 Brandon London - WRFeb. 9 - 12:13 pm et
Steelers signed WR Brandon London and P Adam Graessle.
The Dolphins were intrigued by London's speed and athleticism last offseason, but the special teamer and potential deep threat didn't even make the team out of training camp. Still very raw as a receiver, he's a project for the Steelers.

 James Harrison - LBFeb. 1 - 9:26 am et
Steelers OLB James Harrison said he didn't blitz as much in 2009 as he did during his breakout 2008 campaign.
"I started dropping a little more in coverage, would show blitz, and when I normally go, I didn't go," said Harrison, who had 10 sacks this season after racking up 16 in 2008. Teams paid more attention to Harrison, allowing LaMarr Woodley to set a career high with 13.5 sacks. The duo will return next season as one of the most feared pass-rushing tandems in the league.

 Casey Hampton - DLJan. 30 - 9:35 am et
Free agent NT Casey Hampton reiterated that it "will be a problem" if the Steelers franchise tag him next month.
"You say we're family and you'll take care of me, and I feel like that's a slap in my face if you franchise me," said the three-time Pro Bowler. "I want to be treated fair, and I think franchising me is not fair." Hampton is the ideal candidate for the tag because of his age (32) and history of weight fluctuation. He'll likely be franchised if a multi-year deal isn't worked out.

 Jeff Reed - KJan. 29 - 11:53 am et
The Steelers' top priority before the start of free agency is re-signing K Jeff Reed.
Reed has been one of the most reliable field goal kickers in the league since entering in 2002, though he's become one of the NFL's worst at kickoffs. The Steelers can use the transition tag if they can't come to a long-term agreement.

 Tyrone Carter - DBJan. 27 - 2:44 pm et
The Steelers are not expected to retain free agent S Tyrone Carter.
Carter can still play special teams, but was obviously stretched as an 11-game starter at strong safety last season. The 5'9/195-pound 34-year-old is unlikely to get more than a one-year, minimum deal on the open market.

 Casey Hampton - DLJan. 27 - 2:20 pm et
NFL.com's Jason La Canfora confirms that the Steelers consider retaining free agent NT Casey Hampton an offseason priority.
Owner Art Rooney II said as much a couple of weeks back. La Canfora also says Pittsburgh is trying hard to retain free agent FS Ryan Clark. Clark isn't a candidate for the franchise tag, but Hampton will likely get it if the sides can't work out a 2-3 year deal. There's next to no chance Hampton gets away.

 Willie Parker - RBJan. 27 - 9:20 am et
Impending free agent Willie Parker reiterated that he wants a chance to start next season.
"I'm a starter always looked at myself as starter, that's what I want to be," he said. Rashard Mendenhall is locked in as Pittsburgh's starter, so Parker is a near lock to be in another uniform next season. At 29 and no longer fast or elusive, we highly doubt Parker will get a chance to start in 2010.

 Deshea Townsend - DBJan. 27 - 9:15 am et
The Steelers are preparing as if unrestricted free agent CB Deshea Townsend won't be back, although he could return at a reduced rate.
Townsend, 35 in September, took over as a starting corner for a struggling William Gay down the stretch in 2009. If Townsend returns it will be as a nickel back or special package safety at best. The Steelers' bigger problem is that they invested two quality picks in CBs Keenan Lewis and Joe Burnett last year, and essentially got nothing from them all season.

 Troy Polamalu - DBJan. 27 - 12:30 am et
Steelers SS Troy Polamalu is not believed to have required surgery on the torn PCL that cost him 11 games in 2009.
The apparent rehab plan involves only rest. Polamalu appeared in just five games last season, though he impressively made three interceptions and was a difference maker when available. He should be ready in time for OTAs.

 Heath Miller - TEJan. 25 - 9:11 am et
Heath Miller has been selected to his first Pro Bowl as Dallas Clark's replacement.
At age 27, Miller shattered his previous career highs in yardage and catches thanks to the Steelers' pass-happy scheme. Known more for his great hands than explosive playmaking ability, Miller still looks more like a TE2 heading into next season. There's not much upside on his 2009 numbers.

 Ryan Clark - DBJan. 25 - 1:15 am et
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette believes that free agent FS Ryan Clark could get more money on the open market than from the Steelers.
Clark wants to return and the team wants him back, but Pittsburgh probably isn't going to make both of its safeties among the highest-paid players on the roster. Troy Polamalu will definitely be back despite a $6.1M salary. Ryan Mundy is the Steelers' only in-house alternative, and isn't a good one.

 LaMarr Woodley - LBJan. 22 - 4:30 pm et
Steelers LOLB LaMarr Woodley has been added to the AFC's Pro Bowl roster, taking the place of injured Brian Cushing.
Woodley has 25.5 sacks over the last two years and led Pittsburgh with 13.5 in 2009 despite going sack-less in seven of the first eight games. He also made 62 tackles and has passed James Harrison as the team's best OLB.

 Giants Defense - TMJan. 22 - 9:14 am et
Bill Cowher downplayed talk of him holding out for the Giants head coaching job Thursday, explaining that he hasn't spoken to Jerome Bettis in two years.
Cowher didn't come right out and deny Bettis' claim, but he implied that his former running back would have no clue about his future plans. Bettis is credited with correctly predicting that Cowher would retire from the Steelers back in 2006. Until he takes another coaching job, the speculation is going to remain that Cowher is interested in the Giants.

 Ben Roethlisberger - QBJan. 20 - 2:54 pm et
Ben Roethlisberger passed on a chance at the Pro Bowl to nurse the right shoulder injury he suffered in Week 17.
"His shoulder was not 100% from our final game in Miami," Steelers P.R. man Dave Lockett said. "Our doctors and trainers have recommended that he should allow it to heal 100%." Roethlisberger didn't require surgery, and figures to be just fine for OTAs in May. Matt Schaub will go to Miami instead.

 Derrick Doggett - LBJan. 20 - 1:01 pm et
Steelers signed LB Derrick Doggett to a reserve/future contract.
Doggett was annually an All-Pac Ten selection at Oregon State, but size (6'3/215) shortcomings nixed his stock in the 2008 draft, for which he was passed over. He resurfaced with the CFL in Winnipeg, making 27 special teams tackles in '09. He'll try to help Pittsburgh's reeling coverage units.
 Casey Hampton - DLJan. 16 - 4:14 pm et
Steelers owner Art Rooney II made it clear that re-signing impending free agent NT Casey Hampton is a priority this offseason.
According to the 32-year-old run stopper, the Steelers have promised not to franchise him. Rooney II, though, says the team still has to figure out the best way to keep him in black and gold. The franchise tag would cost Pittsburgh $6M in 2010.

 Dolphins Defense - TMJan. 15 - 11:46 am et
Steelers linebackers coach Keith Butler has reportedly turned down the Dolphins' defensive coordinator job.
It's back to the drawing board for Miami, after their top two choices for the job opted to pass on the opportunity. Butler is considered Dick LeBeau's heir apparent in Pittsburgh, so he could take over in the next couple of years.

 Rashard Mendenhall - RBJan. 15 - 10:14 am et
Owner Art Rooney II has made it clear to coach Mike Tomlin that he wants the Steelers' offensive philosophy to tilt back toward the run again this year.
Tomlin reportedly agreed that the running game will be a point of emphasis in 2010. This has been a big story in Pittsburgh, where they're blaming the defense's meltdown on Bruce Arians' high-scoring offense. Rashard Mendenhall will see an increase in carries next season, but the offense will continue to rely on the arm of its best player -- Ben Roethlisberger.

 Steelers Offense - TMJan. 14 - 12:37 pm et
Steelers hired former Bills offensive line coach Sean Kugler for the same position in Pittsburgh.
The move seems puzzling at first, with the Bills finishing last in the league in sacks allowed. Kugler drew kudos, however, for his work with raw tackles Demetrius Bell and Jamon Meredith as well as rookie guards Eric Wood and Andy Levitre, all of whom showed tangible signs of progress when healthy.

 Dolphins Defense - TMJan. 13 - 2:16 pm et
The Dolphins have received permission to interview Steelers LBs coach Keith Butler for their defensive coordinator vacancy.
Butler, 53, has long been considered the heir apparent to Steelers DC Dick LeBeau, but LeBeau isn't retiring yet. Butler was also under heavy consideration for the Cardinals' defensive coordinator position last offseason. He played in the league as a linebacker for the Seahawks from 1978 to 1987.
