 Desmond Jennings-OF- Rays Nov. 19 - 3:25 pm et

Rays purchased the contracts of OF Desmond Jennings, RHP Jeremy Hellickson and LHP Alex Torres.
The Rays also reinstated 1B Carlos Pena from the 60-day disabled list to complete their 40-man roster in preparation for December's Rule 5 draft. Jennings, 23, and Hellickson, 22, are two of the organization's most highly-regarded prospects, while Torres, a 21-year-old left-hander, was acquired from the Angels in the Scott Kazmir trade.
 Fernando Perez-OF- Rays Nov. 19 - 2:29 pm et

Fernando Perez said a diving catch during spring training likely caused an injury to his left shoulder in addition a dislocated left wrist.
Perez had surgery on the wrist in March, but didn't didn't undergo shoulder surgery until after the season. "When I began working out again, we all assumed the pain was referred pain from my wrist," Perez wrote in an email to the St. Petersburg Times. "But once I got some confidence that I wasn’t injured, the more ambitious plays I attempted in the outfield told me I had something I ought to get checked out." 2009 was basically a lost season for the 26-year-old outfielder, but he expects to make a full recovery by spring training.
 Carl Crawford-OF- Rays Nov. 14 - 3:30 pm et

Joe Smith of the St. Petersburg Times doesn't think a report from Mike Silva's New York Baseball Digest that suggests Carl Crawford wants out of Tampa Bay has any merit.
While Smith didn't get an official word from the team, he writes that the unattributed report doesn't match up with what both sides have been saying all along. "I hope we can get something done, but if not I'll just go into next season, do what I have to do and try to help the team win and go from there," Crawford said in September. As recently as this week, Crawford's agent Brian Peters said that they were still looking forward to a potential long-term deal, while Rays executive VP Andrew Friedman said both sides were "very interested" in an extension when they picked up Crawford's $10 million option on Monday. It won't take long for this rumor to get thoroughly and thankfully debunked.
 R.J. Swindle-R- Rays Nov. 14 - 1:11 pm et

Rays signed LHP R.J. Swindle to a minor league contract.
He also received an invite to spring training. Swindle was claimed off waivers from the Brewers in August, but never threw a pitch for the Rays after he was designated for assignment just one day later. He finished the year in the Cleveland organization, posting a 4.05 ERA in six appearances with Triple-A Columbus. The soft-tossing 26-year-old will likely compete with Randy Choate, among others, to be Tampa's left-handed specialist.
 Carl Crawford-OF- Rays Nov. 14 - 12:10 pm et

Carl Crawford is reportedly "livid" the Rays picked up his $10 million option on his original four-year deal signed in 2005 and wants out of Tampa Bay.
The report is from Mike Silva's NY Baseball Digest, which is a fine New York baseball blog, but take it with a grain of salt. Says Silva's source: "He had a handshake agreement with management that they would renegotiate the contract instead of picking up the option and they went ahead and did it anyway. He’s pissed beyond belief." It's highly unlikely Crawford is moved during the offseason, but he'd be prime trade bait if the Rays fall out of the race early. We have trouble believing this report, because Crawford agreed to the option. Why include the option if there was an agreement to rip it up? Additionally, he didn't seem to have a problem with the 2009 option being picked up. Crawford is widely expected to command at last $15 million annually once he hits the open market.
 Andy Sonnanstine-S- Rays Nov. 13 - 10:17 am et

Andy Sonnanstine has already begun working out this winter in the hopes of avoid another disastrous season.
Sonnanstine finished 2009 with a 6-9 record, 6.77 ERA and 1.66 WHIP. "Currently I am working out harder and more often than I ever have before," the righty said Thursday. "The 2009 season was a rough year for me to say the least, and that alone has helped me push myself to get stronger, smarter and craftier. I am very excited for a great season ahead of me in 2010."
 Pat Burrell-DH- Rays Nov. 10 - 3:08 pm et

According to Ken Davidoff of New York Newsday, the Mets had internal discussions about acquiring Pat Burrell from the Rays.
With the amount of money Matt Holliday and Jason Bay are expected to make, the Mets are reportedly looking at a group of alternatives. Burrell, who has one year and $9 million left on his contract, could be one of them. Limited to just 122 games in 2009 due to a neck injury, Burrell hit .221/.315/.367 with 14 home runs and 64 RBI.
 Fernando Perez-OF- Rays Nov. 9 - 6:21 pm et

Fernando Perez, who underwent surgery on his left shoulder in October, is expected to be healthy by the start of spring training.
Perez went 7-for-34 (.206) with no walks and 11 strikeouts during a short stay with the Rays after returning in September from a fractured wrist. If healthy, the 26-year-old will fight for a backup outfield role this spring.
 Dioner Navarro-C- Rays Nov. 9 - 6:17 pm et

The Rays revealed Monday that catcher Dioner Navarro underwent surgery on his left elbow in late October.
The procedure was of the minor variety and Navarro is expected to be fine by the start of spring training. He hit just .218/.261/.322 with eight homers and 32 RBI in a disappointing 2009 campaign.
 Ramon Ramirez-R- Rays Nov. 9 - 3:58 pm et

Rays claimed RHP Ramon Ramirez off waivers from the Reds.
Not to be confused with the far superior Ramon Ramirez who remains property of the Red Sox, this one went 6-7 with a 4.03 ERA and 78/50 K/BB ratio in 127 1/3 innings at Triple-A this season. He could be a useful middle man.

 Carl Crawford-OF- Rays Nov. 9 - 3:55 pm et

Rays exercised outfielder Carl Crawford's $10 million option for 2010.
There was never any doubt, but Tampa Bay could have picked a $1.25 million buyout instead. Crawford will be a free agent following the 2010 season and has said that he'd like to remain with the Rays, but there's no indication that the two sides have made any progress on a long-term deal.
 Gregg Zaun-C- Rays Nov. 9 - 3:53 pm et

Rays declined catcher Gregg Zaun's $2 million option for 2010.
Zaun's option was part of the deal he signed with Baltimore last offseason, but Tampa Bay wanted nothing to do with him in 2010 at that price after picking him up in a mid-August trade. He'll look for backup work elsewhere after taking a $500,000 buyout.
 Brian Shouse-R- Rays Nov. 9 - 3:51 pm et

Rays declined LHP Brian Shouse's $2 million option for 2010.
Last winter Tampa Bay signed Shouse to a one-year, $1.55 million deal with a second-year team option, but the 40-year-old logged just 28 innings with a 4.50 ERA.
 Jesse Chavez-R- Rays Nov. 3 - 7:55 pm et

Rays acquired RHP Jesse Chavez from the Pirates for second baseman Akinori Iwamura.
Chavez, 26, had a 4.01 ERA in 67 1/3 innings as a rookie for the Pirates this year. He throws 92-96 mph and his changeup makes him solid enough against lefties, but as an extreme flyball pitcher, he gives up too many homers to be trusted in late-game situations. He's just a standard middle reliever.

 Gabe Kapler-OF- Rays Oct. 27 - 2:25 pm et

Rays re-signed outfielder Gabe Kapler to a one-year, $1.05 million contract.
Kapler gets a $50,000 raise after spending this season platooning with Gabe Gross in right field. All but 64 of his 238 plate appearances came against left-handed pitching and he'll fill a part-time role again in 2010 after hitting .239/.329/.439 overall.
 Evan Longoria-3B- Rays Oct. 21 - 11:26 am et

Rays hired Derek Shelton as hitting coach.
Tampa Bay fired hitting coach Steve Henderson despite setting a franchise record for runs this season and now replace him with Shelton, who was let go by the Indians last month along with the rest of Eric Wedge's staff.
 David Price-S- Rays Oct. 5 - 12:19 pm et

According to the St. Petersburg Times, Rays pitching coach Jim Hickey will return for the 2010 season.
Hickey was at the end of his contract, but had a productive meeting with Rays execs Monday morning at Tropicana Field. "They want to have me back and I want to be back," he said, "so that’s probably what’s going to happen. We’re going to talk in the next couple days and work out the details.’’ Tampa Bay's pitching staff posted a collective 4.33 ERA and 1.36 WHIP this season.
 Wade Davis-S- Rays Oct. 4 - 5:39 pm et

Wade Davis yielded five runs -- three earned -- in five-plus innings to take a loss against the Yankees on Sunday.
Davis was doing just fine through the first five scoreless innings, but he gave up a three-run homer to Alex Rodriguez and departed with two runners on base that would eventually score. Despite the rough inning, Davis' rookie campaign was encouraging as he posted a 3.72 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and a 36/13 K/BB in 36 1/3 innings. He'll be someone to target next season.
 Evan Longoria-3B- Rays Oct. 4 - 5:29 pm et

Evan Longoria went 3-for-3 with a solo homer against the Yankees in the season finale on Sunday.
Longoria got off to a scorching start of the season for the Rays, but he cooled down and finished with a .281-100-33-113-9 line that almost seems like a disappointment. While it was certainly an excellent season and Longoria has enormous potential, he didn't quite live up to his second round ADP. It will likely take the same type draft pick to acquire him next season, and entering his third year in the majors he'll be a better pick.
 Jeff Niemann-S- Rays Oct. 3 - 10:46 pm et

Jeff Niemann limited the Yankees to two earned runs over five innings Saturday as his Rays grabbed a 5-3 victory.
Niemann rung up five Yankees hitters against just one walk. The Rays didn't manage to claim a spot in playoffs this season, but Niemann has been a pleasant surprise. He entered the '09 campaign with just five major league appearances under his belt but will finish with a 13-6 record and 3.94 ERA over 30 starts.
