Jason Schmidt will likely retire, reports Ken Gurnick of MLB.com.
Schmidt filed for free agency on Wednesday, but said he isn't planning to pitch next year and is likely to retire. Schmidt went 2-2 with a 5.61 ERA in four starts in 2009, but was hampered by problems with his surgically-repaired right shoulder in August.

Dodgers transferred RHP Jason Schmidt to the 60-day disabled list.
The move makes room for newly acquired hurler Vicente Padilla. Schmidt went 2-2 with a 5.61 ERA earlier in the year, but was bitten by the injury bug yet again in early August. The Dodgers have just three wins and two shoulder operations to show for their three-year investment. If he is in fact done, the right-hander finishes 130-96 with a 3.96 ERA in 1,996 1/3 innings. He led baseball with a 2.34 ERA for the Giants in 2003, placing second in the Cy Young race.

Dodgers placed RHP Jason Schmidt on the 15-day disabled list because of problems with his surgically repaired right shoulder.
Schmit gave up four runs over 3 2/3 innings Wednesday in a loss to the Brewers, and has a 5.61 ERA to go along with a 8/12 K/BB ratio in four starts this season. It's not clear if the shoulder issues he's having are serious. There's a good chance the Dodgers simply wanted him out of the rotation.

Jason Schmidt couldn't make it out of the fourth inning against the Brewers on Wednesday, allowing four runs over 3 2/3 innings as part of a 4-1 loss.
After six scoreless innings last Friday, Schmidt labored against the Brewers, throwing just 45 of 80 pitches for strikes while walking three. His night came to an end in fourth inning after he hit Craig Counsell with the bases loaded. Schmidt now has a 5.61 ERA and 8/12 K/BB ratio in four starts this season. Stay away.

Jason Schmidt tossed six one-hit innings in a 5-0 win over the Braves on Friday night.
You have to feel good for the guy. All he gave up was a single to Chipper Jones in the third inning. He walked five and fanned three, improving to 2-1 with a 4.50 ERA through his first three starts. We're not sure how he'll get by with that batting practice fastball, but that can be a conversation for another day.

Dodgers manager Joe Torre has named Jason Schmidt as Friday's starter against the Braves.
Schmidt was rocked for five runs -- four earned -- in three-plus innings against the Marlins on Sunday. It was his second start after a nearly two-year layoff. Schmidt is not a recommended fantasy starter.
