Kelvim Escobar will make $1.25 million in his base salary for the Mets, reports ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.
If Escobar makes the Opening Day roster, he will earn a $125,000 bonus. He also has $2 million in incentives as a starter and $1 million as a reliever. The 33-year-old righty is expected to set up Francisco Rodriguez despite appearing in just one game over the past two years.

A source confirmed to the New York Post late Thursday night that the Mets have reached agreement on a contract with right-hander Kelvim Escobar.
Francisco Blavia of Venezuela's Lider en Deportes had the news first. Escobar somehow swayed the Mets into giving him a major league contract, though we don't yet know how low the base salary is or if incentives are involved. Chances are he won't have a whole lot of earning power. The 33-year-old has made just one major league appearance in the last two years but posted a 3.40 ERA over 30 starts in 2007. He will be asked to serve in a setup role behind closer Francisco Rodriguez.

According to Venezuelan reporter Francisco Blavia, the Mets have reached an agreement with right-hander Kelvim Escobar.
Blavia works for Lider en Deportes, a Spanish language news service that has been spot-on with a couple of other signings this winter. The Mets offered Escobar a minor league contract a few weeks ago, so the news is perfectly capable of being true. The 33-year-old right-hander has made just one major league appearance in the last two years but posted a 3.40 ERA over 30 appearances in 2007 and has a 4.15 ERA in 202 career starts.

According to Venezuelan reporter Efrain Zavarce, at least eight teams watched free agent Kelvim Escobar throw Wednesday in his home country.
Zavarce identified scouts from the Cubs, Brewers, Giants, Pirates, Tigers, Mariners, Athletics and Rays at the throwing session. Escobar, 33, has already been offered a minor league contract from Mets but is hoping to draw a major league deal. The 33-year-old posted a 3.40 ERA over 30 starts in 2007 and has a 4.15 ERA in 202 career major league starts, but he has made just one MLB appearance in the last two years.

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal confrims that the Mets have offered free agent right-hander Kelvim Escobar a minor league contract.
A Venezuelan journalist first had the news, but his report was in Spanish. Escobar is drawing enough interest that a minor league deal probably won't get it done. Teams are expected to take a look at him this week in Venezuela -- Wednesday during a simulated game and on Friday in live action. Escobar, 33, has made just one major league appearance in the last two years.
