Jason Bay-OF- Red Sox Nov. 21 - 9:15 am et

The Red Sox are "looking hard at alternatives" for Jason Bay, reports Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated.
It's been known for a while now that Jason Bay has rejected a four-year, $60 million contract from the Red Sox, preferring to test free agency instead. The Red Sox have been linked to Matt Holliday, but they've seemingly been linked to everyone by this point. Bay will likely sign for a deal greater than the one he rejected, but it won't be by much.
Robert Manuel-R- Red Sox Nov. 20 - 5:10 pm et

Red Sox claimed RHP Robert Manuel off waivers from the Mariners.
Maneul, 26, posted a 2.88 ERA and 49/16 K/BB ratio in 65 2/3 innings this season at the Triple-A level. His numbers are strong, but he has sub-par stuff and may be destined for a career in middle relief.
Jason Bay-OF- Red Sox Nov. 20 - 10:17 am et

Angels owner Arte Moreno indicated Thursday that the Angels will pursue free agent outfielder Jason Bay this winter.
Moreno told local media members that he's intrigued by Bay's "great bat and great makeup." The 31-year-old should come at a cheaper price than Matt Holliday and seems like a fine fit in Anaheim, where a spot has opened via the expected departure of Vladimir Guerrero. Bay hit .267/.384/.537 in 2009 with 36 home runs, 119 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 531 at-bats.

Jason Bay-OF- Red Sox Nov. 19 - 8:19 pm et

Red Sox team president Larry Lucchino acknowledged Thursday that the Red Sox badly want to re-sign outfielder Jason Bay.
"Very much so," Lucchino said at an event honoring owner John Henry. "We’d love to have him back. He’s in many ways the personification of a player we want here." Boston's exclusive negotiating period with Bay runs out Friday. He's expected to hit the open market and will receive plenty of interest.

David Ortiz-DH- Red Sox Nov. 19 - 7:55 pm et

David Ortiz is working hard on his fitness level this offseason in the hopes of avoiding another slow start.
Ortiz hit just .222/.317/.416 before the All-Star break this past season and didn't have a home run until late May. Boston GM Terry Francona checked in on him this week and was impressed. "He looks good. He's following through with a really good start to his offseason," said Epstein. He's lost some weight and he's in really good shape, so that's a good sign."
David Ortiz-DH- Red Sox Nov. 19 - 1:32 pm et

During an appearance to promote an upcoming charity event, David Ortiz said the Red Sox need another power bat.
"I say that like a year ago and everybody looked at me like I was a (expletive) clown. I say, ‘We need another 30 home run hitting guy.’ ‘What, you crazy!’ Everybody talking trash. Now what?" Ortiz said. "Everybody will always welcome a 30 home run hitting player. Every time, every situation. You want to compete with those guys across the street you better bring it, period." General manager Theo Epstein will attempt to re-sign Jason Bay, but are also expected to pursue Adrian Gonzalez to play first base.

Jason Bay-OF- Red Sox Nov. 19 - 11:47 am et

Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that Jason Bay rejected a four-year contract offer from the Red Sox.
Boston's offer was believed to be around $60 million, according to sources. "It's not a surprise that a player that's gone this far wants to see what's out there," said general manager Theo Epstein. Bay, 31, will hit the free agent market for the first time in his career on Friday. He is one of the top three free agents available and will take his chances of earning more on the open market.

Jason Bay-OF- Red Sox Nov. 18 - 5:10 pm et

Manager Terry Francona would like to see Jason Bay back in Boston next season.
"He has earned the right to be a free agent. This is his first time and he wants to see it through," Francona said during an hour-long appearance on WEEI in Boston. "You know we're going to be a major player -- we always are. Do I hope it gets done? Yeah. I bet you Jason Bay hopes it gets done, but he's going to have other options, too." Boston's exclusive negotiating window with Bay comes to a close on Friday, but there's a pretty good chance he stays put.

Mike Lowell-3B- Red Sox Nov. 18 - 2:50 pm et

Mike Lowell isn't fazed with being the subject of trade rumors.
"I figure I am no stranger to trade rumors and I understand the team’s desire to always look to upgrade," Lowell said in an e-mail. "This situation is much different than last year because I was hoping to avoid a very awkward situation of rehabbing in order to get traded if the Teixiera signing would have occurred." Lowell, who has one year and $12 million remaining on his contract, will become expendable if the Red Sox are able to add a big bat like Adrian Gonzalez. With a hip injury and the addition of Victor Martinez, the 35-year-old third baseman was used sparingly down the stretch, finishing with a .290/.337/.474 slash-line to go along with 17 homers and 75 RBI.
Fernando Cabrera-R- Red Sox Nov. 18 - 10:37 am et

Fernando Cabrera has opted for free agency rather than accept an outright assignment to Triple-A Pawtucket.
The 28-year-old righty posted a 1.71 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 52 2/3 innings this season as Triple-A Pawtucket's closer. He has a 5.12 career ERA on the major league level, but is likely to draw some interest on the open market.
Jason Bay-OF- Red Sox Nov. 18 - 9:04 am et

Cardinals GM John Mozeliak indicated Tuesday that the Cardinals will not purse outfielder Jason Bay, even if they miss out on Matt Holliday.
"We'll see how the market develops," Mozeliak said. "Is (Bay) a possibility? Sure. But right now it's fair to say he's not one of our top priorities." The Cardinals are reportedly intrigued by free agent Xavier Nady and would rather spend major cash on bolstering their infield and starting rotation if Matt Holliday moves on. Bay is drawing heavy interest from the Red Sox and Mets.

Billy Wagner-R- Red Sox Nov. 16 - 8:38 pm et

According to FOXSports.com, free agent reliever Billy Wagner has already drawn interest from eight teams this offseason.
Wagner's agent, Bean Stringfellow, was kind enough to name five of the interested clubs: the Red Sox, Braves, Nationals, Astros, and Orioles. All make sense for the 38-year-old left-hander, who posted a 1.72 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 26/8 K/BB ratio in 15 2/3 innings during the 2009 season.
Jed Lowrie-SS- Red Sox Nov. 15 - 10:10 am et

Peter Gammons of ESPN.com reports the Red Sox want Jed Lowrie to play at Triple-A Pawtucket in 2010.
Lowrie missed most of the 2009 season after undergoing wrist surgery in April. Right now, he's technically the top shortstop on the depth chart, but that figures to change. Giving him full-time duty in Pawtucket would help Lowrie recapture his groove in a less demanding environment. Wait to see how the shortstop situation shakes itself out before dropping him on draft boards.

Ryan Westmoreland-OF- Red Sox Nov. 13 - 6:28 pm et

Red Sox prospect Ryan Westmoreland is recovering well after surgery on his broken collarbone.
Westmoreland suffered the injury making a dramatic catch in August and underwent surgery in September. He should be ready for the start of spring training. "He's doing great," said Red Sox director of player development, Mike Hazen. "He has no pain and his range of motion is back 100 percent. Everything went really well and we have no concerns right now physically." The 19-year-old outfielder batted .296/.401/.484 with seven homers, 35 RBI and 19 stolen bases in 60 games for Single-A Lowell before suffering the injury. He was recently named the organization's top prospect by Baseball Prospectus. The 2008 fifth-round pick should begin next season with Single-A Greenville.
Alex Gonzalez-SS- Red Sox Nov. 12 - 5:47 pm et

FOXSports.com cites major league sources who say that the Nationals are interested in Adam Everett or Alex Gonzalez to play shortstop.
So much for Ian Desmond. According to the report, the Nationals plan to move Cristian Guzman to second base while giving Desmond more time at Triple-A. Everett and Gonzalez can certainly pick it at short, so they'd be a considerable improvement over Guzman. The Red Sox wisely declined Gonzalez's $6 million option for 2010, but haven't ruled out bringing him back.
Daisuke Matsuzaka-S- Red Sox Nov. 12 - 4:37 pm et

Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reports that Daisuke Matsuzaka is set to embark on an offseason conditioning program.
Abraham cites Gaku Tashiro of Sankei Sports, who says that Matsuzaka will soon leave for Japan. Upon his return to the United States in December, he is expected to take up residence in Arizona and work out at the Athletes' Performance Institute in Phoenix, Az. "It is not decided that I will be doing that in Arizona. But the facility seems to be an environment where I can really concentrate on my program," Matsuzaka said. "(Dustin) Pedoria was the one that introduced me." General manager Theo Epstein and the Red Sox have made Dice-K's offseason conditioning a top priority during the offseason, as he missed nearly three months in 2009 due to a right shoulder problem.
Jason Varitek-C- Red Sox Nov. 12 - 2:14 pm et

Jason Varitek exercised his $3 million option to remain with the Red Sox.
Varitek could earn up to $2 million in additional incentives based on playing time, but since Victor Martinez is expected to be the full-time catcher in 2010, he is unlikely to meet the appropriate criteria. The 37-year-old backstop batted just .209/.313/.390 with 14 home runs and 51 RBI in 2009 and would have been hard-pressed to find a better deal on the open market. At the very least, he'll be Josh Beckett's personal catcher.
Jason Varitek-C- Red Sox Nov. 11 - 4:50 pm et

According to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe, Jason Varitek has exercised his $3 million player option to remain with the Red Sox in 2010.
After much deliberation, Varitek has decided to stay in Boston. With a .209/.313/.390 line, including a .157/.250/.239 showing after the All-Star break, it would have been very difficult for him to find a better deal on the open market. Now he'll be one of the highest paid backup catchers around.
Jason Varitek-C- Red Sox Nov. 11 - 10:35 am et

Jason Varitek has until midnight Wednesday to decide whether he wants to exercise his $3 million player option for 2010.
It's not clear what the hold-up is. Varitek may be searching for a starting job, but he isn't likely to find one and definitely won't be able to obtain the kind of salary the Red Sox must pay him in 2010. The 37-year-old hit just .209/313/.390 this season and .157/.250/.239 after the All-Star break.
Billy Wagner-R- Red Sox Nov. 11 - 9:48 am et

Billy Wagner's agent, Bean Stringfellow, said Tuesday that his client hasn't ruled out accepting an offer of arbitration from the Red Sox.
"I just visited with Billy and his family the other day," said Stringfellow, "and I can tell you this much: Billy thoroughly enjoyed his time in Boston. It was one of the best experiences he has ever had in baseball." The 38-year-old left-hander was thought to have interest in a full-time closing gig. And with teams desperate for that kind of help, it's doubtful he lands back in Boston.
