Sammy Morris ran for nine yards on one carry and caught three passes for 15 yards in the Patriots' season-ending playoff loss.

The Patriots' backfield distribution was altered when the team fell behind 24-0 in the first quarter. Morris, 33 in March, missed four games in 2009 with a knee injury but averaged a rock-solid 4.4 YPC and remains effective in the passing game. Due just $1 million next season, Morris is likely to return as a member of New England's running back by committee.

Patriots running backs coach Ivan Fears emphasized Thursday that the Patriots trust Laurence Maroney with the ball in his hands.

The coaches are working to cure Maroney of his fumblitis. We had tentatively been expecting Sammy Morris and Fred Taylor to handle early down work, but the truth is nobody knows what to expect with this backfield until Sunday's game starts. It certainly seems like Maroney is out of the doghouse -- if he was ever there in the first place.

Former Patriots linebacker and current ESPN analyst Tedi Bruschi speculated Tuesday that Laurence Maroney will not re-emerge as the lead back in the playoffs.

"I think the Patriots are going to go with Sammy Morris and Fred Taylor," Bruschi said. Maroney was believed to be in the doghouse after losing his third goal-line fumble of the season in Week 16. He was deactivated in Week 17, though Bill Belichick has been tight-lipped about the situation. We expect Morris and Taylor to carry the load on early-downs with Kevin Faulk handling passing situations.

Sammy Morris rushed seven times for just nine yards and added three receptions for 13 yards against the Texans in Week 17.

Morris was shaken up late in the game, limping slightly on the sidelines. It's a situation to monitor this week. Morris will likely split touches with Laurence Maroney, Fred Taylor, and Kevin Faulk in a four-man committee during the playoffs.

Sammy Morris rushed 12 times for 95 yards and one touchdown in Week 16 against the Jaguars.

Morris saw extensive action following Laurence Maroney's goal line fumble on the Patriots' first drive, busting through a Reggie Nelson tackle for a career-long 55-yard run and then punching it into the end zone a few plays later.

Morris appeared to be making a move on Laurence Maroney for the Pats' featured back role last week with 11 touches for 65 yards, but lost a fumble in Sunday's win and was a non-factor thereafter. Consider Morris merely a handcuff for Maroney in fantasy leagues heading to Week 15 at the Bills.
