 Matt Forte - RBFeb. 9 - 1:29 pm et
According to beat writer Jeff Dickerson, the Bears want to add a running back with "a little juice" to pair with Matt Forte this year.
Forte can be somewhat forgiven for his disastrous 2009 season due to the hamstring and knee injuries in addition to an abysmal offensive line. He is lacking in big-play ability, however, so the Bears will explore upgrades on Kevin Jones and Kahlil Bell as a complement to their starter.

 Jamar Williams - LBFeb. 9 - 10:04 am et
Beat writer Brad Biggs says that the Bears may let impending restricted free agent LB Jamar Williams move on.
Williams, a fourth-round pick in 2006, set a career-high in tackles this season with 35. He was only forced into action after a host of injuries ravaged the Bears' linebacking corps and he's expendable when everyone is healthy.

 Brian Urlacher - LBFeb. 9 - 9:59 am et
Bears MLB Brian Urlacher (wrist) is expected to be ready to participate when the offseason program begins.
Urlacher is a workout maven and should return to action in tip-top shape. He'll be 32 next season but we're still expecting him to be the focal point of a defense that struggled badly without him. However, beat writer Brad Biggs points out that Urlacher is on the books for $8.625 million in 2010 and the Bears may ask for a little of that back.

 Adewale Ogunleye - DLFeb. 9 - 9:31 am et
Beat writer Brad Biggs says that the Bears could negotiate with impending unrestricted free agent Adewale Ogunleye at some point.
The passing of Gaines Adams will likely force to the Bears to rethink their plans at defensive end. Ogunleye had 6 1/2 sacks in 14 games last season before fracturing his fibula. He'll test the market but may not find it too kind as he enters his age-33 season.

 Greg Olsen - TEFeb. 9 - 8:43 am et
New Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz said that Greg Olsen's first responsibility will be blocking.
"To just skip by [blocking] and say, 'He's a terrific receiver,' well...you might as well just put another wide receiver in there," Martz said. This highlights Martz's attitude toward tight ends. No matter how good a receiver Olsen is, Martz sees him as primarily a blocker. No Martz TE has ever caught more than 38 passes and Olsen's outlook has taken a gigantic hit heading into 2010.

 Devin Hester - WRFeb. 9 - 8:40 am et
New Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz said that he envisions Devin Hester moving to the slot and playing reduced snaps on offense.
Martz sees Hester going back to his role as a full-time returner. "It would be very difficult for him to play every snap on offense and still play effectively on special teams," Martz said. Hester would play the slot role that Az Hakim did for Martz's Rams and it's worth noting that Hakim never caught more than 53 passes in a season. Downgrade Hester's outlook for 2010.

 Nathan Vasher - DBFeb. 7 - 9:43 am et
Beat writer Dan Pompei says that the Bears' coaches lost confidence in CB Nathan Vasher last season.
Pompei would be surprised if the Bears bring Vasher back. He was only used once the Bears' secondary was hit by injuries and is due $2.95 million in 2010.

 Torry Holt - WRFeb. 7 - 9:13 am et
Beat writer Neil Hayes speculates that the Bears could pursue Torry Holt once the veteran is released.
Holt will obviously be linked to the Bears now that his old coach is Chicago's offensive coordinator. Holt would be a great mentor for the Bears' young receivers trying to learn Martz's system, but we doubt he would be anything more than the No. 4 receiver.

 Bears Defense - TMFeb. 5 - 4:25 pm et
Bears promoted DL coach Rod Marinelli to defensive coordinator.
Marinelli, who was a defensive line coach in Tampa before his head coaching stint in Detroit and eventual move to Chicago, will call defensive plays for the first time in his career. The Bears decided to stay in-house after whiffing on Perry Fewell, who was their No. 1 target entering the offseason. Marinelli knows the Bears' Tampa-2 scheme as well as anyone, so he's a natural fit despite his inexperience from a play-calling standpoint.
 Earl Bennett - WRFeb. 5 - 10:21 am et
Beat writer Brad Biggs believes Earl Bennett will be "pushed to maintain a starting job" in 2010.
A possession receiver, Bennett works best in the slot. New coordinator Mike Martz hinted, however, that he sees Devin Hester as the Bears' version of Az Hakim inside. Bennett may have to hold off Martz's "real diamond" Johnny Knox for a starting job.

 Devin Aromashodu - WRFeb. 5 - 10:19 am et
Beat writer Brad Biggs does not expect the Bears to make upgrading the wide receiver position a priority this offseason.
Devin Aromashodu, the only big target among the Bears receivers, would have been in the rotation early in the season had a quad injury not forced him out. Aromashodu was the first name Mike Martz mentioned when talking up the team's receivers, and Jay Cutler had an obvious preference for him in the final month. He could enter offseason workouts as the No. 1 starter.

 Devin Hester - WRFeb. 5 - 10:08 am et
Devin Hester revealed Thursday that he played through a left shoulder injury in addition to his ankle and calf ailments during the 2009 season.
"I really couldn't use my left shoulder," said Hester. He said he played through the injury at "75 to 80 percent." Hester won't need surgery, but he's still rehabbing it to build strength. The lower leg injuries also affected his ability to push off, sapping him of his quickness. The team could opt to curtail the smallish Hester's offensive snaps since he couldn't hold up to the pounding of two full-time roles.

 Jay Cutler - QBFeb. 4 - 1:33 pm et
Though he was the object of heavy criticism from Mike Martz last season, Jay Cutler is excited about his new offensive coordinator.
"I felt very comfortable with him," Cutler said. "The results of his offense speak for themselves." Cutler has been a bit of a hothouse flower in the past, so it's nice to see he won't be holding anything against Martz as they work to turn his career around.

 Devin Hester - WRFeb. 4 - 1:05 pm et
Devin Hester said he would "love" to cut down on his time at wide receiver if it helps him return to dominance as a returner.
"I know what I'm best at," he said. "The return game is my bread and butter." Hester was beginning to emerge as a legit receiving weapon before ankle and calf injuries sent his season into a tailspin. The Bears don't consider him a true No. 1 receiver, and they have depth with Devin Aromashodu emerging along with Johnny Knox and Earl Bennett. Hester's ultimate role may hinge on the Bears' offseason moves.

 Tommie Harris - DLFeb. 4 - 10:25 am et
Bears DT Tommie Harris will be surgery-free this offseason for the first time in three years.
Harris' production had fallen off due to injuries the past two seasons, but he started to show his old form in the second half of the 2009 season. If he's healthy and motivated in 2010, the Bears may have a chance to fix their run defense.

 Adrian Peterson - RBFeb. 3 - 6:49 pm et
The Bears are not expected to re-sign unrestricted free agent Adrian Peterson.
Now 30 years old, Peterson has lost explosiveness as a runner and receiver. The Bears no longer trust him as a backup running back, so he's limited to special teams duties. Injury-prone Kevin Jones is entering the final year of his contract, but Khalil Bell enters the offseason as the No. 2 back behind Matt Forte.

 Orlando Pace - TFeb. 3 - 1:34 pm et
Orlando Pace suggested that the hiring of Mike Martz could alter his plans for 2010.
Pace is considering retirement, but he seems to relish the thought of playing for Martz again after their time together in St. Louis earlier in the decade. Pace would have to take a paycut and return as a backup to Chris Williams.

 Chester Taylor - RBFeb. 3 - 9:58 am et
Beat writer Sean Jensen speculates that the Bears could show interest in impending unrestricted free agent Chester Taylor.
Taylor says he wants to go somewhere he can be a starter, but that's not going to happen at age 31. He'd be a nice fit in Mike Martz's system as an excellent pass protector and receiver out of the backfield. Still, with Matt Forte entrenched as the starter we'd expect Taylor to look for a spot where he can get more touches. The Vikings could also opt to retain Taylor by using a transition or franchise tag on him.

 Bears Defense - TMFeb. 3 - 8:56 am et
ESPN's Jeff Dickerson speculates that the Bears could be looking at Colts secondary coach Alan Williams for their vacant defensive coordinator position.
Williams is part of the Tony Dungy tree and has spent the last eight seasons coaching the Colts' defensive backs. He's obviously well-versed in the Tampa 2 defense, having worked with Monte Kiffin during a season with the Bucs in addition to his run in Indy.

 Greg Olsen - TEFeb. 2 - 12:20 pm et
Newly hired Bears coordinator Mike Martz insists TE Greg Olsen will be an integral part of his offense.
Martz called Olsen "different" from his previous tight ends, pointing out that he's a down-field mismatch for linebackers and safeties. Consider us unswayed. Two years ago, Martz spent the offseason showing Vernon Davis films of Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce and insisting he would use the physical mismatch "down the field...like a wide receiver." The fact remains that no Martz TE has ever caught more than 38 passes.
