Beat writer Joe Reedy speculates that the Bengals could release Laveranues Coles and make Andre Caldwell their No. 2 receiver next season.
It's not that far-fetched of an idea considering how unexplosive Coles was and the strong possibility of an uncapped year. Still, Caldwell probably isn't the real answer opposite Chad Ochocinco and the Bengals would be best served by addressing the issue outside the organization.

Laveranues Coles suffered a possible concussion and a thumb injury in Saturday's season-ending loss to the Jets.
Coles' final game of the year was among his best. He failed to get double teams off Chad Ochocinco and his season-high for yards was 76. The Bengals sorely need to upgrade with a deep threat this offseason.

Laveranues Coles left Saturday's game against the Jets with a head injury.
Coles took a helmet to his face mask and had to be helped off the field. With just four minutes left, he's doubtful to return. Coles led the Bengals with six catches for 48 yards and a touchdown before suffering the injury. Cincy is in serious need of speed at wide receiver, so Coles' job will be in jeopardy this offseason. Signed for $27.5M over four years, he's been a huge free agent bust.

Laveranues Coles was sidelined in the second quarter of Saturday's game with a jammed left thumb, but he returned on the next series.
With Darrelle Revis tying up Chad Ochocinco, Coles was Carson Palmer's favorite target early in the game. Quan Cosby will play in the slot, with Andre Caldwell moving into base sets if Coles aggravates the injury.

Laveranues Coles caught three passes for 19 yards in Week 17 but the Bengals fell to the Jets.
Coles was held out of the end zone for the first time in three weeks, but he did fairly well considering the icy conditions in New York. He will finish the regular season with over 500 yards receiving and five touchdowns, and will play a decent-sized role in the Bengals' playoff hopes.

Laveranues Coles caught three passes for 43 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's win over the Chiefs.
Coles has now found pay dirt in two straight weeks. Of course, that doesn't change the fact that he's a third or fourth option in the Bengals' passing attack and carries little-to-no fantasy value.
