 Matt Holliday - OFNov. 20 - 6:36 pm et
Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox have expressed interest in four of Scott Boras' clients -- Matt Holliday, Mike Gonzalez, Rick Ankiel and Adrian Beltre.
The Red Sox are looking at Holliday as a more expensive alternative should they fail to re-sign Jason Bay. Gonzalez, a left-hander, could presumably take the role of Billy Wagner if he signs as a closer elsewhere. Ankiel is a surprising name, but since they just acquired Jeremy Hermida, also a left-handed outfielder, it's hard to see a fit. Lastly, Beltre would only make sense if the Red Sox find a suitor for Mike Lowell, who has one year and $12 million left on his contract. It's important to understand that this is just the first day of free-agency, so look for the Red Sox to be linked to most, or all, of the major free agents.

 Matt Holliday - OFNov. 19 - 7:09 pm et
Giants GM Brian Sabean said Thursday that he has not contacted the agents representing big ticket outfielders Matt Holliday or Jason Bay.
Sabean doesn't believe Holliday or Bay realistically want to come to San Francisco and said he won't be a "stalking horse" this winter for the players' agents. The Giants are looking at "second-tier" free agents this offseason with a desire to bolster their batting order and bullpen.

 Matt Holliday - OFNov. 19 - 1:29 pm et
Angels owner Arte Moreno has ruled out signing Matt Holliday, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com.
Moreno reportedly made the declaration at the annual owners' meetings on Thursday. While Holliday's asking price may be too high, Moreno would consider signing Jason Bay if the club is unable to retain John Lackey, Chone Figgins and Vladimir Guerrero. Moreno acknowledged that the club can't likely to afford to keep all three.

 Matt Holliday - OFNov. 19 - 9:05 am et
According to FOXSports.com, Cardinals president Bill DeWitt III is optimistic about free agent Matt Holliday.
"Like any club, you have to set your budget and make sure you live within it," DeWitt said in a telephone interview with FOXSports.com. "As it relates to Matt, we have an internal sense of what we can do. Hopefully, he'll view that as enough." "The process has to play itself out," he continued. "There's no point in getting into the posturing that seems to be going on out there a little. We're trying to keep him. We love Matt. We're trying to get him signed. If not, we'll move on to a Plan B." Holliday officially hits the open market at 12:01 am on Friday.

 Allen Craig - 3BNov. 18 - 5:37 pm et
Cardinals purchased the contracts of OF Allen Craig, OF Jon Jay, OF Daryl Jones, C Bryan Anderson, 1B Mark Hamilton, RHP Adam Ottavino, RHP Francisco Samuel and LHP Tyler Norrick.
The promotions keep the eight from being selected in December's Rule 5 Draft. Craig, 25, was named the organization's player of the year, batting .322/.374/.547 with 26 home runs and 83 RBI for Triple-A Memphis. Jay, 24, has a .298/.363/.425 slash-line over parts of four minor league seasons. Jones and Anderson, both highly-touted prospects, are currently playing in the Arizona Fall League. Hamilton, 25, managed a .927 OPS between Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis in 2009. Ottavino, Samuel and Norrick have all shown potential, but have struggled with poor command.
 Mark Mulder - RNov. 18 - 4:43 pm et
According to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, it would be a "huge upset" if Mark Mulder doesn't attempt his comeback with the Brewers.
The stars seem to be aligned considering Mulder's relationship with new pitching coach Rick Peterson. The 32-year-old southpaw missed the entire 2009 season rehabbing from shoulder surgery. Mulder hasn't pitched a full season in the major leagues since 2005, but he would be a low-cost gamble for the Brewers, who plan to upgrade their starting pitching this winter.

 John Smoltz - SNov. 18 - 3:13 pm et
According to Jason Beck of MLB.com, the Tigers aren't interested in John Smoltz.
The talk of a homecoming was bound to come again, as it did last offseason, but the Tigers haven't shown any interest in signing the 42-year-old this time around. Beck notes that they have been in touch with his agent Keith Grunewald, however their interest was in regards to shortstop Adam Everett. Smoltz is expected to sign with a National League team, whether as a starter or reliever.

 Jason Bay - OFNov. 18 - 9:04 am et
Cardinals GM John Mozeliak indicated Tuesday that the Cardinals will not purse outfielder Jason Bay, even if they miss out on Matt Holliday.
"We'll see how the market develops," Mozeliak said. "Is (Bay) a possibility? Sure. But right now it's fair to say he's not one of our top priorities." The Cardinals are reportedly intrigued by free agent Xavier Nady and would rather spend major cash on bolstering their infield and starting rotation if Matt Holliday moves on. Bay is drawing heavy interest from the Red Sox and Mets.

 Mark DeRosa - 3BNov. 18 - 8:46 am et
A major league source has informed FOXSports.com that the Phillies are the favorite to land free-agent utilityman Mark DeRosa.
The Phils are expected to let Pedro Feliz walk this winter and could use DeRosa as his replacement at third base. The Mariners, Yankees, Nationals, Dodgers, Orioles, Rangers and Giants have also shown interest, and the Cardinals might attempt to re-sign him. DeRosa, 34, hit .250/.319/.433 with 23 homers and 78 RBI in 2009. He had wrist surgery in October.

 Troy Glaus - 3BNov. 17 - 9:50 pm et
Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak has "pretty much ruled out the possibility" of Troy Glaus being a Cardinal in 2010.
Not a surprise, as the Cardinals feel he is too unreliable with health concerns. Glaus missed all but 14 games in 2009 with shoulder and back issues. The 33-year old will likely be forced to accept a position switch to first base. He still has plenty of power potential, and a team -- particularly an AL team -- will likely give him a shot.

 John Smoltz - SNov. 17 - 9:18 pm et
Debunking an earlier report, the Astros are not interested in John Smoltz.
FOXSports.com earlier named the Astros as a team having interest in Smoltz, but sources indicated to MLB's Hot Stove Blog that interest "just isn't there." Smoltz had a rough go of it in the AL with Boston in 2009, but things brightened up once he joined the St. Louis Cardinals and figures to land somewhere in the NL again in 2010.

 John Smoltz - SNov. 17 - 4:43 pm et
According to FOXSports.com, several teams have shown interest in free agent John Smoltz.
The report names the Cardinals, Dodgers, Mets, Mariners, Astros, Rangers and Orioles among teams with at least some level of interest in the 42-year-old. According to the report, Smoltz is open to being a starter or reliever and some teams have even inquired about him as a closer, said a source. Smoltz was 3-8 with a 6.35 ERA in 2009, but found success after joining the Cardinals, posting a 4.26 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 40/9 K/BB ratio.

 Joel Pineiro - SNov. 17 - 9:29 am et
Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News confirms that the Mets are intrigued by free agent right-hander Joel Pineiro.
SI.com's Jon Heyman first suggested the connection last week but noted that Pineiro's current asking price (thought to be around three years, $30 million) might be a bit high for the Mets. The 31-year-old Type B free agent went 15-12 this season with a 3.49 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and MLB-leading 60.2 GB% in 32 starts. His 1.14 BB/9 was a four-year low in Major League Baseball.

 Matt Holliday - OFNov. 17 - 8:49 am et
Angels general manager Tony Reagins said Monday that he's not currently pursuing free agent outfielder Matt Holliday.
"He's a talented player," Reagins said of the 29-year-old Holliday. "But our focus is not on him right now." The Angels are hoping to attract John Lackey and Chone Figgins back to Anaheim and will attempt to re-sign both before trying for a big-money free agent bat. As of this moment, Holliday's openly interested suitors are the Red Sox, Mets and Cardinals.

 Matt Holliday - OFNov. 16 - 3:20 pm et
The Yankees are not interested in signing Matt Holliday, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.
Writes Olney, via Twitter: "They'll talk to Boras to keep other bidders honest, but corner outfield not a priority for them." This is no surprise, as the Yankees did their high-end shopping last offseason. Still, it's a sage strategy by the defending champs to keep Scott Boras on speed dial to ensure one of their competitors has to pay through the nose for Holliday.

 Matt Holliday - OFNov. 16 - 12:50 pm et
Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com cites a source as saying Matt Holliday will not give any special preference to the Cardinals.
"He was there two months," said a source with knowledge of the developing Boras/Holliday plan. "St. Louis is a good place to play — a great city with a good fan base. But do I think it holds any special significance to him? No." Once their exclusive window to negotiate closes at 12:01 am on Friday, they'll become just another team in the eyes of Scott Boras.

 Matt Holliday - OFNov. 12 - 10:10 am et
Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak doesn't want to enter a bidding war for Matt Holliday.
"I think it's fair to say when we present an offer, that's pretty much going to be our position," Mozeliak said. "We're not really interested in becoming involved in a long, drawn-out back-and-forth." Mozeliak met with Scott Boras during the general manager meetings in Chicago this week, but plans to have a face-to-face meeting with Holliday in the very near future. If the process gets drawn out, Mozeliak is prepared to move on with alternatives, including fortifying the starting rotation.

 Xavier Nady - OFNov. 11 - 4:48 pm et
Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Cardinals have interest in Xavier Nady.
Nady is one of Scott Boras' clients, so while the Cardinals addressed the Matt Holliday situation at length, they also reportedly discussed Nady, who is currently rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. It would be a tough sell in St. Louis if Holliday bolts for the highest bidder, but Nady could be a low-cost alternative.

 Mark DeRosa - 3BNov. 11 - 3:51 pm et
Jon Heyman of SI.com writes that several teams have already inquired about Mark DeRosa.
Heyman lists the Yankees, Mariners, Nationals, Dodgers, Phillies, Orioles, Rangers and Giants as those with early interest in the 34-year-old. DeRosa underwent surgery on his left wrist in October, but it doesn't look to have limited his potential suitors.

 Matt Holliday - OFNov. 11 - 11:00 am et
Adam Wainwright told 1380 KSLG in St. Louis Wednesday that he believes Matt Holliday will return to St. Louis for the 2010 season and beyond.
"I think he'll be back," Wainwright said. "I know Matt, know his family, and know he wants to back. It's going to take a perfect situation to get him to leave." The comments, however valid, won't sit well with Holliday's agent, Scott Boras, who rightfully seeks top dollar for his clients. If Holliday is looking for the most lucrative deal, he's not likely to find it in St. Louis. But if he's truly happy in the environment and hopes to stay, he can always call off the dogs and sign for a contract that will, either way, be fairly handsome.
