 Kenny Phillips - DBFeb. 8 - 10:23 pm et
Giants SS Kenny Phillips says he is ahead of schedule in his recovery from September microfracture surgery.
Dr. James Andrews, Phillips' surgeon, and the Giants' club physician agree that Phillips' recovery has gone well so far. However, he's only just began running in a pool and hasn't been cleared to jog on land yet. He won't begin doing so until March 29, exactly six months after the operation. It's going to be hard for the Giants to count on Phillips as they approach the offseason.

 Brandon Jacobs - RBFeb. 5 - 2:27 pm et
Brandon Jacobs revealed Friday that he injured his knee in the Giants' 2009 opener and played through it for the entire year.
He had the knee scoped last month. This likely explains the 27-year-old's severe decline in production, and perhaps his surprisingly low usage after GM Jerry Reese promised last offseason that Jacobs would be the team's clear featured back. Consider Jacobs a decent buy-low in keeper leagues.

 Osi Umenyiora - DLFeb. 4 - 2:32 pm et
Giants DE Usi Umenyiora now says he wants to know the Giants' plans for him by the time offseason conditioning begins in March.
"I'd like to know what's going to happen -- if I'm going to be there or not," said Umenyiora. "I want to know exactly what the plans are and what my future's going to be." Umenyiora hasn't played well since 2007, so the Giants are going to have to decide if he's worth the headache this offseason.

 Eli Manning - QBFeb. 4 - 9:50 am et
Eli Manning expects to undergo precautionary testing and an MRI to make sure his injured right heel/foot is healing properly.
Eli should cruise through the tests. He said the foot is feeling much better, and he has been able to do workouts on it. Considering he never missed a game with the injury, this isn't a major concern heading into the 2010 season.

 Osi Umenyiora - DLFeb. 3 - 4:19 pm et
In an interview with radio station WFAN Wednesday, Giants DE Usi Umenyiora insisted he will quit football if he's not starting for the Giants in 2010.
"I'm not going to be a back up player, I can promise you that," Umenyiora said. "I'll stop playing football before I do that ever again. This has been just the worst offseason of my entire life." Umenyiora is still livid over his late-season benching, though he earned it with his subpar play in 2009. New coordinator Perry Fewell has already started mending fences, hinting that he sees Umenyiora as a full-time player.

 Plaxico Burress - WRFeb. 3 - 11:01 am et
In a CBS interview, Plaxico Burress vowed to play again and said he apologized to the Giants for tarnishing their franchise.
Burress said he is keeping in shape in prison by doing push-ups and sit-ups four times a week. He could be released as early as spring 2011 but will be 34 and two years removed from the league. It's hard to see him having an impact on the NFL again.

 Steve Smith - WRFeb. 1 - 9:06 am et
Steve Smith said he is in the process of switching agents to Tom Condon and Ben Dogra.
Smith is set to earn just $550,000 in 2010 and is coming off a season in which he shattered the Giants' single-season reception mark and made the Pro Bowl. He undoubtedly deserves a raise and Condon will likely push the Giants for a long-term deal. Condon also represents Eli Manning, who the Giants broke the bank for last season.

 Rocky Bernard - DLJan. 30 - 4:07 pm et
Giants DT Rocky Bernard is a candidate to be released this offseason.
Bernard was a free agent bust in 2009, unable to get into the defensive line rotation even when he was healthy. Though he has three years and $9.1 million remaining on his deal, none of it is guaranteed. The Giants have no reason to keep him around at that rate.

 Eli Manning - QBJan. 29 - 2:42 pm et
Giants QBs coach Chris Palmer is leaving the NFL to accept the head coaching job of the UFL's New York Sentinels.
Palmer did an impressive job converting Eli Manning from an inaccurate, turnover-prone passer into a Super Bowl MVP. The former Browns head coach was closer to David Carr over the past couple of years, however, and his exit won't have a drastic impact on Manning in 2010.

 Osi Umenyiora - DLJan. 28 - 2:38 pm et
Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell isn't committing to a specific defensive scheme until after he evaluates his players.
Fewell is steeped in the Tampa-2 scheme, which would be a significant change for the Giants' personnel. He did hint that DE Osi Umenyiora should be a full-time part of the defensive line rotation next season, but he was noncommittal about MLB Antonio Pierce's future.

 Darrelle Revis - DBJan. 22 - 2:42 pm et
New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg has temporarily renamed Manhattan "Revis Island" in honor of the All-Pro cornerback as Darrelle Revis and the Jets prepare to face the Colts on Sunday afternoon.
Bloomberg, who pushed hard for maximum punishment of Plaxico Burress following Plax's gun possession arrest, is clearly a Jets fan. He unveiled a municipal-style sign saying "Welcome to Revis Island" to be posted in Times Square. The sign will stay up as long as the Jets stay in the playoffs.

 Brandon Jacobs - RBJan. 22 - 2:20 pm et
Brandon Jacobs' arthroscopic knee surgery "went well," according to WFAN Giants beat reporter Paul Dottino.
It repaired a torn meniscus in his left knee. The procedure was routine, so Jacobs could be back as soon as spring minicamp. We can't blame Jacobs' disappointing '09 campaign on the knee because he ran without purpose before the injury. The 27-year-old could still offer value in 2010 fantasy drafts.

 Reuben Droughns - RBJan. 22 - 11:25 am et
Former Giants RB Reuben Droughns is reportedly under investigation by the Drug Enforcement Agency for growing marijuana in his house.
Droughns, who didn't get any sniffs from NFL teams after the Giants cut him last February, claims to be growing the pot for medicinal reasons. The DEA is predictably skeptical. Though Droughns does not have a medical marijuana card, his mother and brother do. He has not yet been arrested.

Bill Cowher downplayed talk of him holding out for the Giants head coaching job Thursday, explaining that he hasn't spoken to Jerome Bettis in two years.
Cowher didn't come right out and deny Bettis' claim, but he implied that his former running back would have no clue about his future plans. Bettis is credited with correctly predicting that Cowher would retire from the Steelers back in 2006. Until he takes another coaching job, the speculation is going to remain that Cowher is interested in the Giants.

 Carson Butler - TEJan. 20 - 12:54 pm et
Giants signed TE Carson Butler to a reserve/future contract.
Butler, an undrafted free agent out of Michigan in 2009, never caught more than 20 passes in a season as a Wolverine. He's an offseason camp body.
 Giants Defense - TMJan. 14 - 6:22 pm et
Ex-Steelers RB Jerome Bettis said Thursday that Bill Cowher hasn't accepted a head coaching job the past couple of seasons because he's "holding out" for the Giants job.
New York is "where he always wanted to be," said Bettis. "The Mara family, he's been very close to them ... and was on the inside track -- before the Giants won the Super Bowl -- for that job." Bettis, who is tight with his former head coach, believes Cowher will end up coaching the Giants eventually. If Tom Coughlin misses the playoffs again next year, it could happen as soon as 2011.

 Giants Defense - TMJan. 14 - 4:09 pm et
Updating a previous item, NFL.com's Jason LaCanfora seconds a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter that Perry Fewell will accept the Giants' offer to be defensive coordinator.
Fewell will receive a two-year deal. He was believed to be leaning toward joining close friend Lovie Smith in Chicago earlier in the week, but the staff's uncertain future may have pushed him toward the Giants job. Fewell will have much more talent to work with in New York, which makes the possibility of a quick turnaround appealing. A Tampa-2 devotee, Fewell may have to adjust his style to fit a Giants scheme that typically blitzes with more than just the front four.

 Bears Defense - TMJan. 14 - 1:48 pm et
The Chicago Sun-Times disputes an earlier report that Perry Fewell is "planning to accept" the Giants' defensive coordinator position.
Following his report, ESPN's Adam Schefter clarified that Fewell had been planning on accepting the Giants' job "as of [Thursday] morning," but the decision was not final. The Giants had not heard from Fewell as of Thursday morning, and he's believed to be still weighing the two offers -- possibly until the weekend. The Bears remain in the picture for now.

 Giants Defense - TMJan. 14 - 11:59 am et
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports former Bills interim coach Perry Fewell is "planning to accept" the Giants' defensive coordinator position over the Bears'.
It's a bit surprising, as Schefter reported earlier in the week that Fewell would accept the Bears' job if it was offered. Fewell's Cover-2 philosophy also would have been a much more natural fit with Lovie Smith, who already has the system in place. Fewell, one of best defensive backs coaches in the league, will be asked to fix the Giants' leaky secondary.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Perry Fewell is currently negotiating with both the Bears and the Giants regarding their defensive coordinator openings.
The Trib insists that Fewell is not waiting on the Bills' head coaching job despite reports to the contrary. Fewell is the first choice in both Chicago and New York, and he spoke to both teams Wednesday. Expect a decision shortly.
