 Stephen Strasburg - SNov. 19 - 9:37 pm et
The Nationals have officially scratched Stephen Strasburg (knee) from his final scheduled start in the Arizona Fall League.
Strasburg was injured while shagging fly balls Thursday afternoon. He was then taken to a local hospital for X-rays, which revealed some inflammation in his left knee. The Nats released a statement terming it an issue that is "not considered serious," so he should be fine to continue his offseason regimen once the inflammation clears. He'll be good by the start of spring training.

 Stephen Strasburg - SNov. 19 - 8:42 pm et
According to Bill Ladson of MLB.com, Stephen Strasburg only has a "twisted" knee and it's not being considered a serious injury.
Strasburg felt a pop in his knee while shagging fly balls Thursday and was taken to a hospital for tests. He's likely to be scratched from his scheduled start Saturday but should be completely fine by spring training.

 Stephen Strasburg - SNov. 19 - 8:24 pm et
Stephen Strasburg injured his knee while shagging flies during batting practice Thursday and is expected to sit out the AFL Championship Saturday.
Strasburg felt a "pop" in his knee and was taken to a local hospital for an MRI. He went 4-1 with a 4.26 ERA in five starts during Arizona Fall League play and was scheduled to make his final start for the Desert Dogs Saturday.

 Aaron Thompson - SNov. 19 - 5:01 pm et
Nationals purchased the contracts of LHP Aaron Thompson, RHP Juan Jaime, and LHP Atahualpa Severino.
Thompson, 22, was acquired from the Marlins in the Nick Johnson trade. He was 5-12 with a 3.93 ERA between Double-A Jacksonville (Marlins) and Double-A Harrisburg (Nationals) in 2009. Jamie, 22, had a sterling 12.3 K/9 in 14 games (12 starts) between Class A Vermont and Hagerstown. Severino, 25, was 10-0 with a 2.62 ERA in 44 relief appearances between Class A Potomac and Double-A Harrisburg, earning 17 saves.
 John Lackey - SNov. 17 - 10:19 pm et
The Washington Nationals are expected to bid for John Lackey, says a source of MLB.com's Bill Ladson.
The Nationals would prefer to focus their available money towards a pitcher (not someone like Adam Everett, who they've been linked to) and are targeting Lackey in a mentorship role while being an ace. It's a nice idea, but we don't see Lackey settling for anything less than a bonafide winner.

 Jesus Flores - CNov. 17 - 7:08 pm et
Jesus Flores underwent arthroscopic surgery on his elbow in addition to the previous surgery to repair a torn right labrum.
Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said the elbow surgery will not make a difference in Flores' progress, and the 24-year-old is expected to be ready for spring training. The Nationals have been thought to be seeking a backup catcher they are comfortable with starting (unlike Josh Bard and Wil Nieves), which makes one wonder how confident they are in Flores' recovery.

 Billy Wagner - RNov. 16 - 8:38 pm et
According to FOXSports.com, free agent reliever Billy Wagner has already drawn interest from eight teams this offseason.
Wagner's agent, Bean Stringfellow, was kind enough to name five of the interested clubs: the Red Sox, Braves, Nationals, Astros, and Orioles. All make sense for the 38-year-old left-hander, who posted a 1.72 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 26/8 K/BB ratio in 15 2/3 innings during the 2009 season.

 Scott Olsen - SNov. 16 - 7:42 pm et
Scott Olsen said Monday that his surgically repaired shoulder is 100 percent.
Olsen underwent season-ending surgery to repair a torn left labrum in July. "When I do my throwing program in offseason, I've been told to go about it as if I wasn't even hurt," said the left-hander. "I will not do anything different." It's not clear if the Nationals plan to offer him arbitration this winter. He went just 2-4 with an ugly 1.72 WHIP and 6.03 ERA before hitting the 60-day disabled list in '09 and turns 26 years of age in January.

 Josh Willingham - OFNov. 14 - 3:45 pm et
FOXSports.com reports that the Nationals have been drawing strong trade interest for Josh Willingham.
The question is whether they would be willing to part with him. Willingham, 30, batted .260/.367/.496 with 24 homers and 61 RBI in 2009, and was coveted by several teams at the trade deadline. According to the report, the Braves have interest in Willingham, but also have concerns about his defense and past back troubles. Willingham earned $2.95 million last season and will likely see a raise to the $4-5 million range in his second year of arbitration. Under team control through 2011, Willingham might be the best trade chip the Nationals have.

 Mike Gonzalez - RNov. 13 - 7:16 pm et
Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports that the Nationals have interest in Mike Gonzalez and Mark DeRosa.
Gonzalez posted a 2.42 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 80 appearances as Atlanta's set-up man in 2009 and would certainly improve a bullpen that was the worst in the majors for the great majority of the season. He'd be a wiser end-game option than Mike MacDougal. As for the versatile DeRosa, Washington will have plenty of competition, as several teams have already inquired about the 34-year-old. Though he played mostly third base in 2009, Ladson notes that the Nationals have interest in him as a second baseman or left fielder.

 Cristian Guzman - SSNov. 12 - 8:19 pm et
Nationals manager Jim Riggleman said Thursday that Cristian Guzman will play second base for the club in 2010.
Guzman underwent surgery on his throwing shoulder in October. He's expected to be ready by the start of spring training, but the Nats believe he won't have the kind of range he once did. Ian Desmond, who hit .280/.380/.561 with four home runs and 12 RBI as a September call-up, could open the season as Washington's starting shortstop.

 Alex Gonzalez - SSNov. 12 - 5:47 pm et
FOXSports.com cites major league sources who say that the Nationals are interested in Adam Everett or Alex Gonzalez to play shortstop.
So much for Ian Desmond. According to the report, the Nationals plan to move Cristian Guzman to second base while giving Desmond more time at Triple-A. Everett and Gonzalez can certainly pick it at short, so they'd be a considerable improvement over Guzman. The Red Sox wisely declined Gonzalez's $6 million option for 2010, but haven't ruled out bringing him back.

 Ryan Zimmerman - 3BNov. 12 - 3:09 pm et
Nationals named Jim Riggleman as manager.
Terms were not disclosed, but the interim tag has officially been removed. Riggleman took the reins after Manny Acta was fired in July and led the Nationals to a 33-42 record. Even with a seven-game winning streak to finish the season, the Nationals finished with a major-league worst 59-103 record. Riggleman was the favorite for the job all along, but the team also considered Bobby Valentine, Bob Melvin and Tim Foli.

Jim Riggleman will be named manager of the Nationals, according to Fox Sports' Jim Bowden.
Riggleman beat out Bobby Valentine for the position. Riggleman led the Nationals to a 33-42 record in 2009 as an interim manager. He appeared to be the favorite of GM Mike Rizzo from the outset.

 Stephen Strasburg - SNov. 11 - 6:38 pm et
Stephen Strasburg (neck) will make his next start in the Arizona Fall League on Saturday, the Nationals announced.
Strasburg was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday in the Arizona Fall League's "Rising Stars Game" because of a strained muscle in his neck. The injury was never considered serious. The touted youngster is 3-1 with a 5.28 ERA in four starts, with a 17/5 K/BB rate in 15 1/3 innings.

 Ryan Zimmerman - 3BNov. 11 - 3:23 pm et
The National League Gold Glove winners were announced on Wednesday, with Ryan Zimmerman of the Nationals taking home his first award.
Shane Victorino, Michael Bourn and Matt Kemp make up the outfield, while Zimmerman, Jimmy Rollins, Orlando Hudson and Adrian Gonzalez comprise the infield. Kemp and Bourn were both recognized for the first time. Yadier Molina took home his second straight Gold Glove behind the plate while teammate Adam Wainwright became the first pitcher besides Greg Maddux to win the NL Gold Glove since Mike Hampton in 2003. While the American League choices didn't come without some second guessing, the senior circuit did quite well with these selections.

 Ryan Zimmerman - 3BNov. 10 - 7:59 pm et
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Jim Riggleman is the clear front-runner to be named manager of the Nationals.
Riggleman and Bobby Valentine are the only known finalists for the gig and an announcement is expected on the position by the end of the week. Riggleman led the Nationals to a 33-42 record in 2009 as an interim skipper. He's already drawn praise this offseason from GM Mike Rizzo.

 Livan Hernandez - SNov. 10 - 3:17 pm et
According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, the Diamondbacks have interest in signing Livan Hernandez.
Because seeing him get knocked around in Chase Field would be fun? Hernandez was 9-12 with a 5.44 ERA and 1.56 WHIP in 31 starts between the Mets and Nationals in 2009, but was a member of the Diamondbacks from 2006-07. Piecoro notes that Hernandez would be brought in more for his potential role in the clubhouse than his performance on the field. If signed, he would compete with Billy Buckner, Bryan Augenstein and Kevin Mulvey to lock down the back-end of the starting rotation.

 Ryan Zimmerman - 3BNov. 10 - 9:17 am et
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that Bobby Valentine is a finalist to manage the Nationals.
Interim manager Jim Riggleman, who led the Nationals to a 33-42 record, is the other finalist. Hiring Valentine would be quite the splash, although his salary demands would be considerably higher than Riggleman. According to general manager Mike Rizzo, the Nationals are expected to make a decision by the end of the week.

 Ryan Zimmerman - 3BNov. 9 - 6:53 pm et
The Nationals are expected to decide soon whether to remove the interim tag on manager Jim Riggleman.
"In talking to some people up in Washington," Riggleman said, "the feeling I'm getting is that there will be [something happening] between the General Managers' Meetings and the Winter Meetings." The Nationals are either keeping their managerial search under wraps or have not interviewed many candidates. Whatever the situation, Riggleman has been praised by the organization and seems likely to land the gig.
