 Oscar Villarreal-R- Phillies Feb. 4 - 10:54 am et

Phillies signed RHP Oscar Villarreal to a minor league contract.
Updating a previous report, Villarreal will not be invited to major league camp, as he is still rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. Villarreal, 28, last posted a 5.02 ERA in 37 2/3 innings in his last healthy season with the Astros in 2008, but boasts a 3.86 career ERA.
 Freddy Guzman-OF- Phillies Feb. 3 - 9:43 am et

Phillies signed OF Freddy Guzman to a minor league contract.
Guzman played with four different clubs last season, eventually finishing with the Yankees. The 29-year-old has a .270/.344/.360 batting line and 443 stolen bases in 3,046 minor league at-bats.
 Luis Maza-2B- Phillies Feb. 3 - 9:37 am et

Phillies signed infielder Luis Maza to a minor league contract.
Maza, 29, hasn't made a major league appearance since 2008, when he posted a disappointing .228/.282/.278 batting line in 79 at-bats with the Dodgers. He hit .300/.340/.428 with five homers, 44 RBI and 55 runs scored in 355 plate appearances. He's not likely to have an impact in 2010.
 Antonio Bastardo-S- Phillies Jan. 31 - 1:19 pm et

Antonio Bastardo is expected to get a crack at a full-time spot in the Phillies' bullpen during spring training.
Bastardo, 24, had a disappointing 6.46 ERA and 1.48 WHIP last year in 23 2/3 innings for the Phillies. But he posted a 1.50 ERA and six strikeouts in seven innings during the Dominican Winter League regular season, and then punched out 12 batters over 7 1/3 scoreless innings in the championship series. "There's no question he has the stuff to be a very successful major-league pitcher," assistant general manager Chuck LaMar said Saturday.
 Oscar Villarreal-R- Phillies Jan. 29 - 4:26 pm et

The Red Sox, Phillies, Diamondbacks and Rockies watched free agent Oscar Villarreal throw on Friday, according to Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse.
Villarreal's fastball was clocked between 89 and 90 MPH, which is pretty impressive considering he's just nine months removed from Tommy John surgery. The 28-year-old right-hander is hoping to score a minor league contract and a camp invite before spring training gets underway. He had a 5.02 ERA in 37 2/3 innings back in 2008, his last healthy season.
 Jose Contreras-S- Phillies Jan. 29 - 8:58 am et

Jose Contreras told Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. that he's willing to play any role for the Phillies this season.
"I think his quote was, 'I'd be willing to pick up bats if you need me to,' " Amaro joked. "So I think he's pretty much amenable to anything." The 38-year-old had a 4.92 overall ERA last season but posted a 1.59 ERA and 17/8 K/BB ratio in seven games (two starts) once he joined the Rockies. He's likely to find a few starts in the early going while Jamie Moyer (hernia, knee) recovers.
 Jose Contreras-S- Phillies Jan. 28 - 1:32 pm et

Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports that the signing of right-hander Jose Contreras is likely the team's final offseason move.
The Phillies have added Roy Halladay to their rotation, Placido Polanco to play third base, Ross Gload, Brian Schneider and Juan Castro for their bench and Danys Baez and Contreras for their bullpen, so aside from a possible minor league deal, they appear pretty well set to break camp. There have been some whispers about the team maintaining interest in Pedro Martinez, but they could look to sign him in-season if the veteran right-hander is still available.
 Pedro Martinez-S- Phillies Jan. 28 - 11:38 am et

Scott Lauber of the News Journal hears that the Phillies are interested in re-signing Pedro Martinez.
No surprise, the major hurdle is money. According to Lauber, Martinez wants to pitch a full season for $5 million or more. Martinez, 38, was 5-1 with a 3.63 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in nine starts with the Phillies last season and logged important innings during the team's World Series run. Martinez is still an artist on the mound, but hasn't managed more than 132 2/3 frames since the 2005 season.
 Jose Contreras-S- Phillies Jan. 28 - 11:16 am et

Phillies signed RHP Jose Contreras to a one-year, $1.5 million contract.
Contreras flirted with the idea of going to Japan, but has a fine chance of success by staying in the National League. The (alleged) 38-year-old was 6-13 with a 4.92 ERA last season, but posted a 1.59 ERA and 17/8 K/BB ratio in seven games (two starts) with the Rockies down the stretch. It's a pretty small sample size, but he still possesses nice velocity and averaged 7.25 K/9 last season, his highest since 2004. He should remain in the bullpen, but could be called upon for a few starts if Jamie Moyer isn't ready to start the season.
 Brad Lidge-R- Phillies Jan. 28 - 10:44 am et

Brad Lidge (knee) and J.C. Romero (elbow) have begun throwing, reports Todd Zolecki of MLB.com.
Both believe they will be ready for the start of the season, and though general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. has said that Lidge is ahead of Romero, they appear to be pretty even with their respective rehab programs. Lidge underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee earlier this month, while Romero had surgery to repair a flexor tendon in his pitching elbow in October.

 Jamie Moyer-S- Phillies Jan. 28 - 9:51 am et

Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com reports that Jaime Moyer (hernia, knee) believes he can be ready by the first week of the season.
Moyer has experienced a series of setbacks his surgically-repaired groin region, delaying surgery on his left knee. Despite Moyer's proclamation, general manager Ruben Amaro will try to find a low cost alternative among the remaining starters in free agency. It's possible that Moyer could be stuck in the bullpen again if Amaro uncovers a bargain.
Chan Ho Park-S- Phillies Jan. 27 - 2:49 pm et

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Giants have interest in free agent right-hander Chan Ho Park, but only with a minor league deal.
No surprise, Park still thinks he deserves a major league contract. It's hard to say he doesn't deserve it. He clearly doesn't belong in the rotation, but the 36-year-old right-hander was fantastic out of the bullpen with the Phillies last season, tallying a 2.52 ERA and 52/16 K/BB ratio in 50 innings.

 Carlos Ruiz-C- Phillies Jan. 26 - 3:25 pm et

Phillies signed C Carlos Ruiz to a three-year, $8.85 million contract with a $5 million option for 2013.
The move successfully buys out his arbitration years. With a $500,000 buyout on the fourth year, he'll receive at least $9 million guaranteed. He has a chance to earn more with performance incentives based on games played. "Chooch" batted .255/.355/.425 last season, establishing a new career-high with nine home runs while driving in 43 runs. The 31-year-old backstop made real strides at the plate last season, and played a huge part in another run at the World Series. He'll be the everyday catcher moving forward.
 Brian Bocock-SS- Phillies Jan. 26 - 2:48 pm et

Phillies claimed IF Brian Bocock off waivers from the Blue Jays.
Bocock, who was claimed off waivers from the Giants earlier this month, is quickly becoming the Hot Stove's hot potato. The 24-year-old shortstop hit .143 in 77 at-bats with the Giants in 2008 and hasn't made much progress at the plate since, batting just .230/.302/.316 with three home runs and 51 RBI between two levels in San Francisco's minor league system last season. He doesn't offer much besides a nice glove.
Chan Ho Park-S- Phillies Jan. 25 - 9:46 pm et

SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that the Rays and Cubs are among the teams eyeing free agent reliever Chan Ho Park.
Park scoffed at a one-year, $3 million contract offer from the Phillies in early December. He's still hoping to find a deal that is lengthier and contains a higher annual salary. The 36-year-old righty had an ugly 7.29 ERA over seven starts in 2009, but he compiled a 2.52 ERA in 38 relief appearances.

 Carlos Ruiz-C- Phillies Jan. 25 - 8:46 am et

According to Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com, Carlos Ruiz will receive a three-year, $8.85 million contract from the Phillies.
The contract includes a $5 million club option for a fourth year along with a $500,000 buyout and performance incentives based on games started. With Ruiz in tow, general manager Ruben Amaro Jr has taken care of all of his arbitration-eligible players -- Chad Durbin was signed to a one-year deal while outfielder Shane Victorino and right-hander Joe Blanton also signed three-year contracts.

 Carlos Ruiz-C- Phillies Jan. 24 - 6:08 pm et

Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com reports that the Phillies have signed catcher Carlos Ruiz to a three-year, $9 million contract.
Arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter, he asked for $2.5 million on Tuesday, but the Phillies followed a similar path to that of Joe Blanton and Shane Victorino by locking up Ruiz through his arbitration years. Ruiz, who turned 31 on Friday, batted .255/.355/.425 with nine home runs and 43 RBI with the Phillies last season, emerging as an everyday catcher. "Chooch" was one of the most potent bats during the postseason, batting .341 with two homers and nine RBI.
 Oscar Villarreal-R- Phillies Jan. 23 - 11:34 am et

Free agent right-hander Oscar Villarreal will throw for scouts next Friday in an attempt to find a job.
The 28-year-old had a fantastic rookie year for Arizona back in 2003 at age 21, but injuries and attrition have set him back. For the Royals in 2009, Villarreal was plagued by a sore elbow in spring training and did not play professionally. He was last sighted in 2008 with Houston, tossing 37 2/3 frames for a 5.02 ERA.
 Jose Contreras-S- Phillies Jan. 22 - 3:01 pm et

Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes reports that the Phillies have signed right-hander Jose Contreras to a one-year contract.
Contreras drew a surprising amount of interest from teams this winter, mostly from the National League. The 38-year-old had a 1.59 ERA and 17/8 K/BB ratio during seven appearances (two starts) with the Rockies near the end of the 2009 season after a tough run with the White Sox. The Phils are likely to use him as a long reliever.

 Shane Victorino-OF- Phillies Jan. 22 - 9:49 am et

Phillies signed OF Shane Victorino to a three-year, $22 million extension.
The deal, as first reported by Craig Calcaterra of NBCSports.com, will cover Victorino's last two arbitration-eligible seasons and his first year of free agency. The 29-year-old "Flyin' Hawaiian" batted .292/.358/.445 with 10 home runs, 62 RBI and 25 stolen bases last season. He will patrol center field for the Phillies again in 2010, and for at least two years after that.
