team is not for sale." There's probably not much to it, but anytime Lemieux is mentioned, Pittsburgh will listen.

 Anthony Claggett - RJan. 27 - 3:11 pm et
Pirates outrighted RHP Anthony Claggett to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Claggett will come to Spring Training as a non-roster invitee after clearing waivers. The 26-year-old was claimed off waivers from the Yankees last September. Claggett spent most of the '09 season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, tallying a 3.07 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 39 games (five starts).
 Steven Jackson - RJan. 27 - 3:07 pm et
Pirates outrighted RHP Steven Jackson to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Jackson successfully cleared waivers after being designated for assignment by the club last week. He'll be a non-roster invitee to Spring Training. The 27-year-old posted a 3.14 ERA in 40 relief appearances last season, masking an ugly 21/22 K/BB ratio.
 Brad Lincoln - SJan. 25 - 9:45 am et
Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that prospect right-hander Brad Lincoln hopes to make the club out of spring training.
"I'm going to go in thinking I want to make the team out of the spring," Lincoln said. "I don't want to wait for a midseason call-up. I've put in hours every day, on the field and in the gym, and I'm doing that because I want to show them that's what I deserve." Lincoln, who turns 25 in May, was 7-7 with a 3.37 ERA and 107/28 K/BB ratio in 25 starts between Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis last season. Delaying the former first-round pick's service time is one reason to keep him in Triple-A until at least Memorial Day, and his 4.70 ERA at the Triple-A level suggests that's probably for the best.

 Andrew McCutchen - OFJan. 25 - 9:34 am et
Pirates owner Bob Nutting said he sees the team's payroll eventually rising to the level of the Reds and Brewers.
"I think that's expected. I think it's rational. I think it's where Pittsburgh needs to be," said Nutter. "And we're in that trajectory now. As you see our current core of players -- one I have faith in -- as they mature, the dollars are going to increase. If that needs to be supplemented, we need to have the flexibility to be able to do that." The team's Opening Day payroll will likely be in the $35 million range, down from $48 million last season, while the Brewers and Reds are each around $75 million.

 Octavio Dotel - RJan. 21 - 9:47 pm et
Octavio Dotel will make $3.25 million in base salary this season.
Dotel officially inked a contract with the Bucs on Thursday afternoon after passing a physical. The 36-year-old is expected to serve as the club's closer and can earn some extra cash this season if he finishes a pre-determined amount of games. He compiled a 3.55 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 11.6 K/9 in 134 appearances over the last two seasons with the White Sox.

 Octavio Dotel - RJan. 21 - 4:33 pm et
General manager Neal Huntington noted that he "doesn't forsee any other activity" after Thursday's addition of reliever Octavio Dotel.
"We'll continue to investigate and explore, but I do not anticipate much more activity from us," said Huntington. "We'll continue to talk to see if there are trades out there, small or medium-sized ... I wouldn't anticipate anything big. But, at this time, I don't foresee any other activity from us." The roster is pretty well set right now, but the next likely move will be flipping outfielder Brandon Jones -- who was picked up on waivers from the Braves earlier this week -- to another team.

 Octavio Dotel - RJan. 21 - 2:13 pm et
Pirates signed RHP Octavio Dotel to a one-year, $3.25 million contract with a $4.5 million club option for 2011.
Terms were not released, but Dotel is expected to make around $3 million in 2010. The 36-year-old right-hander immediately jumps Joel Hanrahan and Evan Meek to become the favorite for saves in Pittsburgh despite not being used as a full-time closer since the early part of the 2007 season. That said, Dotel hasn't showed any signs of slowing down, amassing a 3.55 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 11.6 K/9 in 134 appearances over the last two seasons with the White Sox.
 Anthony Claggett - RJan. 21 - 2:08 pm et
Pirates designated RHP Anthony Claggett for assignment.
The Pirates needed to clear some space on their 40-man roster to make room for Octavio Dotel. Claggett was claimed off waivers from the Yankees in September. The 26-year-old right-hander made three appearances in the majors last season, but spent most of his season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, posting a 3.07 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 39 games (five starts). While these numbers look serviceable, his strikeout rate collapsed to just 4.7 K/9 last season, more than two strikeouts below his career average.
 Octavio Dotel - RJan. 20 - 10:41 pm et
Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the Pirates have signed Octavio Dotel to a one year deal worth about $3 million along with a club option for 2011.
The 36 year old is the prohibitive favorite to close for the Pirates and should have a fair amount of value as a result. He spent the last two seasons as a setup man for the White Sox, posting respective ERAs of 3.76 and 3.32. Over said two years, his K/9 rate was a strong 10.83 and should have plenty of value in mixed leagues.

 Brandon Jones - OFJan. 20 - 11:03 am et
The Pirates are hoping to trade recently-claimed outfielder Brandon Jones, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The Bucs grabbed Jones earlier this week after he was designated for assignment by Atlanta. The 26-year-old was 4-for-13 in five games with the Braves last season and hit .281/.360/.419 with seven home runs and 57 RBI at Triple-A Gwinnett. He should draw a decent amount of interest.

 Octavio Dotel - RJan. 20 - 8:26 am et
The Pirates are expected to finalize a deal with Octavio Dotel this week.
The Bucs have experienced a few mix-ups with their 40-man roster and are getting those cleared up in order to make room for Dotel. The righty has compiled a 3.55 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 11.6 K/9 in 134 appearances over the last two seasons with the White Sox and would close in 2010 for the Pirates.

 Steven Jackson - RJan. 20 - 12:43 am et
Pirates designated RHP Steven Jackson for assignment.
Pittsburgh needed room on their 40-man roster with the recent acquisitions of outfielders Ryan Church and Brandon Jones. The 27-year-old Jackson had a 3.14 ERA through 40 appearances for the Pirates last season, making his designation somewhat surprising. He had a 21/22 K/BB ratio, however, and will have a hard time ever replicating 2009 again unless his control improves. Jackson's success last season might mean that he garners interest through the waiver process from a team with intentions of handing him a major league bullpen spot. The Pirates, meanwhile, hope he slips through the cracks and returns to Triple-A Indianapolis for the start of next season.
 Zach Duke - SJan. 19 - 9:09 pm et
The Pirates and LHP Zach Duke avoided arbitration Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $4.3 million contract.
The Pirates shopped Duke this winter but obviously didn't find a substantial return. The 26-year-old southpaw was 11-16 with a 4.06 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 2009 and even earned an All-Star nod.

 Brandon Jones - OFJan. 19 - 4:04 pm et
Pirates claimed OF Brandon Jones off waivers from the Braves.
Jones was designated for assignment by the Braves last week in order to make room for Eric Hinske. The 26-year-old outfielder was 4-for-13 in five games with Atlanta last season, but spent the majority of the year with Triple-A Gwinnett, batting .281/.360/.419 with seven home runs and 57 RBI.
