Chad Pennington
- QB
Feb. 5 - 11:56 am et
Though he acknowledges that it "would be tough" to return to the Jets, Chad Pennington said he'd entertain the opportunity to back up Mark Sanchez.
Dolphins beat writer Armando Salguero puts the odds of Pennington returning to Miami at 50-50, so there's a good chance he'll be "playing the free agent game." Provided he's healthy, Pennington would be a major upgrade on Kellen Clemens for a team expected to contend in 2010.

Tanner Purdum

Feb. 5 - 9:55 am et
Jets signed LS Tanner Purdum.
James Dearth, the team's long snapper since 2001, is an unrestricted free agent. The Jets may be willing to let him walk after a few "hiccups" in 2009.

Adalius Thomas
- LB
Feb. 4 - 5:40 pm et
Adalius Thomas conceded Thursday that he's probably done with the Patriots.
Thomas revealed that "something happened" between him and coach Bill Belichick in Week 1, and he still doesn't understand it. Due close to $5 million in 2010, his Patriots days are over. Rex Ryan could be interested in trying his former star linebacker in green and white.

Marques Douglas
- DL
Feb. 4 - 11:32 am et
The Jets are expected to attempt to re-sign free agent DL Marques Douglas.
Douglas, a rotational lineman, "showed a knack for making plays" in 2009. A favorite of coach Rex Ryan after following him out of Baltimore, the 33-year-old is likely to stay with the Jets.

Shaun Ellis
- DL
Feb. 4 - 11:30 am et
Jets DE Shaun Ellis is a candidate for knee surgery this offseason.
Ellis didn't miss time due to the knee problem, so it would likely be a minor procedure. One of four Jets defensive lineman over 30, Ellis is reaching the point where he can't be counted on to stay healthy.

Mark Sanchez
- QB
Feb. 3 - 2:22 pm et
Scheduled to undergo surgery to strengthen a patella-stabilizing ligament in his left knee in two weeks, Mark Sanchez expects to be ready for "as many OTAs as possible."
Sanchez described the surgery as "partially arthroscopic" and "minimally invasive," and he insists he'll "definitely" be ready for training camp. Using a car analogy, doctors advised undergoing the procedure now to avoid constant upkeep down the road. The surgery shouldn't affect Sanchez's draft status this summer.

Nnamdi Asomugha
- DB
Feb. 3 - 12:38 pm et
Nnamdi Asomugha insists he was "kidding" about lobbying Jets coach Rex Ryan for a trade to pair him with Darrelle Revis.
"The only thing we were 'dead serious' about was the fact that it would be fun to one day play on the same team," said Asomugha. "We were two guys enjoying the Pro Bowl and completely clowning around during the week. We were playfully recruiting each other." Asomugha is stuck in Oakland, so this is the last we should hear about the issue.

Ricky Foley
- LB
Feb. 2 - 5:42 pm et
British Columbia Lions LB Ricky Foley, CFL's sacks leader in 2009, is scheduled to visit the Patriots on Thursday.
Foley has already visited with the Jets and will also meet with the Rams. Foley's agent admits his client isn't as good as former BC Lions teammate Cameron Wake of the Dolphins, but he could end up on NFL roster as a special teamer.

Mark Sanchez
- QB
Feb. 2 - 9:17 am et
After receiving 2-3 opinions, Mark Sanchez has opted to have surgery on his left knee.
The surgery will involve stabilization of the patella tendon that Sanchez injured at USC. He'll have the operation in 2-3 weeks. The procedure is said to be arthroscopic, meaning Sanchez should be 100% no longer than two months after it. He'll miss some spring workouts, but won't be limited in training camp. The surgery doesn't affect Sanchez's 2010 fantasy outlook.

Nnamdi Asomugha
- DB
Feb. 1 - 3:08 pm et
Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha said at the Pro Bowl that he wants to play for the Jets and has discussed the idea with coach Rex Ryan.
This would constitute tampering. "Me and (Darrelle) Revis have been talking to Rex to try to do something," Asomugha said. "You may see us in the future. There's a little bit of talk going on." Asomugha signed the richest contract for a defensive player in NFL history last year and isn't going anywhere. Ryan may still have to answer to the league about the two's alleged "talks."

Nick Mangold
- C
Feb. 1 - 12:00 pm et
Jets C Nick Mangold said after Sunday's Pro Bowl that he wants a new contract.
"I know -- and I hope -- they'll do the right thing," he said. Mangold added that he's "not too worried" about the situation yet, but the team will likely make an effort to lock him up this spring. One of the game's best centers, Mangold will be in the last year of his rookie contract in 2010.

Darrelle Revis
- DB
Feb. 1 - 11:24 am et
The Jets are expected to approach Darrelle Revis this offseason about a contract extension, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Thanks to voidable years, Revis' contract will be up after the 2010 season. The Jets will try to lock up Revis to a long-term extension and Schefter says it could be one of the richest deals in NFL history. Even though he didn't win the Defensive Player of the Year award, Revis meant more to his defense than any other player in the league in 2009.

Dawan Landry
- DB
Jan. 31 - 11:13 am et
Beat writer Mark Cannizzaro speculates that the Jets could make a play for Ravens SS Dawan Landry.
Landry is set to become a restricted free agent that will be an expensive tender, so we doubt he's going anywhere. Of course, this would be a non-issue if the Jets bring back Kerry Rhodes.

Vernon Gholston
- LB
Jan. 29 - 1:00 pm et
Jets beat writer Rich Cimini scoffed at GM Mike Tannenbaum's claim that there's no data to suggest Vernon Gholston doesn't have passion for football.
"I almost fell out of my chair," Cimini said. The National Football Post's Michael Lombardi had a similar response, saying "the offseason isn't the problem; playing football is." Gholston clearly has all of the tangibles, yet something is still missing.

Thomas Jones
- RB
Jan. 29 - 10:34 am et
Beat writer Rich Cimini believes there's a "50-50" chance Thomas Jones returns to the Jets in 2010.
The sides may be moving in opposite directions. Jones has been angling for a contract extension, and the Jets seem hesitant to pay his $2.8 million roster bonus in March. Jones will likely have to swallow his pride and accept a pay-cut and a reduced role to return.

Mark Sanchez
- QB
Jan. 28 - 5:24 pm et
Updating a previous item, Mark Sanchez is considering elective surgery on his
left
knee to fix the patella stabilizing ligament.
The surgery would sideline him for two months. Sanchez first injured his left knee at USC in 2008, and it flared up on him at times early in his rookie season. It was his right knee that sustained a sprained PCL late in the season against the Bills. Sanchez is expected to make a decision on the surgery within the next week.

Thomas Jones
- RB
Jan. 28 - 4:48 pm et
Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum was noncommittal on Thomas Jones' future Thursday.
Tannenbaum said the team "hopes to have him back," but he also pointed to economic factors that could play into the decision. Jones is due a $2.8M roster bonus in March in addition to a $2.8M salary. The five straight seasons of 290+ carries appeared to finally catch up to him in the playoffs, which likely has the Jets re-thinking their backfield plans for 2010. Jones could be asked to take a paycut befitting his new status as a complementary player.

Vernon Gholston
- LB
Jan. 28 - 4:44 pm et
Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum insists that OLB Vernon Gholston will definitely be back in 2010.
Tannenbaum praised the former No. 6 overall pick's "great work ethic," adding that this will be an important offseason. While Tannenbaum has drafted well the past few years, Gholston remains a glaring swing-and-miss.

Kellen Clemens
- QB
Jan. 28 - 4:40 pm et
GM Mike Tannenbaum indicated that the Jets would offer a tender to restricted free agent QB Kellen Clemens as opposed to cutting him loose.
Clemens was brutal in limited action in 2009, so Tannenbaum's announcement doesn't say much for the team's confidence in Kevin O'Connell and Erik Ainge. Clemens would have a hard time landing a No. 2 job on the open market, much less a starting opportunity.

Mark Sanchez
- QB
Jan. 28 - 4:32 pm et
Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum indicated that Mark Sanchez will be ready "well before training camp" if Dr. James Andrews recommends knee surgery.
A decision is expected to be made shortly. Tannenbaum indicated that only one knee would possibly need surgery while the other knee would be rehabbed. The surgery would be minor in nature, which would leave Sanchez plenty of time to recover over the next few months.
