 Shawn Estes-S- Nationals Feb. 8 - 9:02 pm et

Nationals signed LHP Shawn Estes to a minor league contract.
Estes hasn't pitched in the major leagues since 2008, when he posted a 4.74 ERA and 1.56 WHIP in 43 2/3 innings with the Padres. He turns 37 in a few weeks and isn't likely to have a great impact this year.
 Ian Desmond-SS- Nationals Feb. 6 - 6:00 pm et

According to Bill Ladson of MLB.com, manager Jim Riggleman said Ian Desmond could play all three outfield positions, in addition to shortstop and second base.
Yikes. Cristian Guzman clearly wasn't okay with moving to second base, so the Nationals pursued Orlando Hudson and finally signed Adam Kennedy. This leaves Desmond out in the cold. The 24-year-old was used in a similar way by Riggleman down the stretch last season, including one start in right field, five starts at second base and 14 starts at shortstop, but he was used almost exclusively at shortstop in the minors, making only one appearance in the outfield over six seasons. It promises to be an adventure.
 Shawn Estes-S- Nationals Feb. 6 - 8:31 am et

The Associated Press reports that the Nationals have signed LHP Shawn Estes.
Estes was last seen in June of 2009 being released from his minor-league obligation with the Dodgers. He posted a 3.07 ERA in 13 starts and could make up to $1 million if he makes the major league roster. He might surprise many and open the year in the Nationals rotation.

 Adam Kennedy-3B- Nationals Feb. 5 - 1:45 pm et

Nationals signed 2B Adam Kennedy to a one-year, $1.25 million contract with a $2 million club option for 2011.
Kennedy, 34, batted .289/.348/.410 with 11 homers and 29 doubles in 529 at-bats last season for the A's. He played all around the infield in Oakland, but will man second base primarily for the Nationals this season. That is, until top infield prospect Ian Desmond comes along. NL-only leaguers may be able to get some use out of Kennedy for the first few months of 2010.
 Adam Kennedy-3B- Nationals Feb. 5 - 9:16 am et

Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that Adam Kennedy's contract is worth $1.25 million this year and contains a $2 million option for 2011.
It's not a terrible contract, as long as Kennedy can come close to matching his 2009 production with the A's. The 34-year-old batted .289/.348/.410 with 11 homers and 63 RBI last season. He's expected to serve as the Nationals' starting second baseman this year.
 Adam Kennedy-3B- Nationals Feb. 5 - 12:32 am et

The Nationals agreed to terms late Thursday evening with second baseman Adam Kennedy, according to MLB.com's Bill Ladson.
Kennedy will take over as the everyday starting second baseman for the Nationals. The 34-year-old did surprisingly well last season, batting .289/.348/.410 with 11 homers and 63 RBI in Oakland, but he's not a super option in mixed leagues. NL-leaguers could try him out if desperate. The fact is, he's old and Ian Desmond is going to play somewhere at some point this season. Financial terms were not disclosed.
 Adam Kennedy-3B- Nationals Feb. 4 - 2:26 pm et

Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports that with Orlando Hudson no longer an option at second base, the Nationals could sign free agent Adam Kennedy or pursue a trade.
Of course, they could also just go with Cristian Guzman at second base and Ian Desmond at shortstop, but the behavior of general manager Mike Rizzo this offseason doesn't indicate that they are ready for that. The 33-year-old Kennedy has been their fallback all along, but they might as well see what they have in Desmond at this point.

 Kevin Mench-OF- Nationals Feb. 3 - 8:42 am et

Nationals signed OF Kevin Mench to a minor league contract.
The deal comes with an invitation to spring training, where Mench will try to win a spot as a backup outfielder. He spent the 2009 season over in Japan, playing for the Hanshin Tigers on a $2 million salary. The 32-year-old hit .243/.321/.357 in 115 at-bats for the Blue Jays back in 2008.
 Adam Kennedy-3B- Nationals Feb. 2 - 2:56 pm et

Adam Kennedy told Bill Ladson of MLB.com that he hasn't heard from the Nationals in about a week.
Also of note, he says the Nationals are currently waiting on Orlando Hudson's decision. Kennedy wouldn't be a bad fallback option if the O-Dog decides to chase more guaranteed money elsewhere, but it's pretty clear that he has been their top choice all along. Hudson is expected to make a decision this week.
 Craig Stammen-S- Nationals Jan. 31 - 3:05 pm et

Craig Stammen told MLB.com's Bill Ladson on Sunday that his surgically-repaired elbow is 100 percent healthy.
Stammen underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow in September, cutting his 2009 season a few weeks short. The 25-year-old went 4-7 last year with a 5.11 ERA, a 48/24 K/BB ratio and a 1.29 WHIP in 19 starts. He may be worth using in some deeper NL-only leagues this season.
 John Lannan-S- Nationals Jan. 31 - 2:31 pm et

John Lannan underwent LASIK eye surgery this offseason.
He also claims to be in "the best shape of his life," which is nice if you're into pre-spring cliches. Lannan, 27, went 9-13 last season with a 3.88 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 89 strikeouts in 206 1/3 innings (33 starts). He's not an attractive fantasy option but he might be Washington's most reliable starter.
 Miguel Batista-R- Nationals Jan. 29 - 8:46 pm et

Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports that the Nationals see the newly-signed Miguel Batista as a starting pitcher in the back end of their rotation.
Because that's what losing organizations do. Batista, who turns 39 next month, posted a 4.04 ERA in 71 1/3 innings out of Seattle's bullpen last season, extremely fortunate numbers when you consider he averaged 4.92 BB/9. His numerous shortcomings at least have a chance of being hidden in the bullpen. Hopefully the Nationals come to their senses during Spring Training.
 Adam Dunn-OF- Nationals Jan. 29 - 4:08 pm et

MLB.com's Bill Ladson says contract negotiations between the Nationals and first baseman-outfielder Adam Dunn are at "Stage 0."
In other words, the two sides are working on the ground floor and have a long way to go before an agreement is reached. Dunn smacked a team-high 38 home runs and tallied 105 RBI in '09 while posting a .927 OPS. He's entering the final season of a two-year, $20 million deal that he signed last February.
 Adam Dunn-OF- Nationals Jan. 29 - 2:27 pm et

Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports that the Nationals and first baseman-outfielder Adam Dunn are "talking about" a contract extension.
Dunn batted .267/.398/.529 last season and paced all Nationals with 38 homers and 105 RBI while earning $8 million. He is under contract for the 2010 season at a salary of $12 million. The slugger just turned 30 and could help the Nats build a respectable ball club over the long term.
 Miguel Batista-R- Nationals Jan. 29 - 9:27 am et

Nationals signed RHP Miguel Batista to a minor league contract.
Batista, who turns 39 in February, posted a 4.04 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and a 52/39 K/BB ratio in 71 1/3 innings last season for Seattle. He's likely to land a spot in Washington's bullpen this spring and will serve as a long reliever.
 Livan Hernandez-S- Nationals Jan. 27 - 9:34 pm et

Bill Ladson of MLB.com tweets that RHP Livan Hernandez sent a contract proposal to the Nationals in December and never heard back.
Hernandez split the season between the Mets and Nationals, totaling a 5.44 ERA in 31 starts. ESPN's Jerry Crasnick earlier reported that the Nats are looking for a "Livan Hernandez type" as insurance for the rotation. Clearly, it's not Hernandez himself. He'll likely have to settle for a minor league deal as Triple-A insurance.
 Tyler Walker-R- Nationals Jan. 25 - 6:08 pm et

Nationals signed RHP Tyler Walker to a one-year, $650,000 contract.
Walker, 33, posted a 3.06 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP over 35 1/3 innings last season in a middle relief role for the Phillies. He'll work in a similar capacity this year for Washington and should provide an upgrade for their bullpen.
 Chris Duncan-OF- Nationals Jan. 25 - 5:54 pm et

Nationals signed outfielder Chris Duncan to a minor league contract.
The defensively-challenged Duncan might have been a better fit in the American League, but he will be able to compete for a roster spot in Washington. Duncan hit .227/.329/.358 with five home runs and 32 RBI in 260 at-bats for the Cardinals last year before he was dealt to the Red Sox. Boston shipped him to the minors and cut him after he hit just .188 with two home runs and 10 RBI in 85 at-bats for Triple-A Pawtucket.
 Tyler Walker-R- Nationals Jan. 25 - 5:46 pm et

The Nationals have signed RHP Tyler Walker to a one-year contract, pending a physical, according to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.
Walker revived his career by posting a 3.06 ERA in 32 appearances for the Phillies last year. The 33-year-old has a 4.32 career ERA over seven major league seasons and should take on a middle relief role in Washington.

 Chuck James-S- Nationals Jan. 25 - 5:02 pm et

Nationals signed LHP Chuck James to a minor league contract.
James underwent rotator cuff and labrum surgery in September 2008 and missed all of last season. Because of his extreme flyball tendencies -- and the Nationals wide-open rotation -- Washington makes a lot of sense as a landing place. James finished '08 with a 2-5 record and a 9.10 ERA in seven starts with the Braves and was promptly non-tendered.
