 Curtis Granderson-OF- Tigers Nov. 21 - 9:02 am et

Phil Rogers says that many in the Cubs front office feel it would be "foolish" to trade prospect Starlin Castro to Detroit for Curtis Granderson.
Castro has quickly established himself as the best Cubs prospect after his showing in the Arizona Fall League. Granderson, conversely, has been one of the best centerfielders in the game (against right-handed pitching) and is thought to be available. Rogers, who writes for the Chicago Tribune, says that Cubs GM Jim Hendry "appreciates" what Granderson brings to the table and wonders if new hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo could help address Granderson's platoon issues. If the Cubs won't give Castro up in a Granderson deal, it will be extremely tough to pull off.

 Scott Sizemore-2B- Tigers Nov. 20 - 2:13 pm et

Tigers purchased the contracts of 2B Scott Sizemore, SS Audy Ciriaco, 1B/OF Ryan Strieby and OF Brennan Boesch.
The four players are now on Detroit's 40-man roster and subsequently protected from the Rule 5 Draft. Sizemore, 24, underwent surgery in October to repair his left ankle but should be fine for the start of spring training. He'll get a shot to compete for the 2010 starting second base gig as long as the Tigers don't do something unexpected this winter on the free agent market.
 Edwin Jackson-S- Tigers Nov. 20 - 11:35 am et

According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, the Mariners are in talks with the Tigers about a trade involving right-hander Edwin Jackson.
Jackson went 13-9 this season with a 3.62 ERA and 1.26 WHIP over 33 starts. He'd be a great addition to any rotation and especially in the spacious confines of Safeco Field. He made $2.3 million in 2009 via salary arbitration and, as Heyman points out, is due for a substantial raise.

 Adam Everett-SS- Tigers Nov. 20 - 8:56 am et

According to Lynn Henning of the Detroit News, the Tigers will make an effort to re-sign shortstop Adam Everett this winter.
Everett, 32, hit a lousy .238/.288/.325 in 2009, but the Tigers were greatly impressed with his defense at the shortstop position. The lack of offense, for what it's worth, should leave him in Detroit's price range. The Tigers are struggling financially but can surely afford an inexpensive, defensive-minded shortstop. He's drawn little-to-no public interest thus far.
 Curtis Granderson-OF- Tigers Nov. 18 - 4:24 pm et

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski has downplayed talk of a possible fire sale.
"To me, you're always in position where you listen to what people have to say," Dombrowski told the Detroit News. "I don't know what we're going to do at this point. These are just conversations at the moment." He continued, "If we make any trades, I would assure you that we will make a trade because we think it's a good trade for us. But if we make any trades -- and that's if -- we'll settle on a situation that makes sense. ... It will not be done to move a salary." Dombrowski made the same proclamation last week, but that hasn't stopped the rumor-mongering.
 Jarrod Washburn-S- Tigers Nov. 18 - 1:29 pm et

According to FOXSports.com, Jarrod Washburn senses "mutual interest" in a possible return to the Mariners.
"Not saying it will happen, but I know I enjoyed my time there, my wife and kids loved it there, and I think they have some interest," said Washburn. "So, I see that as a possibility." The 35-year-old southpaw was 31-49 with a 4.17 ERA in parts of four seasons in Seattle, but was 8-6 with a 2.64 ERA in 2009 before getting dealt to the Tigers at the trade deadline. Washburn could also see the Twins and Brewers as a potential fit since they are close to his offseason home in Wisconsin.

 Brandon Lyon-R- Tigers Nov. 16 - 11:58 am et

Buster Olney of ESPN.com writes that Brandon Lyon's agent Barry Meister expects the pitcher to get a multi-year contract.
Lyon is open to being a set-up man again, which would make him attractive to the Phillies and Angels, as Olney suggests. The 30-year-old right-hander had a 6.43 ERA at the end of May, but posted a 1.56 ERA from June 1 on, finishing the season with a very respectable 2.86 ERA.
 Justin Verlander-S- Tigers Nov. 14 - 8:14 am et

General manager Dave Dombrowski said that the team "would like to have Justin [Verlander] in the organization for a long time."
Verlander is coming off a 19-win season with a 3.45 ERA as a 26-year old. He's entering his second year of arbitration and is in line for a nice bump in salary, having made $3.75 million in 2009. Despite reported payroll slashing, the team has over $50 million coming off the books in 2010, which can then be re-invested. Whatever contract Verlander signs is sure to approach a total package of $100 million.

 Jarrod Washburn-S- Tigers Nov. 13 - 8:43 pm et

The Tigers will not pursue Jarrod Washburn or Aubrey Huff as free agents.
"We called both Jarrod and Aubrey this week and told them we will not be pursuing them," general manager Dave Dombrowski said. "We wished them well." Washburn posted a 7.33 ERA in eight starts after coming over from the Mariners in July while Huff was equally futile, batting just .189/.265/.302 with two home runs and 13 RBI in 40 games after being acquired from the Orioles in August. The Tigers aim to cut payroll this offseason, so neither were expected to return.

 Curtis Granderson-OF- Tigers Nov. 13 - 3:38 pm et

According to Steve Kornacki of MLive.com, a Curtis Granderson trade is "unlikely to happen" this winter.
Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski suggested the same thing Wednesday, yet rumors are still streaming in from all over involving some of the Tigers' bigger stars. "My personal feeling is that Detroit is not going to trade Curtis Granderson," an unnamed American League executive said Friday. "He’s like (Cleveland’s) Grady Sizemore. They don’t come along very often and Detroit is blessed to have him."

 Jarrod Washburn-S- Tigers Nov. 13 - 9:02 am et

The Twins are expected to pursue free agent left-hander Jarrod Washburn, according to Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.
Washburn underwent arthroscopic surgery in late October but is already feeling better, according to his agent, Scott Boras. He posted a disappointing 1-3 record and a 7.33 ERA during his late-season tenure with the Tigers in '09, but had a 3.78 ERA and 1.19 WHIP overall. The southpaw makes his home in Webster, Wisconsin, about two hours from the Twin Cities.

 Placido Polanco-2B- Tigers Nov. 12 - 10:21 am et

Jim Salisbury of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. is interested in Placido Polanco to play third base.
Polanco, Mark DeRosa and Adrian Beltre are at the top of his wish list, according to the report. Polanco, 34, just won a Gold Glove in the American League for his play at second base, but hasn't played at third base since 2005. Salisbury writes that he is willing to move to third base as long as he plays for a contending team. Polanco played with the Phillies from 2002 to 2005.

 Curtis Granderson-OF- Tigers Nov. 11 - 7:25 pm et

The Tigers are "not having a fire sale," according to team president/general manager Dave Dombrowski.
Dombrowski moved quickly to shoot down speculation that a fire sale was coming. Rumors have swirled that Curtis Granderson and Edwin Jackson could be available. The Tigers won't force anything, but it's a safe assumption that they will listen to ideas.

 Curtis Granderson-OF- Tigers Nov. 11 - 2:50 pm et

Joel Sherman of the New York Post cites a National League executive who says that the Tigers have let other teams know that Curtis Granderson is available "for the right package."
Granderson would surely have many suitors, with the Yankees near the top of the list, according to Sherman. The 28-year-old outfielder batted .249/.327/.453 with 30 home runs, 71 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 2009, but struggles notoriously against left-handed pitching. Still, he is very solid in the field and would give the Yankees an alternative to Johnny Damon. Granderson is owed $25.75 million over the next three seasons, with a $13 million club option for 2013.
 Fernando Rodney-R- Tigers Nov. 11 - 9:28 am et

The Phillies have shown "preliminary interest" in free agent closer Fernando Rodney, according to FOXSports.com.
Rodney, 32, converted 37 of 38 save chances with the Tigers last season despite a dismal 4.40 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. Detroit is in cost-cutting mode and probably won't be able to afford his demands while Philly is looking to bolster their shaky bullpen. Rodney shouldn't be treated as a closer this winter and may find it hard to hide his uglier stats behind his saves total.

 Gerald Laird-C- Tigers Nov. 11 - 9:05 am et

According to FOXSports.com, the Tigers are open to listening to offers this winter for catcher Gerald Laird.
The Tigers are faced with a payroll that doesn't match their revenue base and are looking to dump some salary. Laird hit .225/.306/.320 in 413 at-bats last season while earning $2.8 million. He's expected to land closer to $4 million for the upcoming season through salary arbitration.
 Edwin Jackson-S- Tigers Nov. 10 - 8:21 pm et

According to FOXSports.com, the Tigers may be open to trading right-hander Edwin Jackson this winter.
Jackson finished the '09 season with a 13-9 record and a 3.62 ERA over 33 starts. But the Tigers are facing a serious payroll crunch and would like to unload one or two of their established players for some young, cheap talent. "We're all aware that the economy is not the same all over the country," said Detroit GM Dave Dombrowski. "We've been hit hard in our area."
 Matt Treanor-C- Tigers Nov. 6 - 5:55 pm et

Tigers released catcher Matt Treanor.
Treanor had no hits and four strikeouts in 13 at-bats this season while battling a hip injury. Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski said he may attempt to re-sign the 33-year-old this winter to serve as the team's No. 2 catcher in 2010.
 Marcus Thames-DH- Tigers Nov. 6 - 5:51 pm et

Tigers released outfielder Marcus Thames.
Thames spent his last six seasons with the Tigers, belting a home run per every 14.78 at-bats. He hit just .252/.323/.453 this season, but blasted 13 homers and collected 36 RBI in 258 at-bats. He's an awful defensive outfielder, but that kind of power should land him a deal.
 Fernando Rodney-R- Tigers Nov. 6 - 9:35 am et

Free agent reliever Fernando Rodney said Thursday that he's hoping to return to the Tigers next season.
"I want to come back to the Tigers," Rodney said. "Detroit is the first team I will talk to." Of course, that doesn't mean a deal will get done. He's seeking a three or four-year deal and Detroit already has a budget-stretching payroll. Rodney accumulated 37 saves this season despite a 4.40 ERA.
