 Julius Peppers - DLFeb. 9 - 9:04 am et
During a radio interview that aired Tuesday morning, Julius Peppers said he doesn't want a long-term extension from the Panthers.
Panthers beat writer Darin Gantt says "it's becoming more and more clear that Peppers isn't going to be here next year." Peppers is upset that the Panthers are giving him and his agent the "silent treatment." Gantt suggests that the Panthers should put the franchise tag on Peppers with designs on trading him. The Eagles, Patriots and Falcons are rumored as possible landing spots.

 Tom Brady - QBFeb. 8 - 6:04 pm et
Tom Brady's $3 million offseason roster bonus is due on March 5.
As ESPN's Mike Reiss notes, the presence of the bonus in Brady's deal at the start of the new league year could expedite talks on a long-term extension. The Pats would likely prefer to sign Brady to a new contract before paying the bonus rather than after it. Brady is expected to command at least $15M annually on his deal, which will probably span at least five years.

 Patriots Defense - TMFeb. 6 - 11:03 am et
The Patriots will not fill their vacant defensive coordinator role for 2010.
Instead, coach Bill Belechick will be more involved with the defense and share the workload with his assistants. The Pats parted ways with Dean Pees, who served as defensive coordinator over the past four season, in January. LBs coach Matt Patricia was believed to be the favorite for the open coordinator position but will instead share duties with the rest of the defensive staff.

 Fred Taylor - RBFeb. 5 - 1:53 pm et
Fred Taylor said Friday that he wants to return to the Patriots in 2010.
Taylor missed all but six games in 2009 due to ankle surgery. He was effective when healthy, but a $2 million salary makes his return uncertain. The Patriots may also pursue turnover in the offensive backfield. Taylor and Sammy Morris are getting over the hill, Laurence Maroney has been wildly inconsistent, and third-down back Kevin Faulk is headed for free agency.

 Adalius Thomas - LBFeb. 4 - 5:40 pm et
Adalius Thomas conceded Thursday that he's probably done with the Patriots.
Thomas revealed that "something happened" between him and coach Bill Belichick in Week 1, and he still doesn't understand it. Due close to $5 million in 2010, his Patriots days are over. Rex Ryan could be interested in trying his former star linebacker in green and white.

 Brandon Tate - WRFeb. 3 - 4:25 pm et
Patriots WR Brandon Tate said Tuesday that his surgically repaired right knee is "good."
Tate came off the PUP list in late October, only to be placed on injured reserve three weeks later -- ostensibly due to a setback. If finally healthy, he could fill the team's need for a dangerous returner and situational deep threat in 2010.

 Wes Welker - WRFeb. 2 - 7:00 pm et
Wes Welker underwent reconstructive surgery to repair the ACL in his left knee Tuesday, as expected.
Welker had to wait until the torn MCL was healed before he went under the knife. The surgery was 30 days from the original injury. Welker is aiming for a Week 1 return, which is highly optimistic. It's doubtful that he'll be close to 100 percent until mid-season.

 Ricky Foley - LBFeb. 2 - 5:42 pm et
British Columbia Lions LB Ricky Foley, CFL's sacks leader in 2009, is scheduled to visit the Patriots on Thursday.
Foley has already visited with the Jets and will also meet with the Rams. Foley's agent admits his client isn't as good as former BC Lions teammate Cameron Wake of the Dolphins, but he could end up on NFL roster as a special teamer.

 Ben Watson - TEFeb. 2 - 2:28 pm et
Impending free agent Ben Watson has switched agents to Rosenhaus Sports.
Indications out of Boston are that neither side is interested in re-signing, so Watson is preparing for the free agent market. Tony Scheffler is expected to be available via trade, but Watson is the best tight end on the open market.

 Randy Moss - WRFeb. 1 - 4:24 pm et
ESPN's Mike Reiss reports that Randy Moss played through a separated shoulder for most of the regular season.
The Boston Herald reports that Moss suffered the injury in Week 5. This may help explain why Moss was a non-factor in New England's playoff loss and sat out the Pro Bowl. Whether he needs surgery is uncertain, but the injury shouldn't sideline Moss for OTAs. Moss also had knee and back issues during the season. The 33-year-old's body may be beginning to let him down some.

 Vince Wilfork - DLFeb. 1 - 2:23 pm et
The Boston Globe considers it "virtually certain" that the Patriots will use the franchise tag on Vince Wilfork.
Wilfork, an unrestricted free agent, has not been in contact with the team recently about an extension. Though Wilfork has said publicly he'd like to play for a team near his home in Miami, the Pats won't let him get away.

 Jarvis Green - DLFeb. 1 - 10:55 am et
Patriots DE Jarvis Green, an impending unresticted free agent, plans on testing the market.
Green has been with New England for all eight of his NFL seasons. He became a starter last year when Richard Seymour was surprisingly traded but played a little over half the defensive snaps and had just one sack. He's not coming off his best season entering the open market and is 31. Mike Wright and Ron Brace are candidates to step into a starting role if Green walks.

 Logan Mankins - GJan. 31 - 11:29 am et
Pro Bowl LG Logan Mankins, who is set to become a restricted free agent, isn't concerned about his contract situation.
Mankins wants an extension, but appears to be resigned to his fate. As a RFA, the Patriots will hold all the cards on the excellent run blocker and can bring him back on a one-year deal worth around $3M. It's an unlucky break for Mankins, who would have been unrestricted and set for a big payday under normal circumstances.

 Wes Welker - WRJan. 30 - 11:43 am et
According to the Providence Journal, it's believed Wes Welker had planned to approach the Patriots about a potential pay raise prior to tearing his ACL and MCL in the team's regular season finale.
Welker has lost all leverage coming off reconstructive knee surgery. The NFL's annual receptions leader was severely underpaid prior to the injury, playing on a five-year, $18.1 million contract. He'll collect just over $2.2 million in 2010, but probably won't be ready to play until Week 6 or 7.

 Tully Banta-Cain - LBJan. 29 - 6:44 pm et
Contrary to earlier reports, Tully Banta-Cain did not sign a contract extension during the 2009 season.
The Pats cut Banta-Cain for procedural reasons in late October, only to re-sign him a day later. It was incorrectly reported at the time that an extension was involved. Now a free agent, the Pats' leading pass-rusher wants to re-sign in New England.

 Vince Wilfork - DLJan. 28 - 7:06 pm et
Free agent NT Vince Wilfork said Thursday that playing for either Miami or Tampa Bay would be a "dream come true."
Wilfork went to the University of Miami, so playing in Florida would be a homecoming. It's an unlikely scenario, however, as the Pats will slap him with the franchise tag if they can't come to an agreement on a long-term deal.

 Shawn Springs - DBJan. 27 - 8:17 pm et
Patriots CB Shawn Springs confirmed late Wednesday that he is not planning to retire after all.
"Nah, I don't think so. I still got a lot to play for," he said. "Even If I was I would not just announce it on TV like that. I would consult with some people first." While he may not be a starter in 2010, Springs' return is good news for the Patriots. He still matches up well with big wide receivers.

 Wes Welker - WRJan. 27 - 5:30 pm et
Wes Welker (torn ACL, MCL) is scheduled to have his knee reconstructed on Tuesday, February 2.
The swelling in Welker's knee has finally gone down enough for doctors to perform the procedure, but the four-week wait figures to cost him another month of next season. Doctors reportedly have not ruled Welker out for Week 1 of 2010, but the odds are stacked heavily against him being ready by then.

 Adalius Thomas - LBJan. 27 - 2:03 pm et
The Patriots have reportedly had no contact with OLB Adalius Thomas since the end of the season.
Thomas, due $4.9M in 2010, played just 54% of New England's defensive snaps last season. The Pats appear to be considering an overhaul at OLB. They've interviewed Eric Norwood and Brandon Graham at the Senior Bowl.

 Shawn Springs - DBJan. 27 - 1:18 pm et
Patriots CB Shawn Springs indicated Wednesday that he may consider calling it a career this offseason.
"I actually feel like I can still play a lot, so I don’t know yet," he said. "I’m taking my time. I think every player should." Springs, who turns 35 in March, added a late-season spark to New England's back end when he moved into the starting lineup at left corner. He finished with 39 tackles and a pick.
