 Johnny Damon-OF- Yankees Nov. 21 - 12:56 pm et

Ken Davidoff of Newsday reports that the Yankees' priority right now is re-signing Johnny Damon, with Hideki Matsui on the back-burner.
Even though Matsui turned heads in the World Series, Damon is the better property going forward considering he can hold his own in the field. Agent Scott Boras is pushing for a four-year deal, but we can't see anything more than two years. The Yankees and Damon should be able to come to an agreement fairly shortly, freeing up resources to devote to the free agent market.

 Shelley Duncan-OF- Yankees Nov. 21 - 8:19 am et

Yankees outrighted first baseman-outfielder Shelley Duncan from Triple-A Scranton/Wilks-Barre.
This being Duncan's second time with an outright assignment gives him the ability to become a free agent, which he will do so. The son of Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan, Shelley just never could break into the Yankees bench despite flashing solid power. He'll hook on elsewhere and hope to be the next Garrett Jones.
 Austin Jackson-OF- Yankees Nov. 20 - 6:49 pm et

Yankees purchased the contracts of OF Austin Jackson, INFs Reegie Corona, Eduardo Nunez, Kevin Russo and RHPs Hector Noesi, Ivan Nova and Romulo Sanchez.
The seven are now protected from December's Rule 5 draft. Jackson, 22, batted .300/.354/.405 with four home runs, nine triples, 23 doubles, 65 RBI and 24 stolen bases in 132 games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2009, and is often mentioned as New York's center fielder of the future.
 Johnny Damon-OF- Yankees Nov. 20 - 9:09 am et

According to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News, the Yankees would like to re-sign Johnny Damon to a two-year contract.
Damon's agent Scott Boras is pushing for a four-year deal, but it's doubtful he'll find that this winter. Damon had a fantastic 2009 season, finishing with a .282/.365/.489 batting line, 24 home runs, 82 RBI and 107 runs scored. But he just turned 36 years old and is an awful defender. If the Yanks let him walk, the likelihood of them re-signing Hideki Matsui no doubt increases.

 Phil Hughes-R- Yankees Nov. 19 - 2:37 pm et

According to FOXSports.com, the Yankees' offseason plan is unclear.
Relying on a three-man rotation throughout the playoffs, the Yankees could look to make the big splash by signing John Lackey or trading for Roy Halladay. However, they could also fortify the bullpen, inserting Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes back in the rotation. To that end, according to a rival executive, the Yankees plan to pursue relievers Rafael Soriano and Mike Gonzalez. Still, another source suggests that the Yankees prefer to address any bullpen holes from within. Whatever plan the World Champions may have, it's being kept under wraps.
 Nick Swisher-OF- Yankees Nov. 19 - 12:58 pm et

The Yankees are "quietly" letting teams know that Nick Swisher is available, says Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
Swisher is owed $15.75 million over the next two seasons, with a $10.25 club option for 2012, a pretty reasonable contract considering what he was worth in 2009. The 28-year-old outfielder batted .249/.371/.498 with 29 homers, 89 RBI with a career-high .869 OPS. Remember, the Yankees dangled Swisher in trade talks after acquiring him last winter, so it's no surprise to see his name come up again. We're a long way from seeing him being dealt, but the Yankees could have a say in Matt Holliday or Jason Bay after all.
 Andy Pettitte-S- Yankees Nov. 18 - 8:59 am et

Joba Chamberlain said Tuesday that he's hoping Andy Pettitte will return to the Yankees for the 2010 season.
"To see what he's done and the longevity he's had," said Chamberlain, "he's a great player and obviously we'd love to have him back." Pettitte is expected to spend a couple of weeks in reflection this winter before making a decision on whether to continue his career. He went 14-8 this past season with a 4.16 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in 32 starts (194 2/3 innings).
 Ian Kennedy-R- Yankees Nov. 17 - 8:55 pm et

Ian Kennedy struck out five over five innings to notch his second win in the AFL.
Kennedy attributes his strong AFL (4.25 ERA, 28 K in 29 1/3 IP) to increased confidence in his two-seamer and cut fastball. Kennedy missed most of 2009 thanks to an aneurysm in his right arm. Despite his progression, it's unlikely the righty ranks any higher than sixth on the starting pitching depth chart. He has a shot to contribute out of the bullpen in 2010 but it's likely the 24-year old will be dangled in trade talks as well.

 Sergio Mitre-S- Yankees Nov. 17 - 2:36 pm et

Yankees declined RHP Sergio Mitre's $1.25 million option for 2010.
Despite declining the option, Mitre is arbitration-eligible and under team control. His arbitration-salary will likely fall under the $1.25 million he would have made with the option. In 2009, his first season back from Tommy John surgery, Mitre was 3-3 with a 6.79 ERA and 1.63 WHIP in 12 appearances (nine starts). The 28-year-old right-hander will likely serve as rotation-depth next season, however he could also be used as trade bait.
 Johnny Damon-OF- Yankees Nov. 12 - 2:38 pm et

The Giants appear to have emerged as a "potential competitor" for Johnny Damon, reports Jon Heyman of SI.com.
Damon's agent Scott Boras is playing hardball, at least publicly, stating that the 36-year-old outfielder deserves another four-year contract. Heyman writes that the Yankees will "absolutely" not go that far, instead hoping to bring him back on a two-year contract. While the Giants may not go to the astronomical level that is needed to sign Matt Holliday or Jason Bay, they could be in Damon.

 Xavier Nady-OF- Yankees Nov. 11 - 4:48 pm et

Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Cardinals have interest in Xavier Nady.
Nady is one of Scott Boras' clients, so while the Cardinals addressed the Matt Holliday situation at length, they also reportedly discussed Nady, who is currently rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. It would be a tough sell in St. Louis if Holliday bolts for the highest bidder, but Nady could be a low-cost alternative.

 Brian Bruney-R- Yankees Nov. 11 - 4:13 pm et

Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes that the Yankees plan to tender a contract to Brian Bruney.
After a promising showing in 2008, Bruney dealt with some elbow problems in 2009, posting a 3.92 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 36/23 K/BB ratio in 44 games, spanning 39 innings. With the bump in innings pitched, he'll likely make $1.5 million in arbitration.
 Derek Jeter-SS- Yankees Nov. 11 - 3:39 pm et

General manager Brian Cashman is in no rush to discuss a contract extension with Joe Girardi.
It's amazing what a World Championship can do. "Am I open to discussing it? I’m not even in a position to have thought about it," said Cashman. "I can tell you right now, our coaches’ contracts have expired. So I need to deal with who isn’t signed, rather than who is." Girardi is signed through the 2010 season. He is 192-132 over his first two seasons at the helm in the Bronx.
 Freddy Guzman-OF- Yankees Nov. 11 - 2:15 pm et

Freddy Guzman has opted for free agency rather than accept an outright assignment to Triple-A Scanton/Wilkes-Barre.
Guzman played with four organizations in 2009, but his season ended with a ring. The Yankees acquired the 28-year-old outfielder from the Orioles in August, and he played a key role on Joe Girardi's bench, often appearing as a pinch-runner. Guzman was even included on the postseason roster during the ALCS. He'll look to latch on with another team.
 Josh Towers-R- Yankees Nov. 11 - 2:08 pm et

Josh Towers has opted for free agency rather than accept an outright assignment to Triple-A Scanton/Wilkes-Barre.
Towers was signed by the Yankees in May, but only made two appearances with the big club in September. Signed for organizational depth, the 32-year-old right-hander was one of Scanton/Wilkes-Barre's best starters, posting a 2.74 ERA in 101 2/3 innings. He would have been arbitration-eligible.
 Hideki Matsui-DH- Yankees Nov. 11 - 9:11 am et

According to the New York Daily News, more than a half-dozen GMs surveyed Tuesday believe Hideki Matsui can no longer play the outfield.
"I'd be surprised if any general manager in the National League was willing to roll the dice on Matsui," said one NL GM. "What happens if you sign him and his knees blow up?" The 35-year-old didn't play an inning in the outfield during the 2009 season and was an awful defender when his knees were in decent shape. He's still an excellent hitter, but needs to be shopped as a DH.
 Chien-Ming Wang-S- Yankees Nov. 11 - 8:36 am et

Chien-Ming Wang, who underwent left shoulder surgery in June, has been cleared to begin throwing by December 1.
The news probably won't excite the Yankees enough to get him off their list of non-tender candidates, but the progress he's showing will appeal to other teams. Wang went 1-6 this season with a 9.64 ERA before undergoing his season-ending procedure. He won 38 games between 2006 and 2007.
 Andy Pettitte-S- Yankees Nov. 10 - 3:46 pm et

Chad Jennings of the Journal News writes that a return to the Astros is unlikely for Andy Pettitte.
"If we can improve our situation, we’ll try to do that, but at this point in time, we’re pretty much focused on the guys that we have right now and we’ll see what’s out there on the edges," said Astros general manager Ed Wade. "We can’t add appreciable payroll. We’ve indicated that publicly, our payroll is going to go in the opposite direction." Look for Pettitte to continue his year-to-year arrangement with the Yankees until he hangs up his cleats.
 Johnny Damon-OF- Yankees Nov. 10 - 2:11 pm et

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that Johnny Damon might seek more than a one or two-year contract.
It's speculation on Sherman's part, but this is Scott Boras we're talking about, so Damon will surely listen to other offers. Damon batted .282/.365/.489 with 24 home runs, 82 RBI and 107 runs scored for the Yankees in 2009, proving especially valuable during the World Series. The Yankees likely won't dish out a long-term contract to an outfielder who just turned 37 years old. Boras will have a hard time convincing another club to do the same.
 Sergio Mitre-S- Yankees Nov. 10 - 1:31 pm et

According to the New York Post, the Yankees plan to retain Sergio Mitre for 2010.
Mitre have until next Thursday to decide whether to pick up Mitre's $1.5 million option for 2010. But even if they decline the option, Mitre is arbitration-eligible, so the Yankees could elect to keep him. For now, the only question is whether his arbitration-salary would fall under $1.5 million. In 12 appearances (nine starts) Mitre, 28, was 3-3 with a 6.79 ERA and 1.63 WHIP in his first season back from Tommy John surgery. The Yankees are optimistic that he will be better next season, and could serve as rotation depth or even as trade bait.
