 John Halama-R- Braves Nov. 20 - 1:39 pm et

According to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy, left-hander John Halama hopes to sign a minor league contract with the Brewers next week.
The Brew Crew will have a scout in the stands Friday night when Halama takes the mound in the Dominican Republic. Assuming all goes well, Milwaukee will give the 37-year-old lefty a shot. He hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2006, but posted a 4.48 ERA in 16 appearances (13 starts) this season at Triple-A Gwinnett. The Brewers really are desperate for arms.

 Lee Hyde-S- Braves Nov. 20 - 10:40 am et

Braves purchased the contracts of LHPs Lee Hyde, Jose Ortegano and Jonny Venters and RHPs Jeff Lyman and Kyle Coffield.
The move protects all five pitchers from the Rule 5 Draft. These guys are far away from the majors, but are still promising members of the Braves organization. Hyde, a 24 year-old left-hander, posted a 3.00 ERA and 13/12 K/BB ratio in the Arizona Fall League this season.
 Derek Lowe-S- Braves Nov. 19 - 6:20 pm et

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Braves are having trouble shopping Derek Lowe to other clubs.
The Braves have some of the strongest pitching depth in the majors and are hoping to deal an arm for a hitter this winter. But, as Rosenthal points out, Lowe turns 37 early next season, is guaranteed $15 million in each of the next three seasons, and he had a 6.65 ERA in his final nine starts of '09. It's going to be a hard sell despite his 15 wins. He allowed 232 hits this past season, the most of any NL pitcher.
 Jason Heyward-OF- Braves Nov. 19 - 10:11 am et

Mark Bowman of MLB.com writes that prospect Jason Heyward may begin the season in the major leagues.
According to Bowman, general manager Frank Wren may attempt to find a veteran outfielder in the event that the 20-year-old Heyward isn't ready. And with just 173 at-bats above the Class A level, a backup plan wouldn't be a bad idea, at least for a little while. While Heyward could force his way into the lineup with a strong spring training, we see the Braves waiting until at least June so he avoids becoming a "Super Two."

 Javier Vazquez-S- Braves Nov. 19 - 9:56 am et

The Braves intend to trade either Javier Vazquez or Derek Lowe, reports Frankie Piliere of AOL Fanhouse.
Neither Vazquez or Lowe will command the quality prospects that Roy Halladay will, rendering them a potential bargain on the trade market. Who will move depends on the offers they receive. The Braves would prefer to unload Lowe, however his contract -- $45 million over three years -- will limit the number of potential suitors. Vazquez has one year and $11.5 million left on his contract. After going 15-10 with a 2.87 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 2009, he will draw more interest.

 Mike Gonzalez-R- Braves Nov. 18 - 10:10 am et

According to the New York Post, the Red Sox have requested medical records on free agent relievers Mike Gonzalez and Rafael Soriano.
Gonzalez, 31, went 5-4 with a 2.42 ERA this season and converted 10 of 17 save chances. Soriano, 29, was 1-6 with a 2.97 ERA in 77 games and racked up 102 strikeouts in 75 2/3 innings. He converted 27 of 31 save chances. Both would serve as excellent setup men in the Boston bullpen.

 Mike Gonzalez-R- Braves Nov. 17 - 4:37 pm et

Mark Bowman of MLB.com cites to major league sources who say that Mike Gonzalez has chosen Scott Boras to serve as his agent.
Gonzalez was previously represented by Dan Lozano of the Beverly Hills Sports Council. The new affiliation shouldn't affect the pitcher's chances of returning to Atlanta, as general manager Frank Wren has a good working relationship with Boras, according to Bowman. Since Gonzalez is a Type A free agent, the Braves will almost certainly offer him arbitration. Gonzalez posted a 2.42 ERA in a career-high 80 appearances as Atlanta's set-up man in 2009.

 Buddy Carlyle-R- Braves Nov. 17 - 3:07 pm et

According to Kyodo News, RHP Buddy Carlyle has signed with the Nippon Ham Fighters of Japan's Pacific League.
The 32-year-old Carlyle has a 5.61 ERA in parts of six seasons in the majors. He had an 8.86 ERA in 16 appearances with the Braves in 2009, but missed nearly three months with a back strain and diagnosis of Type-1 diabetes.

 Mike Gonzalez-R- Braves Nov. 13 - 7:16 pm et

Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports that the Nationals have interest in Mike Gonzalez and Mark DeRosa.
Gonzalez posted a 2.42 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 80 appearances as Atlanta's set-up man in 2009 and would certainly improve a bullpen that was the worst in the majors for the great majority of the season. He'd be a wiser end-game option than Mike MacDougal. As for the versatile DeRosa, Washington will have plenty of competition, as several teams have already inquired about the 34-year-old. Though he played mostly third base in 2009, Ladson notes that the Nationals have interest in him as a second baseman or left fielder.

 Tim Hudson-S- Braves Nov. 12 - 3:24 pm et

Braves signed Tim Hudson to a three-year, $28 million contract extension.
He'll take home $9 million in each of the next three seasons. The new contract also includes a fourth-year club option for 2013 worth $9 million, with a $1 million buyout. Considering the weak market for starting pitching, Hudson could have earned more on the open market, however he decided to grant the Braves a sizable "hometown discount" in order to stay in Atlanta. Hudson was 2-1 with a 3.61 ERA and 1.46 WHIP over seven starts in September after returning from Tommy John surgery. The 34-year-old right-hander is 11th among active pitchers with 148 career wins.
 Tim Hudson-S- Braves Nov. 12 - 9:47 am et

David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the three-year extension for Tim Hudson is official.
A conference call is scheduled for 10:30 am ET on Thursday. Hudson received a three-year deal that will reportedly pay him $9 million per season. The contract includes an option for a fourth year.
 Jordan Schafer-OF- Braves Nov. 12 - 9:06 am et

Braves general manager Frank Wren said Jordan Schafer is recovering well from left wrist surgery and expects to get the cast off in the next couple of weeks.
He won't play winter ball, but should be ready for the start of spring training. Just don't expect him to make the crack the roster this time around. "I think we’ll just watch him in spring training," Wren said of his 23-year-old outfielder. "I don’t think we have any preconceived ideas. He just needs to play. I think the likelihood is he’ll be in the minor leagues to start the season, but we’re not going to predetermine that in November."
 Derek Lowe-S- Braves Nov. 11 - 4:00 pm et

Braves general manager Frank Wren will look to field offers on their starting pitching depth.
"We're in a position where people know we have an excess in starting pitching," Wren said. There's little doubt that the Braves would like to move Derek Lowe, but the three years and $45 million remaining on his contract will be awful tough to move. They'll likely pursue a trade where they can find a corner outfielder with power.

 Javier Vazquez-S- Braves Nov. 9 - 10:26 pm et

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the Braves have discussed the possibility of signing Javier Vazquez to a contract extension.
Vazquez finished the 2009 season with a 15-10 record, 2.87 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP over 32 starts. He also tallied 238 strikeouts. It's not a surprise that the Braves would like to lock him up, but the 33-year-old right-hander holds all the negotiating power after such a fine season. They have him under control through 2010 and would be wise to let the upcoming season simply play out.
 Scott Proctor-R- Braves Nov. 7 - 1:44 pm et

David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the Braves could have RHP Scott Proctor for two seasons.
Proctor signed a "split-contract" with the Braves this week that will pay him a prorated portion of a $750,000 salary for any time he spends on the major league roster and $12,000 for each month he spends in the minors. According to the terms of his contract, unless he spends nearly the entire 2010 season -- all but three weeks -- on the major league roster, he won't be eligible for free agency until after the 2011 season. Proctor, 32, was released by the Marlins last month after undergoing Tommy John surgery in May.
 Scott Proctor-R- Braves Nov. 6 - 4:32 pm et

Braves signed Scott Proctor to a one-year, $750,000 contract.
Proctor must remain in the major leagues to earn the money -- he'll be given a smaller prorated sum if demoted. The deal also has up to $250,000 worth of performance-based incentives, which feels like a perfect contract for the Braves since he's coming off Tommy John elbow surgery.
 Scott Proctor-R- Braves Nov. 5 - 9:36 am et

David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the Braves have signed Scott Proctor.
According to O'Brien, Proctor signed a "split-contract," meaning that he'll receive less money for any portion of the season spent in the minor leagues. Because of the World Series, the team has yet to confirm the signing. Proctor missed the entire 2009 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in May. The 32-year-old right-hander was released by the Marlins in October, but the Braves hope he can be a contributor in 2010.

 John Halama-R- Braves Nov. 4 - 7:58 pm et

According to Jordan Bastain of MLB.com, the Blue Jays will watch John Halama pitch in the Dominican Republic on Thursday.
Halama hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2006 with the Orioles and has a 4.65 career ERA anyhow, so Bastain isn't sure about their level of interest in the 37-year-old southpaw. Halama was signed to a minor league contract by the Braves in June, finishing 4-7 with a 4.48 ERA in 16 appearances (13 starts) with Triple-A Gwinnett.

 Tim Hudson-S- Braves Nov. 4 - 11:27 am et

Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports that Tim Hudson "has passed his physical and essentially made his three-year contract extension a done deal."
Atlanta may wait until after the World Series to officially announce the three-year extension, but the two sides worked out a deal last week and merely had to "find a doctor that the insurance company would approve." He'll reportedly receive around $9 million per season.
 Tim Hudson-S- Braves Oct. 29 - 8:57 am et

According to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Tim Hudson is expected to sign a three-year contract extension with the Braves by early next week.
O'Brien reports the two sides have have made rapid progress on an extension that will pay Hudson roughly $9 million per season, a rather significant "hometown discount" during a weak free-agent market for starting pitchers. With Hudson locked up, the Braves can turn their focus to cashing in on their starting pitching surplus.
