 Danny Valencia-3B- Twins Nov. 20 - 5:37 pm et

Twins purchased the contracts of INFs Danny Valencia and Estarlin De Los Santos, and RHPs Deolis Guerra, Alex Burnett, Loek Van Mil and Rob Delaney.
The players are now on Minnesota's 40-man roster and are safe from selection in the Rule 5 Draft. Valencia, 25, could compete for the Twins' third base job this spring if they don't find a solution on the open market. He hit .286 in '09 with seven homers and 41 RBI in 71 games at Triple-A Rochester.
 Joe Crede-3B- Twins Nov. 19 - 10:34 am et

General manager Bill Smith said that Joe Crede is interested in returning to the Twins next season.
"His agent [Scott Boras] called shortly after the season and expressed [Crede's] interest in playing here," said Smith. "We're going to look at all options including Joe Crede and the young guys that we have. We'll try to make the best decision moving forward." Danny Valencia isn't quite ready for the majors, so if Smith exhausts the available free agent and trade options, a one-year incentive-laden contract for Crede might not be the worst thing.

 Carl Pavano-S- Twins Nov. 19 - 10:25 am et

Twins general manager Bill Smith is possibly interested in acquiring a veteran starting pitcher, reports Kelly Thesier of MLB.com.
"Ideally you'd love to have a veteran starter in there from day one," Smith told MLB.com. "We also think that the young pitchers that we have are all going to continue to get better as a group. If there is a fit with a veteran starting pitcher, we are very much open to that. Again, we've got depth but we would love to have a veteran guy that could come in and just calm things down once in a while." While the Twins have already expressed interest in bringing back Carl Pavano, they have also been connected to Jarrod Washburn, who has an offseason home in Wisconsin. Thesier doesn't rule out Rich Harden as a possibility, as the Twins put in a claim on him in August.

 Juan Morillo-R- Twins Nov. 16 - 8:55 am et

According to Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker, Juan Morillo has signed with with a Japanese team.
Newman doesn't have confirmation on the team, however the Hanshin Tigers had him on their wishlist. When the signing becomes official, it will open up a spot on Minnesota's 40-man roster, as Morillo was added last week. Morillo, 26, had a 22.50 ERA in just three appearances with the Twins in 2009, but went 6-6 with a 3.90 ERA and 1.60 WHIP in 46 games with Triple-A Rochester.

 Justin Huber-1B- Twins Nov. 14 - 12:39 pm et

Justin Huber is reportedly on his way to play for the Hiroshima Carp in Japan.
Huber was recently outrighted to Triple-A, but he'll instead pack his bags for Japan. Back in the day, the 27-year old was a decent catching/first base prospect. He hit .273/.355/.482 in 121 games for Rochester during the 2009 season and has been a solid Triple-A contributor for a few years now. It wouldn't surprise us to see Huber establish himself in Japan and return stateside in a few years.

 Joe Crede-3B- Twins Nov. 13 - 9:19 am et

According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the Twins may bring Joe Crede back this winter despite a disappointing 2009 season.
Crede was hampered by back issues throughout the season and only played 90 games. On top of that, he hit just .225/.289/.414 with 15 home runs and 48 RBI. But his agent, Scott Boras, is pitching the 31-year-old as a stopgap to the Twins' up-and-coming infield prospects. "The great thing about Joe is you're hiring on a one-year contract," Boras said Thursday. "It's not often you're going to get that level of a player to sign for one year."
 Joe Crede-3B- Twins Nov. 12 - 2:23 pm et

Jon Heyman of SI.com writes that the Orioles are considering Joe Crede to play third base.
Crede, 31, batted .225/.289/.414 with 15 home runs and 48 RBI in 90 games with the Twins this season. He recently underwent his third back procedure since 2007, and hasn't played a full season since 2006 with the White Sox. Crede insists that he will be ready for the start of spring training, but he probably won't do much better than an incentive-laden deal.

 Glen Perkins-S- Twins Nov. 12 - 11:29 am et

Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that Glen Perkins has dropped a service time grievance against the Twins this week.
At dispute was whether the Twins knowingly delayed his service time during his rehab from shoulder tendinitis, thus denying him arbitration. According to Christensen, the two sides reached a settlement this week, as the 26-year-old southpaw recouped some service time, however it was not enough for him to qualify for arbitration as a "Super Two."
 Joe Mauer-C- Twins Nov. 12 - 8:41 am et

Joe Mauer downplayed a report from the St. Paul Pioneer Press that he and the Twins have begun talks on a contract extension.
"Nothing new to report," said Mauer. "I've gotten a chance to start thinking about those things, but we really haven't started [negotiating with the Twins]." The Twins are expected to push for a contract extension this winter before he enters his walk year. The 26-year-old catcher was awarded with his second Gold Glove award on Tuesday and should be named the American League MVP later this month.

 Joe Mauer-C- Twins Nov. 11 - 3:14 pm et

Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that the Twins have begun extension talks with Joe Mauer's agent Ron Shapiro.
No word on any parameters of a deal, but team president Jerry Bell is confident about the negotiations. "Everything in time ... it'll work out — I hope, and I'm pretty sure," said Bell. "I feel good about it because I think he wants to stay here, and we sure want him to be here and all of his teammates want him to be here." Mauer, who is likely to be named the American League MVP later this month, will earn $12.5 million in 2010, the last year of his contract.
 Juan Morillo-R- Twins Nov. 10 - 4:39 pm et

Twins purchased the contract of RHP Juan Morillo from Triple-A Rochester.
Morillo was added to the Twins 40-man roster, thus protecting him from the Rule 5 draft. A hard-throwing right-hander, Morillo was claimed off waivers from the Rockies in April and posted a 22.50 ERA in three appearances with the big club in 2009. In 46 appearances with Triple-A Rochester, the 26-year-old was erratic, going 6-6 with a 3.90 ERA and 1.60 WHIP. On the bright side, he managed an electric 11.7 K/9.
 Carl Pavano-S- Twins Nov. 10 - 10:23 am et

Carl Pavano is interested in returning to the Twins, but will likely hit the open market.
"I want to sit down with the Twins and see which direction they want to go," said Pavano's agent Tom O'Connell. "[Pavano] really enjoyed his time there and finished great. He wants to see if it's a fit moving forward." O'Connell wants to give general manager Bill Smith the first crack at his client, but Pavano will almost surely hit the open market when free agency begins. The 33-year-old right-hander was 14-12 with a 5.10 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in a career-high 33 starts in 2009.
 Justin Huber-1B- Twins Nov. 9 - 4:04 pm et

Twins sent first baseman-outfielder Justin Huber outright to Triple-A Rochester.
Once upon a time Huber was a solid catching prospect, but the 27-year-old is now little more than Triple-A depth or a possible bench bat. He hit .273/.355/.482 in 121 games at Triple-A this season.
 Michael Cuddyer-OF- Twins Nov. 7 - 12:21 pm et

Twins exercised Michael Cuddyer's $10.5 million option for 2011.
Yes, you read that right: 2011. The team had five days after the World Series to make the decision, which will keep Cuddyer with the Twins through age 32. The former jack-of-all-trades flashes 20+ home-run power (32 in 2009) while cranking out a good amount of doubles. He plays a lousy right field and has only been "worth" over $8.8 million once. That was in 2006, when he was worth $11.3 million according to Fangraphs. The life-long Twin is a good -- if inconsistent -- player who is easily worth the option on a big market team, but we're not sure the decision is right for the Twins specifically. The team is likely taking the risk on the hopes that the club's new stadium will give them the resources to make such a decision logical.
 J.J. Hardy-SS- Twins Nov. 6 - 1:38 pm et

Twins acquired shortstop J.J. Hardy from the Brewers for outfielder Carlos Gomez.
The Twins just jump-started their offseason with an excellent buy-low addition. Hardy batted just .229/.302/.357 with 11 home runs and 47 RBI in 2009, falling out of favor with the Brewers once Alcides Escobar was promoted from the minors. Despite his pitfalls on offense in 2009, Hardy is one of the better fielding shortstops in the game. Even if he can't match his .821 OPS of 2008 again, he should be a marked improvement over recent alternatives in Minnesota, Orlando Cabrera included. An added bonus, thanks to an August demotion by the Brewers, Hardy is under team control for 2010 and 2011.
 J.J. Hardy-SS- Twins Nov. 6 - 11:57 am et

Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports that the Brewers have traded J.J. Hardy to the Twins for Carlos Gomez.
Hardy was a goner with the Brewers committing to Alcides Escobar at shortstop and the Twins have long been a rumored destination for him, so this deal makes sense. Gomez fell out of favor in Minnesota after arriving in the Johan Santana trade, but the speedy center fielder will be given a clear path to everyday playing time in Milwaukee as the replacement for free agent Mike Cameron.

 Joe Mauer-C- Twins Nov. 4 - 10:28 am et

Joe Mauer, who was hobbled by a sore hip flexor near the end of the season and into the first round of the playoffs, is already feeling better.
"He's doing very well," Twins GM Bill Smith said Tuesday. "We've gotten all good reports. I think he's pleased and looking forward to a fairly normal offseason and normal preparation for spring training." Mauer led the AL in batting average (.365), on-base percentage (.444) and slugging percentage (.587) in '09 and is likely to pick up his first MVP this month.
 Brian Buscher-3B- Twins Nov. 3 - 1:00 pm et

Twins sent infielder Brian Buscher outright to Triple-A Rochester.
The move takes him off the 40-man roster and gives Buscher an opportunity to become a minor league free agent. Buscher has nice on-base skills and experience at either infielder corner, but as a poor defensive third baseman with a .266/.343/.356 career line in 502 plate appearances he's expendable.
 Justin Morneau-1B- Twins Oct. 26 - 9:38 am et

La Velle E. Neal III reports that Justin Morneau is recovering well from surgery on his right hand.
"Hand is feeling better," Morneau wrote via e-mail. "Get the cast off this week and it should be good as new in about 4 weeks. They found a floating chunk of bone that kind of looked like a tooth but no tendon or ligament damage. Went as good as it could go." Morneau's hand should be healed by the end of the year. Meanwhile, the team expects the stress fracture in his lower back to heal with rest.
 Justin Morneau-1B- Twins Oct. 22 - 1:15 pm et

Justin Morneau had a bone chip removed from his wrist Tuesday.
Apparently the Twins had a 2-for-1 deal on bone chip removal, because Joe Nathan also had a pair of chips removed from his right elbow. Nathan's chips are obviously a much bigger issue, especially given that Morneau will spend the offseason focused on his recovery from a stress fracture in his lower back.
