 Sidney Rice-WR- VikingsJan. 22 - 1:52 pm et
Mike Lombardi of the National Football Post expects the Saints to double team Sidney Rice in Sunday's NFC title game.
Lombardi points out that Saints DC Gregg Williams often doubled opposing No. 1 receivers down the stretch. Dallas singled Rice in last week's loss to the Vikings, but the Saints won't make the same mistake. This is where the potential absence of Percy Harvin (migraines) could really hurt Minnesota.

 Joe Horn-WR- FalconsDec. 18 - 4:13 pm et
Free agent Joe Horn told a New Orleans TV station Friday that he would like to retire as a member of the Saints.
The 38-year-old in January could sign a one-day contract to retire with the team he played seven seasons with and made four Pro Bowls for from 2000-2006. Horn ended his career as a Falcon in '07, averaging 9.0 yards a catch.

 Kevin Williams-DL- VikingsDec. 11 - 10:11 am et
A Jan. 14 hearing is set in Hennepin County, Minnesota for the NFL to argue that the StarCaps case should be decided in their favor instead of delaying the trial until march.
It's a tricky situation for the NFL. If they succeed, there would no longer be an injunction protecting Kevin Williams and Pat Williams. Commissioner Goodell could then suspend the players immediately. At this point, it's hard to imagine the local court siding with the NFL on Jan. 14. It's just as hard to picture Goodell suspending key Vikings and Saints during the postseason.

 Paul Spicer-DL- SaintsNov. 7 - 9:28 am et
The Saints worked out free agent DL Paul Spicer and Rodrique Wright in the past week.
The Saints are suddenly thin at the DT spot after injuries to Sedrick Ellis and Kendrick Clancy. Spicer was with the Saints all offseason and the Saints were likely just seeing what kind of shape he was in. Another option for the Saints is to promote DeMario Pressley from the practice squad.

 Damion McIntosh-T- SeahawksSep. 16 - 6:55 pm et
Former Chiefs OT Damion McIntosh is en route to New Orleans for a free agent visit.
He left Seattle without a contract earlier this week. The 32-year-old would provide depth behind Jermon Bushrod and Zach Strief with New Orleans.

 Derrick Brooks-LB- BuccaneersAug. 12 - 6:55 pm et
After working out for the Saints, free agent LB Derrick Brooks left New Orleans without a contract Wednesday.
They didn't sign Derek Smith, either. Brooks is likely weighing his options. The Saints may only have offered a backup spot behind WLB Scott Shanle.

 Derek Smith-LB- DolphinsAug. 11 - 2:26 pm et
In addition to Derrick Brooks, the Saints had in free agent LB Derek Smith for a workout Tuesday.
Smith is a tad younger than Brooks at 34, but would be the better option if the Saints want an inside linebacker. Brooks is purely an outside 'backer.

 Michael Vick-QB- EaglesJul. 29 - 3:12 pm et
Saints GM Mickey Loomis stood by his statement from last month that he's not interested in adding free agent Michal Vick.
The Saints have given no indications that they'd be interested in Vick, yet many outlets still consider him a possible fit in New Orleans. We don't see the Saints taking the ball out of Drew Brees' hands.

 Jarvis Green-DL- PatriotsJul. 22 - 3:36 pm et
Patriots contract-year DE Jarvis Green attempted Wednesday to clarify a statement he made to a Louisiana newspaper, which he told he'd "love to come home and finish off as a Saint."
He was also quoted as saying, "this is my last year with the Patriots." "I don't think I said it like that," Green said Wednesday. "Me being from Louisiana and playing at LSU and...you say it would be a dream to play for the Saints. But I'd love to stay a Patriot." Green is due $2.9 million this season.

 Jeremy Jarmon-DL- RedskinsJul. 16 - 9:14 pm et
The Redskins reportedly beat five teams to the punch by using a third-round claim on Kentucky DE Jeremy Jarmon in the supplemental draft.
According to NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the Eagles, Bucs, Saints, Lions and Patriots all put in fourth-round claims. The Redskins did their homework and had Jarmon's value pegged accurately.

 Edgerrin James-RB- SeahawksJul. 6 - 3:13 pm et
FOXSports' Alex Marvez writes that free agent Edgerrin James "would have to accept a backup spot" if he is to sign with the Saints.
This is likely why Edge won't go to New Orleans. The Saints would use him as a true backup for Pierre Thomas, basically replacing Reggie Bush. Bush is now a slot receiver with extra passing-down value, and essentially no longer a ball carrier. Marvez says the Saints are happy with starting Thomas, meaning they probably won't offer Edge more than the minimum.

 La'Roi Glover-DL- RamsJun. 22 - 8:39 am et
Former Saints Pro Bowl DT La'Roi Glover announced his retirement from football.
A fifth-round pick by the Raiders in 1996, Glover made his mark with the Saints. His 17 sacks in 2000 led the NFL while ranking second in history among defensive tackles. The six-time Pro Bowler finished his 13-year career with 83.5 sacks, an outstanding number for an interior lineman.

 Edgerrin James-RB- SeahawksJun. 9 - 3:53 pm et
Coach Sean Payton says the Saints have no immediate plans to sign a veteran free agent running back.
"Right now we're content with the guys we have," Payton said. The Saints called Edgerrin James a possibility a month ago, but that was while Pierre Thomas was rehabbing from wrist surgery. Thomas is close to 100% now.

 Derrick Brooks-LB- BuccaneersJun. 9 - 12:45 pm et
Coach Sean Payton shot down a rumor Tuesday that the Saints might have interest in free agent Derrick Brooks.
The speculation began right after Dan Morgan retired. Fans keep trying to replace WLB Scott Shanle, but the coaching staff isn't nearly as down on him.

 Edgerrin James-RB- SeahawksMay. 19 - 3:29 pm et
Saints GM Mickey Loomis confirmed a report that his team is continuing to look into the possibility of signing free agent Edgerrin James.
"We’ve looked into it and we’re going to look into it some more," Loomis said. However, the GM acknowledged that "the price has to be right." That likely means New Orleans isn't willing to guarantee Edge much money or a role.

 Edgerrin James-RB- SeahawksMay. 19 - 9:23 am et
The Saints are reportedly considering making a contract offer to free agent Edgerrin James.
The Saints want a bruising runner for short-yardage situations, which makes Edge a bizarre fit. The veteran has struggled at the goal-line and was often replaced by Tim Hightower throughout 2008. Despite Edge's modest success during the Cardinals playoff run, the 30-year-old wouldn't be a major threat to Pierre Thomas' fantasy value.

 Pisa Tinoisamoa-LB- BearsMay. 18 - 3:44 pm et
Free agent LB Pisa Tinoisamoa is searching for "starter's money" as he makes the rounds on the market, according to Saints beat writer Jeff Duncan.
Duncan says the Saints would be interested, but Tinoisamoa's asking price is too high. They'll likely enter camp with Dan Morgan pushing Scott Shanle on the weak side. Tinoisamoa would fit better in a Tampa 2-style scheme.

 Anthony Hargrove-DL- SaintsMay. 14 - 4:04 pm et
The Saints worked out free agent DE Anthony Hargrove recently, according to the National Football Post.
Hargrove, 26, was reinstated from a one-year suspension over the winter after sitting out 2008 for violating the league's substance abuse policy three times. He could compete with nickel end Bobby McCray in New Orleans.

 Edgerrin James-RB- SeahawksMay. 6 - 5:38 pm et
The New Orleans Times-Picayune considers the Saints "not likely" to sign free agent Edgerrin James.
It appears GM Mickey Loomis was just doing his due diligence while holding "discussions" about the turning-31 tailback. The Saints seem satisfied with undrafted rookies P.J. Hill and Herb Donaldson battling it out with Mike Bell and Lynell Hamilton behind Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush.

 Edgerrin James-RB- SeahawksMay. 6 - 2:00 pm et
Saints GM Mickey Loomis revealed Wednesday that the club has had "internal discussions" about signing free agent Edgerrin James.
Discussions would be expected, so it's hard to say how serious this is. They also talked up drafting Beanie Wells, then passed. Edge wouldn't be guaranteed a big role and isn't a better short-yardage runner than Pierre Thomas. Loomis, clearly wearing his bad idea jeans, will revisit the talks after this weekend's minicamp. "We do feel a lot better about what we have in-house than people do outside of our building," Loomis said.
