Lee Westwood shot 3-over-par 69-78=147 at the Abu Dhabi Championship, missing the cut by five strokes.
Currently ranked fourth in the world ranking, Westwood hadn't missed a cut since the BMW PGA Championship in May. Afterwards, he cited unfamiliarity with his new irons as the root of his poor play in the United Arab Emirates. "The way I've driven it today, I flushed it off the tee, I just need to do some work with my irons," said Westwood. "I don't know if they've put the wrong shafts in, they just don't feel right and they don't feel the same. They feel like fishing rods. I don't think it's much to do with the grooves, I just haven't had a chance to go out there and do any testing." He'll try them out again at next week's Qatar Masters, where he finished T27 a year ago.

Lee Westwood has added the Honda Classic on March 4-7 to his schedule in the U.S.
Originally, Westwood's 10 planned starts consisted of the four majors, three WGCs, Houston, Quail Hollow and THE PLAYERS. The Honda immediately precedes the WGC-CA Championship at Doral. He's played the Honda once, in 2006, but the event moved to PGA National the following year, and it remains the host now. Westwood is allowed to sneak in one more start if he wishes, as non-members are capped at 12 (excluding special invitations).

Lee Westwood double-bogeyed the 18th hole at Sherwood CC en route to a 1-under-par 71 in the opening round of the Chevron World Challenge.
Westwood's tee ball at the last landed right of the fairway on a steep, uphill lie in an area that appeared to be a mixture of dirt and wood chips or other hazard-like substances. After his wild blast out, he was seen stretching out his right leg and reaching near his groin area in the fairway. Afterwards, Steve Sands of Golf Channel asked him about the discomfort. In response, Westwood alluded to "pulling" something but stopped short of going into detail. Undoubtedly, he'll have his body examined as a result. In his post-round presser, Westwood confirmed that he will not be taking up PGA Tour membership in 2010. He has scheduled Houston, Quail Hollow and THE PLAYERS in addition to the four majors and three WGCs.

Lee Westwood carded a course-record and bogey-free, 8-under-par 31-33=64 in the final round of the Dubai World Championship, winning the tournament by six strokes and the inaugural Race to Dubai.
Westwood had just two bogeys all week en route to a 23-under 265. Ross McGowan finished second at the Earth Course at 271. With the victory, Westwood pockets $1.25 million as well as the first-place, bonus prize money of $1.5 million for winning the Race to Dubai. Rory McIlroy finished second in the R2D; Martin Kaymer placed third. Afterwards, Westwood said, "In all fairness I think that's about as good as I've ever played under this pressure. It's definitely the biggest moment of my golfing life to date. I knew that before I set out and it gives me a lot of confidence that I was able to hold myself together - until now." Then the emotion of the moment took hold as the worthy champion teared up.

Lee Westwood is 15-under-par 66-69-66=201 through three rounds of the Dubai World Championship, maintaining a two-stroke lead over Ross McGowan (71-66-66=203).
Westwood was bogey-free today and has given back just two strokes all week. Moreover, he and McGowan were two of the three that carded the field-low 66s in the third round. A stable of three golfers, including Rory McIlroy and Padraig Harrington, are five strokes off Westwood's pace. Also at stake on Sunday are exemptions into the U.S. and British Opens, awarded to the top-15 and top-30, respectively, in the final Race to Dubai standings.

Lee Westwood is 9-under-par 66-69=135 through two rounds of the Dubai World Championship and will sleep on a two-stroke lead over 18-hole leader, Robert Allenby (65-72), Rory McIlroy (68-69) and four others.
Despite a T-54 in Hong Kong, where he regretted playing, there are few if any as zeroed in on their games right as Westwood. He finally returned to the winner's circle in Portugal last month, but his overall consistency at a high level makes him a favorite everywhere he tees it up. The winner of the Race to Dubai receives $1.5 million in bonus prize money on top of his paycheck at the Dubai World Championship.
