 Josh Freeman - QBFeb. 6 - 11:41 am et
The Bucs want to see better accuracy and leadership skills from Josh Freeman in 2010.
"We want him to complete 65 percent of his passes. He needs to be the first guy in the building. It’s the leadership aspect we need from him. He needs to be more vocal with teammates in and out of the huddle," new QBs coach Alex Van Pelt said. Two weeks ago, the Bucs wanted a 60 percent completion rate, but now Van Pelt wants more. Freeman will need more weapons on offense after completing just 54.6% of his passes as a rookie.

 Buccaneers Offense - TMFeb. 2 - 1:15 pm et
Buccaneers hired Alex Van Pelt as quarterbacks coach.
Van Pelt was the Bills QBs coach in 2008 and coordinator in 2009. Considering the offensive line woes in Buffalo, he can hardly be blamed for Trent Edwards' regression. Bucs coordinator Greg Olson has already made nice progress with Josh Freeman's development.

 Antonio Bryant - WRJan. 29 - 10:30 am et
The Bucs and Antonio Bryant "aren't really engaging in talks of any kind," according to beat writer Stephen Holder.
The Bucs seem intent on letting Bryant hit free agency to set his own market before they decide whether to make a play for him. They won't be franchising him for a second straight season at roughly $10 million, and Bryant hasn't been stable enough to merit a big-money long-term deal. Expect Redskins GM Bruce Allen to show interest once Bryant hits the open market.

 Vince Wilfork - DLJan. 28 - 7:06 pm et
Free agent NT Vince Wilfork said Thursday that playing for either Miami or Tampa Bay would be a "dream come true."
Wilfork went to the University of Miami, so playing in Florida would be a homecoming. It's an unlikely scenario, however, as the Pats will slap him with the franchise tag if they can't come to an agreement on a long-term deal.

 Antonio Bryant - WRJan. 28 - 5:05 pm et
Bucs beat writer Ira Kaufman expects the Bucs to "move on without" free agent Antonio Bryant if he doesn't lower his asking price.
The Bucs have very little behind Bryant, but the team grew wary of his bulky knee and outspoken attitude during the season. They may kick the tires on Anquan Boldin and Brandon Marshall before making a legit offer to Bryant.

 Redskins Offense - TMJan. 28 - 10:25 am et
Redskins hired Keenan McCardell as wide receivers coach.
Interestingly, McCardell beat out former Bucs WRs coach Richard Mann, who left Tampa to try to catch on with the Redskins. With McCardell out of the picture, Ike Hilliard is the favorite for the same position with the Bucs.

 Buccaneers Defense - TMJan. 26 - 6:47 pm et
Beat writer Rick Stroud believes coach Raheem Morris' decision to usurp play-calling duties on defense in the second half of the season saved his job.
The Bucs defense allowed 29.2 points per game under former defensive coordinator Jim Bates the first 10 weeks while Morris' unit surrendered just 17 points per contest in the final six weeks. Morris' defense featured more creativity, especially in blitz packages. He'll retain play-calling duties again in 2010.

 Buccaneers Offense - TMJan. 26 - 5:38 pm et
Keenan McCardell will reportedly meet with the Bucs Tuesday night to interview for the vacant WRs coach position.
McCardell won a Super Bowl ring with the Bucs back in 2003. His primary competition for the job is believed to be Ike Hilliard, who played for the Bucs as recently as 2008.

 Josh Freeman - QBJan. 25 - 10:02 pm et
Bucs offensive coordinator Greg Olson has set a goal for Josh Freeman to complete 60% of his passes in 2010.
Freeman completed just 54.6% as a rookie. "He can work on making a lot of the throws," Olson said. "Deep balls throws and accuracy. Fundamentals. If you look at all the studies of playoff quarterbacks and winning quarterbacks, that's where it's at...60 percent." Freeman would also benefit from Tampa upgrading his receiver corps. No. 1 wideout Antonio Bryant is a free agent.

 Buccaneers Defense - TMJan. 20 - 1:21 pm et
Coach Raheem Morris confirmed that Jim Bates, formerly the Bucs' defensive coordinator, is no longer with the team.
Bates began 2009 calling plays on defense, had those duties stripped after a 1-9 start, and is now out of work. Once a defensive mastermind in the league, Bates may draw no interest this offseason. Morris is expected to call plays in 2010, coordinating the defense on top of his head coaching duties.

 Antonio Bryant - WRJan. 20 - 1:18 pm et
Bucs will not renew WRs coach Richard Mann's contract.
The Bucs are expected to look at Keenan McCardell and Ike Hilliard as potential replacements. Free agent Antonio Bryant has subtly threatened to leave the team if Mann was let go, so this could cost the Bucs more than their position coach. Mann also didn't get a fair shake with next to no talent after Bryant and seventh-round pick Sammie Stroughter.

 Gaines Adams - DLJan. 17 - 11:30 am et
Bears DE Gaines Adams passed away Sunday morning for undisclosed reasons. Profootballtalk.com reports that Adams is "believed" to have suffered a heart attack.
The Greenwood (SC) County Coroner said Adams "appeared to be in perfect health," so it appears his death was tragically a fluke. An autopsy will be done later today. Adams, the No. 4 overall pick in 2007, racked up 13 sacks, 76 tackles, and two interceptions in his first two seasons with Tampa before being dealt to Chicago prior to October's trade deadline. He was slated for a major role in 2010, likely replacing free agent LE Adewale Ogunleye as a starter.

 Buccaneers Defense - TMJan. 15 - 3:23 pm et
The contract Bucs coach Raheem Morris signed prior to the 2009 season contains a club option for the third year.
Thus, Morris is essentially on a one-year deal in 2010. The Bucs have five of the top-99 picks in this year's draft, so it will be a make-or-break season for the league's youngest head coach. Morris was 3-13 in his rookie campaign.

 Antonio Bryant - WRJan. 14 - 10:17 am et
With receivers coach Richard Mann expected to leave the Bucs this offseason, beat writer Rick Stroud suggests free agent Antonio Bryant could follow him out the door.
Bryant listed Mann and quarterback Josh Freeman as his only reasons for wanting to re-sign. The Bucs have reportedly grown tired of Bryant's attitude as well as his disappointing production in 2009. If Mann ends up on Mike Shanahan's coaching staff in D.C., as expected, Bryant could tag along.

 Derrick Brooks - LBJan. 13 - 11:31 am et
Free agent Derrick Brooks is still staying in shape and hoping to get a call from an NFL team this offseason.
Brooks, 36, sat out the entire 2009 season even though he wanted to play. He got a couple looks from the Saints and Bears but was never offered a contract. It's unlikely anything will change this offseason.

 Antonio Bryant - WRJan. 11 - 11:36 am et
The Bucs have given their wide receivers coach, Richard Mann, permission to interview with another team.
We only mention this because Mann is one of the reasons Antonio Bryant said he wanted to stay in Tampa. This could be a sign that the outspoken Bryant is getting ready to move on after playing this season as the Bucs' franchise player.

 Jermaine Phillips - DBJan. 10 - 9:03 pm et
Impending free agent S Jermaine Phillips was arrested Sunday on felony charges of "domestic battery by strangulation."
This won't help his market value, which was already likely to be minimal for the 31-year-old safety/linebacker. Phillips is being held in a Hillsbrough County jail without bond. He finished 2009 on I.R. with a broken thumb.

 Byron Leftwich - QBJan. 10 - 12:27 pm et
Byron Leftwich says he wants to stay with the Bucs.
Leftwich went 0-3 as a starter this season, landed on injured reserve and then served as a mentor to Josh Freeman. As much as he wants to play that role again, he's due a $3.5M roster bonus in March and will almost certainly be cut.

 Buccaneers Defense - TMJan. 7 - 5:56 pm et
A "high-ranking Buccaneers official" denied Thursday that the team has ever reached out to former Steelers coach Bill Cowher.
NFL.com's Jason LaCanfora reported as recently as Tuesday that Cowher was still an option in Tampa if he was willing to lower his asking price. The Bucs official labels any reports of Cowher to the Bucs as "categorically false." Cowher has stated that he will wait until 2011 to explore coaching opportunities.

 Josh Johnson - QBJan. 7 - 12:27 pm et
Beat writer Ira Kaufman says that the Bucs are willing to trade backup QB Josh Johnson for a draft pick.
Johnson started four games this season before Josh Freeman took over and compiled a 51.0 passer rating while throwing eight picks. He did show some flashes and tremendous mobility, so the Bucs could probably do worse for a No. 2 quarterback.
