 Randy Winn-OF- Yankees Feb. 9 - 11:45 am et

Yankees signed OF Randy Winn to a one-year, $1.1 million contract.
The two sides agreed to terms in late January, but the signing wasn't made official until Monday afternoon. Winn, 35, batted .262/.318/.353 last season with two home runs and 51 RBI in 597 plate appearances for the Giants. He was awful against left-handed pitching last year and is likely to serve in a left field platoon this season with Brett Gardner.
 Derek Jeter-SS- Yankees Feb. 9 - 9:53 am et

Yankees GM Brian Cashman said Monday that he has not begun contract extension negotiations with Derek Jeter or Mariano Rivera.
Both players are eligible for free agency at the conclusion of the 2010 season, but the Yankees don't seem worried. As long as Jeter and Mo continue to produce at an elite level, deals will almost certainly get done. Jeter, 35, batted .334 last season with 18 homers while Rivera, 40, posted a 1.76 ERA, a 0.90 WHIP and converted 44 saves in 46 chances.

 Johnny Damon-OF- Yankees Feb. 9 - 9:07 am et

Johnny Damon's agent, Scott Boras, told the Detroit Free Press on Monday that his client loves the NHL's Detroit Red Wings.
"When he and I go to a Greek restaurant, he always orders octopus," Boras said Monday. Red Wings fans celebrate hat tricks by throwing octopus carcasses on the ice at Joe Louis Arena and Boras is clearly trying to sell Damon to the city of Detroit. A marriage would make some sense, but the Tigers have yet to show serious interest in the 36-year-old defensively-inept outfielder. He batted .282/.365/.489 with 24 home runs last season.

 Marcus Thames-DH- Yankees Feb. 8 - 3:59 pm et

Yankees signed outfielder Marcus Thames to a minor league contract.
Thames receives $900,000 if he makes the major league roster out of spring training, which he will be invited to. He will compete with Randy Winn and Brett Gardner for playing time, as well as provide an extra right-handed bat in the outfield. Thames is a poor defensive outfielder, but he rocks left-handed pitching to the tune of an .845 career OPS. Originally drafted by the Yankees in 1996, Thames batted .252/.323/.453 with 13 home runs in 258 at-bats last season for the Tigers. Detroit released him in early November.
 Marcus Thames-DH- Yankees Feb. 8 - 3:30 pm et

Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Yankees have signed outfielder Marcus Thames.
Terms of the contract are not yet known. Thames could enter a left field platoon with Randy Winn. Generally considered a poor defensive outfielder, Thames has value in his .845 career OPS against left-handed pitching. The Yankees will also benefit from having an extra right-handed bat in the outfield. Thames, originally drafted by the Yankees in 1996, batted .252/.323/.453 with 13 home runs in 258 at-bats last season.

 Johnny Damon-OF- Yankees Feb. 5 - 9:34 am et

An American League executive told MLive.com Thursday that free agent outfielder Johnny Damon will be "lucky to get whatever he gets."
"I can’t believe anybody is going to offer Damon more than the $14 million and $6 million the Yankees did," said the unnamed executive. "If you turn them down for that, you deserve one year for $3 million or whatever he is going to get. In February, teams have got guys in place. My feeling is that now he is going to be lucky to get whatever he gets." Damon hit .282/.365/.489 with 24 homers and 107 runs scored last year but has drawn little interest from teams at his current asking price, whatever it may be.

 Johnny Damon-OF- Yankees Feb. 5 - 8:50 am et

Lynn Henning of the Detroit News believes "the Tigers and Johnny Damon by now might have a deal" if the club was willing to guarantee two years.
The Tigers are believed to have interest in signing the 36-year-old outfielder, but only to a one-year pact. "If they can do a one-year arrangement, even for $7 million or a bit more," writes Henning, "they could well go for it." Damon hit .282/.365/.489 with 24 homers and 107 runs scored last year and may as well wait until a team gets desperate during spring training.

 Johnny Damon-OF- Yankees Feb. 4 - 7:59 pm et

Scott Boras, the agent for outfielder Johnny Damon, said Thursday that he thinks there's still a "quality market" for his client.
"I still feel there is a quality market for Johnny Damon," Boras said, "and I'm negotiating with a number of teams. There are three teams out there that if they don't have Johnny Damon, they're not winning the division. He's the difference in these teams making the playoffs or not contending." USA Today's Bob Nightengale speculates that two of those three teams are the Braves and Tigers. It certainly adds up, whether they truly need Damon or not.

 Johnny Damon-OF- Yankees Feb. 3 - 3:52 pm et

A team source hinted to Mark Bowman of MLB.com that the Braves still aren't actively pursuing free agent outfielder Johnny Damon.
Bowman doesn't discount the idea altogether, though. He believes things could change if Damon remains unsigned and the Braves suffer an injury during Spring Training, or if his price tag falls in the $1-2 million range. Agent Scott Boras isn't about to settle for that and will continue to drum up interest elsewhere, however unlikely that may be.

 Joba Chamberlain-S- Yankees Feb. 3 - 12:24 pm et

Joba Chamberlain will be groomed as a starter this spring.
It's hardly news, if it all, but some in the Yankee universe are clamoring for Chamberlain to serve primarily as a setup man this season. He flourished in the role during last year's playoffs, but his future is in the starting rotation. Phil Hughes, Alfredo Aceves, Chad Gaudin and Sergio Mitre are also vying for the No. 5 spot this year. "It's something that's going to be a battle," Chamberlain said Tuesday. "The greatest part about it is it's not only going to make guys fight... it's going to make our team better."
 Johnny Damon-OF- Yankees Feb. 3 - 11:52 am et

Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski indicated Tuesday that the Tigers are not close to signing free agent outfielder Johnny Damon.
"We're not close to making any kind of deals at this point," Dombrowski told the Detroit News. Damon's agent, Scott Boras, told the newspaper earlier this week that his client would love to play for the Tigers. It was more an attempt to drum up local support than anything, however, and it remains to be seen if the club has any real interest. Damon hit .282/.365/.489 with 24 homers and 107 runs scored last year but is struggling to find attractive offers.

 Chien-Ming Wang-S- Yankees Feb. 3 - 11:14 am et

The Nationals have joined the running for free agent right-hander Chien-Ming Wang, according to MLB.com's Bill Ladson.
Dodgers representatives saw Wang (shoulder) throw off flat ground last week and told MLB.com that he's at least three months from full health, but that apparently hasn't slowed interest. The 29-year-old Taiwan native had a 9.64 ERA and a 2.02 WHIP in 12 outings (nine starts) last season while battling a shoulder injury. He owns a 4.16 career ERA and has also drawn looks this winter from the Mets and Cardinals, among a few others.
 Chien-Ming Wang-S- Yankees Feb. 1 - 10:24 pm et

The Dodgers saw Chien-Ming Wang (shoulder) throw off flat ground last week and believe he's at least three months from being 100 percent.
That won't help the 29-year-old's stock. He's drawn interest this winter from close to a dozen teams, including the Dodgers, Mets and Cardinals, but it's unlikely that any of them would sign Wang to a major league contract before he proves the health of his surgically-repaired right shoulder. Wang may have to wait until the season gets going before he finds a deal, unless some desperate club suddenly decides he's worth the risk.

 Johnny Damon-OF- Yankees Feb. 1 - 5:07 pm et

According to agent Scott Boras, Johnny Damon would like to play for the Tigers in 2010.
To be fair, Damon wants to play for anyone that will meet his contract demands. This is just a ploy by Boras to drum up local interest in the idea of signing the popular Damon. Will that interest move the Tigers to action? Seems unlikely at this juncture, despite Detroit's interest in a left-handed batter and leadoff hitter. Damon's hypothetical signing would push Carlos Guillen into the primary DH spot and Ryan Raburn into a complementary role.
 Johnny Damon-OF- Yankees Feb. 1 - 12:37 pm et

A source tells Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse that there's "zero chance" that the Reds' trade of Willy Taveras will open the door for Johnny Damon.
Some will speculate, but the Reds are probably just thrilled to get rid of the $4 million they would have owed Taveras this season. Besides, the Reds are likely at their spending limit after signing Orlando Cabrera over the weekend. Scott Boras and Damon will have to continue their search elsewhere.

 Chien-Ming Wang-S- Yankees Feb. 1 - 8:59 am et

The Dodgers are among the teams that have looked at Chien-Ming Wang's medical records, reports Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times.
The market for Wang is ramping up as we approach Spring Training. With his former manager Joe Torre in Los Angeles, many have considered the Dodgers a natural fit, however he has garnered serious interest from several teams. Working his way back from shoulder surgery, the 29-year-old right-hander isn't expected to pitch in the majors until May.

 Johnny Damon-OF- Yankees Jan. 31 - 2:04 pm et

According to MLB.com's Jane Lee, the Athletics are "over" their desire to acquire free agent outfielder Johnny Damon.
It's safe to assume that talks expired because Damon was not willing to budge on his asking price. He reportedly turned down a one-year, $6 million offer from the Yankees last week and is seeking something closer to $10 million annually. The 36-year-old outfielder, who hit .282/.365/.489 with 24 homers and 107 runs scored last year, might as well slow-play the market at this point and wait for a desperate team to buck up a decent salary.
 Johnny Damon-OF- Yankees Jan. 29 - 2:25 pm et

Free agent oufielder Johnny Damon said Friday that he hasn't ruled out returning to the Yankees, whether this season or in the future.
"I'm not ruling out not being in New York, whether it's starting the season with them, (or a) trade at the deadline, (or if they) sign me next year. I love New York," Damon said. The Yankees signed outfielder Randy Winn to a contract on Thursday and are expected to platoon him in left field with Brett Gardner this season. "Now I know (the Yankees) have a full roster right now," Damon continued, "(but) I never say never anymore." According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, he turned down a $6 million offer from the club last week.
 Johnny Damon-OF- Yankees Jan. 29 - 11:38 am et

According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, the Yankees offered Johnny Damon a one-year, $6 million contract late last week and he turned it down.
Half of the contract -- $3 million -- would have been paid out in deffered sums over the next few years. Damon, who hit .282/.365/.489 with 24 home runs, 82 RBI and 107 runs scored last year, is holding out for something better. So far the A's, Rays, Tigers, Reds, Braves and Blue Jays have expressed interest in the 36-year-old outfielder. With so much interest, perhaps he'll be able to top the Yanks' proposal, but it won't be by much.

 Alex Rodriguez-3B- Yankees Jan. 29 - 9:03 am et

Alex Rodriguez thought his career might be over last spring when he was forced to undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum in his hip.
A similar injury ended Bo Jackson's football and baseball careers. But the procedure to repair such a thing has improved greatly in the last several years. "Staring at retirement right in the face, kind of like Bo Jackson, that is the first thing I thought of," said Rodriguez. "Then having [Dr.] Marc Phillippon just doing an amazing intermediate surgery as we called it, it was a commitment I wanted to do for the team." Like him or not, A-Rod should be selected with confidence among the first five picks in drafts this year.
