 Jim Thome-DH- TwinsFeb. 4 - 1:24 pm et
Twins signed DH Jim Thome to a one-year, $1.5 million contract.
It's potentially one of the better value signings of the offseason. Thome, 39, had a down year by his standards last season, but still destroys right-handed pitching (881 OPS last season). It should be interesting to see how much playing time he gets, as Jason Kubel was the primary designated hitter last season. Delmon Young could be benched on the days Thome is in the lineup, with Kubel moving to the outfield.

 Jim Thome-DH - Twins Jan. 26 - 8:03 pm et

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire contradicted earlier quotes by GM Bill Smith when he said newly-signed Jim Thome is "not going to just come off the bench," according to St. Paul Pioneer Press reporter Kelsie Smith.
In a flurry of quote-related Tweets, Kelsie Smith passed along that Thome said he was never promised a number of at-bats, which jived with Bill Smith's assertion that Thome would be a "bat off the bench" for the Twins. Gardenhire, however, has not always been in lockstep with his general manager and said: "A guy like Jim, he's not going to just come off the bench, he's going to get time out there." Gardy summed up his Thome thoughts thusly: "I think it's a joy just to watch him walk up to the plate. He looks like stinking Babe Ruth." Ruth or not, Thome would be a lineup upgrade over Delmon Young against right-handed pitching, a move which would require Jason Kubel to move to the outfield on those occasions.

Jim Thome will be a "bat off the bench" for the Twins, according to general manager Bill Smith.
Thome agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million contract early Tuesday evening. "The plan is for us to play Young (LF), Span (CF), Cuddyer (RF) and Kubel (DH). ... Jim Thome’s a bat off the bench," Smith said. This dogmatic stance is sure to disappoint Twins fans, who will justifiably believe Thome's bat against right-handed pitching is much more dangerous than Delmon Young's -- a lineup swap made possible by starting Kubel in left field. Thome will instead be a pinch-hitter and sporadic DH starter when Twins manager Ron Gardenhire gives his usual starters a day off.

Jim Thome has agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Twins, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune's La Velle E. Neal.
Thome can earn an additional $700,000 in incentives. It's a stellar bargain-basement signing by the Twins, who add a still-dangerous bat at a negligible price. Thome, who turns 40 later this season, hit .249/.366/.481 last year with 23 homers. The Twins have Jason Kubel firmly entrenched at DH and Justin Morneau at first base, so finding Thome playing time could be tricky. Adding a hitter of Thome's pedigree at this price was a no-brainer, however, and Ron Gardenhire won't lament the creativity it requires to get the veteran at-bats. Moving Kubel into the outfield in lieu of Delmon Young while giving Thome the majority of DH at-bats against right-handers would give the team it's most dangerous lineup, but it's currently unclear if that will happen.

The Indians aren't interested in Jim Thome, reports Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com.
Hardly surprising. The Indians already have one immovable object in Travis Hafner, so the addition of Thome would complicate things since neither have the ability to play the field. Thome previously spent the first 12 years of his career with the Indians. A return to the White Sox is also unlikely, but the Twins have maintained interest in the 39-year-old slugger as of Tuesday afternoon.

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen confirmed Monday evening that Jim Thome will not be returning to the club in 2010.
Guillen and a few others hinted at the idea of a reunion this weekend at the organization's annual fan-friendly SoxFest. Perhaps they were just trying to rile up the crowd. Thome, 39, will have to look elsewhere for employment and has reportedly been in contact with the Twins, Rays and Tigers.
