Lynch's career hits pause

Marshawn Lynch is the new Plaxico Burress.

That's the first reaction to the news that Lynch was arrested in the Los Angeles area (Culver City) on felony charges of possession of a concealed firearm Saturday. His story, like Burress', is one Rotoworld will be updating on a regular basis for months on end.

My second reaction: I wish I held on to Fred Jackson in my keeper league.

Predicting Lynch's future during the first few days of this story is futile. All we know is that Lynch's professional future will be in some doubt for the foreseeable future.

Start with his legal problems, which will unwind slowly, if Burress' case is instructive. If Lynch survives that process reasonably intact, avoiding jail, he will then deal with the league and the Bills.

The NFL may see him as a repeat offender after his alleged hit and run case last off-season. Lynch was not charged with a crime in that case and wound up pleading guilty to a mere traffic infraction, but he was in the headlines for the wrong reasons for months. This issue is far more serious. The Bills, who always speaks of character issues, could take their own stand

I will leave all the messy legal repercussions to people that know what they are talking about like Mike Florio, Roger Cossack, and the district attorney who serves Culver City, CA. (Kudos also go to Florio for first reporting that a Marshawn Lynch was arrested, even if he couldn't pin down quite yet if it was the Marshawn Lynch.)

The football impact is easier to dissect. The Bills should look to improve their depth at running back, but they aren't desperate. Fred Jackson is one of the most underrated backs in the NFL. Lynch has shown flashes of greatness, especially in his rookie year, but Jackson was steadier in 2008, often outplaying Lynch. Jackson could excel in a bigger role if Lynch were to miss time. He may not be ready to carry the load by himself, but he's a three-down back who could lead a job-share.

After Jackson, 2008 sixth-round pick Xavier Odom is an unproven commodity. Buffalo should look to add depth for insurance in April's draft, but shouldn't feel compelled to invest heavily in free agency. By April, the Bills should have a better handle on Lynch's status.

Lynch's troubles could put more pressure on Buffalo to add offensive firepower. Outside of Lee Evans, Trent Edwards is still looking for explosive weapons on offense. Lynch was supposed to be the rock of the offense, a consistent top-15 fantasy back, but his off-field troubles will take priority now.

Lynch is an affable guy, but a sunny personality can't help him now. The workmanlike start to his career has hit pause.
