 Donte' Stallworth - WRFeb. 9 - 6:20 pm et
Updating a previous item, Profootballtalk.com reports Donte' Stallworth will work out for the Lions Wednesday.
The Lions presumably see Stallworth as an upgrade on Bryant Johnson as the No. 2 receiver. His 17 receptions for 170 yards in 11 games with the Browns two years ago suggest that may no longer be the case.

 DeDe Dorsey - RBFeb. 9 - 3:11 pm et
Lions signed RB DeDe Dorsey.
The MVP of the UFL's inaugural championship game, Dorsey offers a similar package to change-of-pace back Aaron Brown. The Lions are expected to add a possible starter as well, so Dorsey may have to impress as a returner to nail down a roster spot behind Maurice Morris.

 Matthew Stafford - QBFeb. 9 - 9:36 am et
Matthew Stafford (shoulder, knee) is hoping to be cleared for full participation for the offseason conditioning program, which begins on March 15.
Stafford's shoulder did not require surgery and he's simply been rehabbing it to improve strength in the capsule. He's at the Lions facility this week to check in with team doctors and all signs point toward him being good to go in March.

 Matthew Stafford - QBFeb. 5 - 11:09 am et
Matthew Stafford indicated that he's "pretty close" to being recovered from the left shoulder injury that ended his season.
Stafford underwent a knee scope in late December, but it was the shoulder that kept him out of the lineup for the final month. He's expected to be healthy for offseason activities, but the Lions will need to upgrade the offensive line to keep him in one piece for 2010.

 Kevin Smith - RBFeb. 4 - 6:08 pm et
Kevin Smith is reportedly seeking outside opinions on his left shoulder and may not need surgery after all.
Smith actually played through injuries to both shoulders in 2009. He was delaying the procedure until he ditched his crutches from ACL surgery. Now he's hoping to repair the left shoulder through rehabilitation instead. Per beat writer Tom Kowalski, Smith is expected to land on the training camp PUP list even if his shoulder doesn't go under the knife.

 Matthew Stafford - QBFeb. 4 - 8:50 am et
Matthew Stafford (knee scope) reiterated that he expects to be ready for the start of the off-season conditioning program in March.
"It's still in the rehab phase, but I'm moving around, doing a lot of stuff with it," Stafford said. "It's more strength now than anything." The minor surgery won't adversely affect his draft status this summer.

 Larry Foote - LBFeb. 4 - 8:47 am et
Frustrated by a lack of progress with the Lions, MLB Larry Foote is determined to test free agency this offseason.
Foote, 29, gave the Lions a one-year discount last year because he wanted to return to his hometown. With DeAndre Levy ready to step in as a starter, however, the Lions are in no hurry to bring back Foote on a multi-year deal.

 Kevin Smith - RBJan. 28 - 4:07 pm et
Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said he expects Kevin Smith (ACL, shoulder surgeries) to be back for the start of next season.
Smith hasn't even undergone the shoulder surgery yet. The Lions originally speculated that Smith's knee involved more than just the ACL tear, but he underwent surgery less than two weeks after suffering the injury. The lack of a delay and Linehan's optimism suggest Smith wasn't as seriously injured as first feared. Regardless, we remain skeptical that Smith will be ready for a prominent role by Week 1.

 Maurice Morris - RBJan. 28 - 1:23 pm et
Lions GM Martin Mayhew is determined to add a running back this offseason, either through free agency or the draft.
Mayhew isn't sure what role the new back will play. The Lions won't take a back at No. 2 overall, so it depends who remains available in the second/third round or free agency. Kevin Smith is a longshot for Week 1, which leaves Maurice Morris as the tentative starter entering the offseason.

 Mike Iupati - GJan. 27 - 1:56 pm et
Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan says Idaho OG Mike Iupati is "obviously the best player" at the Senior Bowl.
"I've heard a lot of good things about him, and it's holding true," said Linehan, who is coaching Iupati's North squad. "You really notice him. He can do the double teams. He's powerful. You see him pull." The Lions have a gaping hole at left guard, though they'd likely need an additional first-round pick to get Iupati. He'll be gone by Detroit's second-round pick (No. 34).

 Kevin Smith - RBJan. 27 - 11:22 am et
Kevin Smith still hasn't undergone surgery to repair his separated left shoulder.
Smith is still in the early stages of his recovery from ACL surgery and is waiting to get off crutches before having the shoudler operated on. He's already been counted out for any and all offseason workouts.

 Gosder Cherilus - TJan. 23 - 6:53 pm et
Lions GM Martin Mayhew referred to 2010 as a "big year" for RT Gosder Cherilus, while calling for more consistency out of the former No. 17 overall draft pick.
Cherilus has the requisite physical attributes to be a successful right tackle, but he's been criticized for spotty footwork and technique in addition to mental errors. Two years into his career, Cherlilus looks like the last of the Matt Millen first-round busts.

 Ndamukong Suh - DLJan. 22 - 2:10 pm et
In a conference call with media Friday, NFL Network's Mike Mayock called Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy the best two players in the draft.
Mayock compared Suh to a better version of Kevin Williams. He also said there's "no way in the world, in my mind" that a quarterback could move into the top two draft picks. Suh was much more productive than McCoy in 2009 and is better against the run. Clearly, he is the favorite to go to St. Louis.

 Calvin Johnson - WRJan. 20 - 3:55 pm et
Lions beat reporter Tom Kowalski writes that, according to "everything I've heard," Calvin Johnson won't be traded this offseason.
The Lions could probably land an impressive haul for Johnson, but their offseason will be geared toward preparing Matthew Stafford to be the best quarterback he can be. Obviously, trading their hands-down best weapon would be detrimental to Stafford's progress. Calvin isn't going anywhere.

 Glenn Dorsey - DLJan. 20 - 3:51 pm et
Lions beat writer Tom Kowalski believes the team "might make a play" for Chiefs DL Glenn Dorsey this offseason.
Dorsey was drafted by K.C. when current Lions DC Gunther Cunningham ran the Chiefs' defense. Dorsey would also be a better fit in Detroit's 4-3 scheme as a three technique tackle. He hasn't been productive in the Chiefs' 3-4.

 DeDe Dorsey - RBJan. 17 - 11:51 am et
Free agent Dede Dorsey was among three running backs that worked out for the Eagles this week, according to Adam Caplan of Scout.com.
Power back Dwayne Wright was also part of the workout. It's just another sign that the Eagles are preparing for life after Brian Westbrook. LeSean McCoy is likely to enter 2010 as the feature back and Dorsey would provide an even speedier option on passing downs.

Sammie Lee Hill - DLJan. 15 - 1:39 pm et
Lions GM Martin Mayhew indicated that he saw 2009 fourth-round pick Sammie Lee Hill as a difference maker in his rookie season.
Mayhew admits Hill is a "middle-of-the-road defensive tackle at this point," but added "When he wasn't in there, you could see there was a difference and a drop-off in our run defense." Hill was very raw coming from Stillman College, so these are all positives. The 6'4/330-pounder has a big upside.

 DeAndre Levy - LBJan. 15 - 1:34 pm et
In addition to Louis Delmas and Matt Stafford, Lions GM Martin Mayhew named LB DeAndre Levy as one of the team's most impressive rookies.
"I think we had some very advanced rookies this year, in terms of Matthew Stafford, Louis Delmas, (and) DeAndre Levy," Mayhew said. Levy is the Lions' middle linebacker of the future and has the potential to be an every-down player because he can cover. He's a strong hold in IDP dynasty leagues.

 Aaron Brown - RBJan. 15 - 1:19 pm et
Lions beat writer Tom Kowalski suggests that Aaron Brown could move into a "hybrid" receiver/tailback as a second-year player.
Brown showed plenty of explosiveness on his limited touches as a rookie, averaging 4.9 yards per carry and 9.3 yards per catch despite getting the ball just 36 times. He may battle an incoming player for third-down back duties.

 Cliff Avril - DLJan. 15 - 10:35 am et
According to beat writer Tom Kowalski, the Lions' coaching staff was disappointed with DE Cliff Avril's performance in 2009.
Avril engendered high expectations with a strong training camp, but he didn't "step up and put a lock on the starting job." The Lions have so many holes, though, that Avril will likely get a chance to improve on his 5.5 sacks as a returning starter in 2010. He's easily the club's best pure pass rusher.
