Dana Eveland-S- Blue Jays Feb. 6 - 4:28 pm et

Blue Jays acquired LHP Dana Eveland from the Athletics for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
Alex Anthopoulos is testing the notion that you can never have enough pitching. Eveland, 26, was designated for assignment by the Athletics this week after posting a 7.16 ERA and 2.18 WHIP in 13 games (nine starts) last season. The Jays surely hope he can resemble the same pitcher who surprised everyone in the first half of 2008, but unless he improves his command, it won't happen. A move to the National League would have been better for his career.
Dana Eveland-S- Blue Jays Feb. 6 - 3:38 pm et

According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, the Blue Jays have acquired LHP Dana Eveland from the Athletics in for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
He was designated for assignment earlier in the week. Eveland, 26, compiled a 7.16 ERA and 2.18 WHIP in 13 games (nine starts) with the Athletics last season and a 4.94 ERA in 21 starts with Triple-A Sacramento in the hitter-friendly PCL. He hinted at some success in the early part of the 2008 season, so he could be an interesting piece in the puzzle that will be the Blue Jays rotation this season.

Dirk Hayhurst-R- Blue Jays Feb. 5 - 5:35 pm et

Dirk Hayhurst underwent surgery Friday to repair fraying in the labrum of his right shoulder and is expected to miss 4-6 months.
Ouch. When news first broke of the scheduled surgery last week, the Blue Jays called it "exploratory" and were positive about a possible short recovery time. But chances are Hayhurst won't pitch at all in the first half of the 2010 season. The 27-year-old right-hander had a 2.78 ERA and a 13/9 K/BB ratio in 22 2/3 innings of relief for Toronto last season.
Vernon Wells-OF- Blue Jays Feb. 5 - 12:42 pm et

Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos told MLB.com's Jordan Bastian on Friday that his club is likely done adding players.
"As I sit here today, I don't see us doing anything [else before spring training]," said Anthopoulos, "but that's pretty fluid and it could change." The Jays finalized a one-year, $2.75 million contract with Kevin Gregg on Friday and made a few splashes earlier this winter. It's safe to assume their previously reported interest in Carlos Delgado no longer remains.

Kevin Gregg-R- Blue Jays Feb. 5 - 10:10 am et

Blue Jays signed RHP Kevin Gregg to a one-year, $2.75 million contract with a $4.5 million club option for 2011.
Gregg can award himself a two-year option worth $8.75 million for 2011-2012 that has to be exercised 10 days after the 2010 World Series. The 31-year-old had a 4.72 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 23 saves in 30 opportunities with the Cubs last season and will battle for Toronto's ninth-inning gig this spring.
Kevin Gregg-R- Blue Jays Feb. 4 - 6:16 pm et

Kevin Gregg's agent said Thursday that he is hopeful his client's deal with the Blue Jays will be finalized on Friday.
The two sides have reportedly agreed to a one-year, $2.75 million contract. But, according to Bastian, "some routine physical-related steps [are] dragging out the process." Gregg compiled a 4.72 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 23 saves in 30 opportunities with the Cubs last season and is expected to battle for closing duties with Toronto's Jason Frasor and Scott Downs this spring.

Dana Eveland-S- Blue Jays Feb. 4 - 12:26 pm et

According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, the Diamondbacks would consider bringing back left-hander Dana Eveland.
Eveland was designated for assignment by the Athletics this week and could be a possibility for Arizona in the waiver process. Eveland, 26, posted a 7.16 ERA and 2.18 WHIP with the Athletics last season, but hinted at some success in the early part of 2008. The Diamondbacks swapped Eveland to the Athletics in the deal for Dan Haren.

Rod Barajas-C- Blue Jays Feb. 4 - 11:12 am et

Matt Cerrone of MetsBlog.com hears that the Mets are still interested in free agent catcher Rod Barajas.
The Mets were fortunate that Bengie Molina went back to San Francisco, but now they're left with an undesirable tandem of Omir Santos and Henry Blanco. Cerrone writes that the Mets have talked with the agent for Barajas at various times this offseason, though they hadn’t been very substantive talks up until now. The 34-year-old backstop smacked 19 homers last season and should come for nickels on the dollar as Spring Training approaches.

Dirk Hayhurst-R- Blue Jays Feb. 3 - 12:53 pm et

Dirk Hayhurst is scheduled to undergo exploratory surgery to evaluate the status of his sore right shoulder.
It's not exactly clear when the soreness first came about. Hayhurst, a 27-year-old righty, had a 2.78 ERA and 13/9 K/BB ratio in 22 2/3 frames for the Jays last season and went 4-6 with a 3.75 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 48/12 K/BB ratio for the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s. The procedure will almost certainly hurt his chances of being ready by the start of spring training.
Wade Townsend-S- Blue Jays Feb. 3 - 9:39 am et

Blue Jays signed RHP Wade Townsend to a minor league contract.
Townsend, the Rays' 2005 first-round pick, threw just 2 2/3 innings last season at rookie ball. He's had serious injury issues since starting his career and there might not be enough time for him to turn it around.
Kevin Gregg-R- Blue Jays Feb. 2 - 7:46 pm et

Kevin Gregg has a one-year, $2.75 million deal with the Blue Jays, reports Jon Heyman of SI.com.
The deal includes two options that could make the deal worth close to $12 million, according to Heyman. Gregg immediately becomes the favorite for saves over Jason Frasor and Scott Downs, though it's not clear if he has already been guaranteed the ninth-inning gig. The 31-year-old compiled a 4.72 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 23 saves in 30 opportunities with the Cubs last season before losing the closer's gig to Carlos Marmol.

Kevin Gregg-R- Blue Jays Feb. 2 - 2:14 pm et

The Blue Jays are close to signing free agent reliever Kevin Gregg, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com.
If he signs with Toronto, he should become the favorite for saves over Jason Frasor and Scott Downs, though it's not clear if he'll be guaranteed the ninth-inning gig from the outset. Gregg, 31, compiled a 4.72 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 23 saves in 30 opportunities with the Cubs last season, eventually losing the closer role to Carlos Marmol.

Kevin Gregg-R- Blue Jays Feb. 2 - 1:07 pm et

A source tells Corey Brock of MLB.com that the Padres don't appear to be among the finalists to sign free agent reliever Kevin Gregg.
The Padres have shown some interest in Gregg, but he is currently seeking an opportunity to close. That wouldn't be the case in San Diego unless Heath Bell becomes trade bait. He would likely find an open competition to close in Toronto, though the Marlins have also expressed interest in bringing him back.

Kevin Gregg-R- Blue Jays Feb. 2 - 11:40 am et

Kevin Gregg's agent, Danny Horwits, said Tuesday morning that he "should know soon" where his client is headed for the 2010 season.
Gregg has drawn interest from the Marlins, Rockies, Blue Jays and Padres in recent weeks. Toronto can offer him the best shot at closing duties, but perhaps the other clubs will make stronger bids. The 31-year-old had a 4.72 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP in 72 games last year for the Cubs and converted 23-of-30 save opportunities before Carlos Marmol secured the role.

Scott Downs-R- Blue Jays Feb. 2 - 10:41 am et

Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston confirmed last week that Scott Downs and Jason Frasor will battle for ninth-inning duties this spring.
"It's going to be between [Downs & Frasor] and anybody else that Alex brings into camp," Gaston told Jordan Bastian of MLB.com. Downs had a 3.09 ERA and was 9-of-13 in save opportunites last season while Frasor posted a 2.50 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 11 saves in 14 chances. The Blue Jays are also interested in acquiring free agent Kevin Gregg, who could join the mix.

Kevin Gregg-R- Blue Jays Feb. 2 - 9:55 am et

MLB.com's Jordan Bastian reports that the Blue Jays have real interest in acquiring free agent reliever Kevin Gregg.
The Marlins and Rockies are also keyed into negotiations, but Toronto can probably offer him the best chance at saves of the three. Gregg, 31, had a 4.72 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP in 72 games last year for the Cubs and converted 23-of-30 save opportunities while he owned the ninth-inning role.
Kevin Gregg-R- Blue Jays Feb. 1 - 5:13 pm et

Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that the Rockies are a finalist for free agent reliever Kevin Gregg, but not the favorite.
That's because, according to Renck, Gregg has been guaranteed the closer's job with the Marlins, while he would be just a setup man with the Rockies. The 31-year-old right-hander had a 4.72 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP in 72 games last year for the Cubs, converting 23-of-30 save opportunities before losing the closer's job to Carlos Marmol. Renck expects Gregg's decision this week.

Dana Eveland-S- Blue Jays Feb. 1 - 1:44 pm et

A's designated LHP Dana Eveland for assignment.
In what is turning out to be a busy business day in Oakland, the team (perhaps temporarily) parts ways with Eveland to clear room on the 40-man roster. Eveland blew a good opportunity to establish himself as a major league starter in 2009, finishing with a 7.16 ERA and 2.18 WHIP. The 26-year-old should draw some attention from other organizations.
Dustin McGowan-S- Blue Jays Feb. 1 - 11:31 am et

According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, the Blue Jays are "cautiously optimistic" after Dustin McGowan's (shoulder) throwing session last week.
They can't possibly count on him, as McGowan has been plagued by shoulder problems in each of the past two seasons. He's out of options, so there's a chance he could start the season on the disabled list while the Blue Jays figure out how to handle him. However, if he's right, the Jays suddenly have a very intriguing rotation.
Kevin Gregg-R- Blue Jays Jan. 31 - 5:10 pm et

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Marlins have made an offer to free agent reliever Kevin Gregg.
Gregg would serve as a setup man in south Florida. The 31-year-old right-hander had a 4.72 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP in 72 games last year for the Cubs. He also converted 23-of-30 save opportunities before Carlos Marmol grabbed the ninth-inning role from him near the end of the season.
