 LaTroy Hawkins-R- Astros Nov. 19 - 4:26 pm et

The Astros have an offer on the table for LaTroy Hawkins, reports Brian McTaggart of MLB.com.
Out of Houston's notable free agents, including Miguel Tejada and Jose Valverde, general manager Ed Wade has shown the most interest in retaining Hawkins. The 36-year-old right-hander posted a 2.13 ERA and 11 saves out out of the pen in 2009, but he'll probably test the free agent waters before considering a return to Houston.

 Miguel Tejada-SS- Astros Nov. 17 - 2:44 pm et

General manager Ed Wade is open to bringing back Miguel Tejada next season.
"Everybody is aware Miggy is a free agent and that's 199 hits and a guy who did a really super job for us and a two-time All-Star [with the Astros]," said general manager Ed Wade. "We're not prepared to close any doors with Miggy." Tejada, 35, batted .313/.340/.455 with 14 homers and 86 RBI in 2009, but would likely need to take a significant paycut to return. Tejada was one of the worst fielding shortstops in the majors last season according to UZR, so a move to third base should be in his future.

 Jose Valverde-R- Astros Nov. 14 - 5:41 pm et

According to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com, Jose Valverde is eager to test the free agent waters.
"The Astros have communicated to Jose their desire to bring him back," Valverde's agent Gene Mato wrote in an email to MLB.com. "He really enjoyed his time there and is open to the idea of returning. With that said, he is intrigued with the whole free agency process and the interest that is being generated." Valverde, 31, posted a 2.33 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 25 saves in 29 opportunities for the Astros in 2009 and figures to be the top closer on the market. He earned $8 million in 2009.

 Carlos Lee-OF- Astros Nov. 11 - 3:30 pm et

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that Carlos Lee is not a candidate to be traded.
"He is going to be our left fielder," said Astros general manager Ed Wade. "He has a complete no-trade clause and he has made it very, very clear that he does not want to go anywhere." Wade acknowledged that his payroll will need to "go south," just don't expect them to shed Lee, who has three years and $55.5 million remaining on his contract.
 Jason Castro-C- Astros Nov. 8 - 1:13 pm et

The Astros have sent catching prospect Jason Castro home from the Arizona Fall League for precautionary reasons.
The 'Stros are worried about over-working the 22-year-old, who is expected to compete for the starting catching gig in 2010. He hit .300/.380/.446 with 10 home runs and 73 RBI on two different minor league levels this season but batted just .143/.260/.214 in 42 AFL at-bats.
 Roy Oswalt-S- Astros Oct. 30 - 6:49 pm et

Astros named Brad Arnsberg pitching coach, Al Pedrique bench coach and Bobby Meacham first-base coach.
If the Astros had many young pitchers worth worrying about, we'd be more critical of the Arnsberg hiring. His track record when it comes to injuries, both in Florida and Toronto, is horrible. Pitchers seem to like him, though, and the Astros don't have many talented young arms to burn out. Pedrique, the Astros' third-base coach for a time last year, was one of the candidates for the managerial vacancy before Brad Mills was hired.
 Geoff Blum-3B- Astros Oct. 30 - 6:45 pm et

The Houston Chronicle reports that the Astros re-signed Geoff Blum to a one-year, $1.5 million deal with a $1.65 million option for 2011.
The money is modest enough that it's not worth complaining about. Still, Blum is a very limited player now that he's 36. He's a weak option at shortstop or second base these days, and he doesn't hit enough to serve as a regular third baseman. If the Astros finally go get themselves a real third baseman, Blum won't do much good or harm in a backup role. If he's miscast as a starting third baseman against right-handers again, then Ed Wade will have had an awful winter.
 Doug Brocail-R- Astros Oct. 30 - 2:58 pm et

Astros declined RHP Doug Brocail's $2.85 million option for 2010.
Houston will give him a $250,000 buyout instead, making the 42-year-old right-hander a free agent. Brocail was very effective in 2008, but missed most of this season with hamstring and shoulder injuries, posting a 4.58 ERA and 9/13 K/BB ratio in 17 2/3 innings. He should be able to land a middle relief gig somewhere, but may opt for retirement rather than a minor league deal.
 Chris Coste-C- Astros Oct. 28 - 8:48 am et

Chris Coste has refused an outright assignment to Triple-A Round Rock and is now a free agent.
Coste, now 36, hit .224/.301/.317 in 2009 with two home runs and 18 RBI in 88 games between Philadelphia and Houston. He may get lucky and find work with a team in desperate need of a backup catcher.
 Lance Berkman-1B- Astros Oct. 27 - 1:54 pm et

Alyson Footer of MLB.com reports that the Astros have hired Red Sox bench coach Brad Mills as their new manager.
Houston offered the job to Manny Acta before he decided to go to Cleveland instead, and the other finalists were said to be interim manager Dave Clark and former manager Phil Garner. A former big league infielder who played with the Expos from 1980-1983, Mills spent over a decade managing in the minors before joining the Red Sox's staff in 2004. His son, Beau Mills, was the Indians' first-round pick in 2007.
 Lance Berkman-1B- Astros Oct. 27 - 10:12 am et

Red Sox bench coach Brad Mills will have a third interview with the Astros on Tuesday.
Mills is scheduled to meet with owner Drayton McLane Jr., general manager Ed Wade and other club officials. Interim manager Dave Clark and former Astros manager Phil Garner are also being considered for the job after Manny Acta spurned them for Cleveland. The Astros are expected to name a new manager by the end of the week.

 Jason Bourgeois-OF- Astros Oct. 26 - 2:12 pm et

Astros claimed outfielder Jason Bourgeois off waivers from the Brewers.
A speedy 27-year-old outfielder who's seen minimal time in the majors during stints with the Brewers and White Sox, Bourgeois hit .316/.354/.401 with two homers and 36 steals in 105 games at Triple-A this season. He'll compete for a bench job if he sticks with the Astros all offseason.

 Lance Berkman-1B- Astros Oct. 26 - 9:15 am et

Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports that Manny Acta turned down an offer to manage the Astros.
Acta was hired by the Indians on Sunday. The Astros reportedly offered him two years with an one-year option, while the Indians gave him three years plus an option. With Acta no longer an option, Red Sox bench coach Brad Mills and former Astros manager Phil Garner have become the favorites for the position.

 Lance Berkman-1B- Astros Oct. 21 - 11:06 pm et

Mark Berman of FOX26 in Houston reports that the Astros have narrowed their focus to four candidates to fill their managerial vacancy.
According to the report, the four finalists are former Nationals manager Manny Acta, Red Sox bench coach Brad Mills, former Astros manager Phil Garner and interim manager Dave Clark. Ten candidates were considered in the first round of interviews. Acta and Mills returned for second interviews on Wednesday.

 Lance Berkman-1B- Astros Oct. 21 - 8:20 pm et

According to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com, former Nationals manager Manny Acta and Red Sox bench coach Brad Mills interviewed for a second time with the Astros on Wednesday.
Acta and Mills were two of the ten candidates under consideration during a first-round of interviews that came to an end on Monday. No word on who else might return to Houston for a second interview. General manager Ed Wade confirmed that Acta met with the front office, including owner Drayton McLane. Acta interviewed for the Indians' job on Tuesday.

 Carlos Lee-OF- Astros Oct. 19 - 9:54 am et

Alyson Footer of MLB.com reports that Red Sox bench coach Brad Mills and first base coach Tim Bogar will interview for the Astros' vacant managerial position on Monday.
Mills and Bogar will wrap up the first round of interviews for the job. According to Footer, the second round of job interviews could begin as soon as later this week. The process is moving quickly, however if Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin is a finalist, and his team advances to the World Series, it may impact the timetable to make a decision.

 Lance Berkman-1B- Astros Oct. 17 - 6:27 pm et

Former Astros manager Phil Garner was interviewed Saturday afternoon for the club's open managing position.
The Astros fired Garner in August of 2007, but are apparently willing to give him another shot. "This is a different scenario now," he said Saturday. "That's why I decided to put my name in the hat and see if there's a fit here." Garner is the seventh of 10 candidates to interview for the gig.
 Lance Berkman-1B- Astros Oct. 16 - 5:20 pm et

Former Mariners and Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin interviewed to be manager of the Astros on Friday.
Melvin was let go by the D'Backs earlier this year and they didn't improve much from there, going 58-75 after his departure. He is touting his experience and his ability to take on a team in transition such as the Astros, as he had taken a transitional Arizona club to the 2007 NLCS. The Astros would be quite a project to add to his resume, but Melvin is considered one of the leaders in a group that includes Phil Garner, Pete Mackanin and former Nationals skipper Manny Acta.
 Lance Berkman-1B- Astros Oct. 15 - 4:03 pm et

Former Brewers manager Ned Yost was interviewed for the Astros' managing vacancy on Thursday afternoon.
The Astros are expected to interview at least 10 candidates for the gig. Yost, 54, boasts a ton of experience and played up that fact in a chat with the media soon after his 2 1/2-hour interview. "I don't think there's any substitute for experience," he said. "I think I learned a ton of great lessons being 12 years with Bobby Cox, and I learned a ton of great lessons the last six years with the Milwaukee Brewers. I think that it only helps."
 Aaron Boone-1B- Astros Oct. 14 - 11:06 am et

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, 36-year-old infielder Aaron Boone is likely to announce his retirement this winter.
Boone made a brave return just five months after open-heart surgery this season, but isn't much of a baseball player at this point in his career. He batted just .154 in 26 at-bats near the end of '09 while navigating the Astros' farm system and didn't manage a hit in 13 at-bats once promoted to the major league level. As it stands, he's a .263/.326/.425 career hitter with 126 home runs and 555 RBI over 12 seasons.
