 Nick Johnson-1B- Marlins Nov. 21 - 8:26 am et

The Giants may be interested in first baseman Nick Johnson.
Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle notes that Johnson is "loved" by manager Bruce Bochy and would fit GM Brian Sabean's philosophy of chasing after "second-tier" free agents interested in playing by the bay. Johnson's plate discipline (99 walks in 2009) would be a welcome addition to the team.

 Josh Johnson-S- Marlins Nov. 20 - 7:12 pm et

Josh Johnson and the Marlins have reached an "impasse" on contract talks, leaving the chances of a multi-year agreement in doubt.
"Based on our conversations, there's no chance of doing a long-term deal with the Marlins," Johnson's agent Matt Sosnick said. "We made it clear that it was going to be this year or it wasn't going to happen. It was now or never. And the Marlins agreed." According to Sosnick, the Marlins weren't comfortable offering anything more than a three-year deal. Johnson, under team control through 2011, is due to make $4 million as an arbitration-eligible player next season.

 Jose Ceda-R- Marlins Nov. 20 - 3:40 pm et

Marlins purchased the contracts of RHP Jose Ceda, RHP Jay Buente, RHP Brett Sinkbeil, RHP Kris Harvey and OF Scott Cousins.
The players are now safe from MLB's Rule 5 Draft. Ceda missed most of 2008 and the entire 2009 season with a right shoulder injury, but the Marlins still believe in the 22-year-old's potential.
Paul Lo Duca-C- Marlins Nov. 20 - 9:34 am et

Paul Lo Duca told Sirius XM's Home Plate on Thursday that he still has a desire to play in the major leagues.
Lo Duca hasn't appeared in an MLB game since 2008, and hit just .243/.321/.295 in 173 at-bats that season. "I feel unbelievable," he said. "I’ve been hitting the last four or five days constantly and started my workouts... My heart’s into it and I want to go back in it full bore." He turns 38 years old next April and is doubtful to draw much interest from major league clubs.
 Ronny Paulino-C- Marlins Nov. 19 - 10:22 pm et

Ronny Paulino has garnered a good deal of trade interest this offseason, according to the Miami Herald.
Paulino, a righty, batted .272/.340/.423 with eight homers and 27 RBI this season in 239 at-bats while serving in a catching platoon with John Baker, a left-handed hitter. Of course, the Fish must first decide if they're comfortable going with Baker as their sole backstop before biting on a deal. He hit just .171/.310/.314 against southpaws in 2009.

 Ross Gload-1B- Marlins Nov. 19 - 10:09 pm et

According to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald, the Marlins have extended an offer to free agent utilityman Ross Gload.
The offer is thought to be similar to the two-year, $1.9 million contract Wes Helms inked last year. Gload, who turns 34 in April, hit .318 as a pinch-hitter this season and .261/.329/.400 overall. The Marlins declined to pick up his $2.6 million option for 2010 about two weeks ago.
 Dan Uggla-2B- Marlins Nov. 19 - 3:34 pm et

Jayson Stark of ESPN.com reports that trade talks for Dan Uggla got "pretty hot and heavy" at the GM meetings, with the Giants and Rangers being mentioned as potential landing spots.
We've heard Uggla linked to the Giants for a while now, but the Rangers are a new one. According to the report, if the Marlins don't get what they want in exchange for the 29-year-old slugger, they are open to dealing one of their other arbitration-eligible players -- a group that includes Jorge Cantu, Cody Ross, Alfredo Amezaga and Ricky Nolasco. Still, Uggla is the most likely among them to be dealt.

 Chris Coghlan-OF- Marlins Nov. 16 - 2:21 pm et

Chris Coghlan won the National League Rookie of the Year award.
This a mild surprise, because of the competition Coghlan had for the award. He beat out J.A. Happ, Tommy Hanson and Andrew McCutchen. Our ballot would have given preference to Happ and McCutchen. Regardless, Coghlan was excellent in his debut campaign, hitting .321/.390/.460 in 565 plate appearances with 84 runs scored, 31 doubles, and nine steals in 128 games.
 Dan Uggla-2B- Marlins Nov. 13 - 2:43 pm et

According to Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports, Dan Uggla does not want to move from second base, even in the event of a trade.
"There should be no reason to consider a position change at this time," said Uggla's agent, Jeff Borris. The Braves, Orioles and Giants are thought to have some interest in acquiring the 29-year-old slugger, but it sounds like he's only willing to play the position he's familiar with. It'll be interesting to hear if that factors into potential trade negotiations this winter.

 Dan Uggla-2B- Marlins Nov. 12 - 12:15 pm et

David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution writes that the idea of Dan Uggla in left field shouldn't be dismissed.
O'Brien goes on to call it a "legit possibility," despite Uggla not appearing in the outfield since the 2004 season when he was playing for Double-A El Paso in the Diamondbacks organization. Uggla could be one possibility for the Braves as they look to find a corner outfield bat. The 29-year-old has eclipsed 30 homers in each of the past three seasons.

 Dan Uggla-2B- Marlins Nov. 11 - 2:40 pm et

FOXSports.com reports that the Orioles and Giants have shown the most interest in Dan Uggla.
The Red Sox have even considered Uggla as a potential alternative to Jason Bay in left field, although he hasn't played in the outfield since the 2004 season in Double-A. Uggla, 30, figures to play third base should he be acquired by the Orioles or Giants, according to the report, but they would be taking quite a leap of faith considering his defense. He should make roughly $8 million in arbitration this winter.

 Hayden Penn-R- Marlins Nov. 10 - 2:50 pm et

Marlins purchased the contract of RHP Hayden Penn.
The move prevents Penn from becoming a minor league free agent. Penn, who was acquired from the Orioles last spring, had a 7.77 ERA in 22 innings before the Marlins dropped him from the roster in June. The Marlins decided it was worth taking one more look at him next spring before giving up on him.
 Cameron Maybin-OF- Marlins Nov. 9 - 6:13 pm et

Cameron Maybin underwent successful shoulder surgery on Monday.
The procedure repaired a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder. Maybin, 22, is expected to be fine by the start of spring training and will, in all likelihood, open the 2010 season as the Marlins' starting center fielder.
 Dan Uggla-2B- Marlins Nov. 9 - 5:43 pm et

According to Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post, "Indications are 2B Dan Uggla will get traded by the winter meetings next month."
The Marlins are plenty happy with Uggla's production -- he's hit 30-plus homers in each of the last three seasons -- but they don't have the funds to sign him to a long-term extension and really can't afford the salary he's granted through arbitration. He was awarded $5.35 million in 2009.
 Hanley Ramirez-SS- Marlins Nov. 8 - 9:01 am et

The Marlins plan to have a 2010 payroll of $36 million.
Or just $4 million more than the Yankees will pay A-Rod alone. With a payroll of $36.8 million in 2009, the Marlins have some maneuvering to do if they hope to hit their target. They struck earlier this week, shedding about $3 million in potential salary by dealing Jeremy Hermida. Other candidates to exit stage left are Dan Uggla, Jorge Cantu and a bevy of middle relievers.

 Ross Gload-1B- Marlins Nov. 7 - 10:03 am et

Marlins declined 1B Ross Gload's $2.6 million club option for 2010.
Gload impressed as a pinch-hitter and hit a cumulative .261/.329/.400 in 230 at-bats. The club option is too pricey for a bench player on the Marlins roster, but the 33-year-old is certain to land another job somewhere in the National League. He was a plus defensive outfielder in 2009.

 Cameron Maybin-OF- Marlins Nov. 6 - 6:11 pm et

Cameron Maybin is scheduled to undergo surgery this weekend to repair a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder.
Maybin first began experiencing discomfort in his shoulder in late August but was able to play through the pain. He finished the season strong, going 22-for-78 in September and 5-for-14 in October, and is expected to open the 2010 season as the Marlins' starting center fielder. The procedure is fairly minor and should not deter those plans whatsoever.
 Hunter Jones-R- Marlins Nov. 5 - 6:03 pm et

Marlins acquired LHP Hunter Jones and LHP Jose Alvarez from the Red Sox for outfielder Jeremy Hermida.
Jones, 25, gave up 13 runs in 12 1/2 innings for Boston this season. He might be useful as one of the final relievers in the Florida bullpen, but he has little in the way of upside. Alvarez, 20, was demoted from the Sally League in 2008 to the short-season New York-Penn League last season, but he responded with a 1.52 ERA in 12 starts and two relief appearances. He probably doesn't have a future as a starter, but he's not without promise.

 Josh Johnson-S- Marlins Oct. 27 - 12:04 pm et

Marlins hired Randy St. Claire as pitching coach.
St. Claire spent seven seasons as pitching coach for the Expos/Nationals before being fired on June 1 and will get a lot more talent to work with in Florida. Bryan Price was the Marlins' first choice, but opted to join the Reds instead.
 Bryan Petersen-OF- Marlins Oct. 15 - 3:34 am et

Bryan Petersen homered and doubled twice Wednesday in his first game for Mesa of the AFL.
That's a promising start. The Marlins had to be hoping for a little more power from Petersen this year after he hit 23 homers in three stops in 2008. He ended up at .297/.368/.413 with seven homers in 431 at-bats for Double-A Jacksonville. It doesn't look like he'll have the bat to make it as a corner outfielder, and he's unlikely to ever play center in Florida with Cameron Maybin set to run away with the job. He might turn out to be a pretty good fourth outfielder.
