Yankees signed 1B Nick Johnson to a one-year, $5.5 million contract with a $5.5 million mutual option for 2011.
Johnson, 31, finished with a solid .291/.426/.405 batting line in 2009 while collecting hit eight homers and 62 RBI in 457 at-bats. He will take over designated hitting duties in New York and is a strong enough defender that he could spell Mark Teixeira at first base once every few weeks. As long as Johnson can stay healthy, it seems like a solid deal for Yankees GM Brian Cashman and Co.

Ken Davidoff of Newsday reports that the Yankees and Nick Johnson are "wrapping up" a one-year deal worth $5.5 million.
Johnson will serve as the primary designated hitter for the Yankees in 2010, a spot held last year by Hideki Matsui. The 31-year-old Johnson finished with a solid .291/.426/.405 batting line in 2009 with eight homers and 62 RBI in 457 at-bats. It appears Johnny Damon will not be returning to the Bronx.

The Giants have increased their offer to free agent first baseman Nick Johnson, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com.
Johnson, 31, is reportedly discussing a one-year deal to be a designated hitter with the Yankees, but the Giants have improved their offer to somewhere in the $5.5-to-6 million range. The Mariners are also in the mix, according to Rosenthal, but it isn't known how much they are willing to commit financially.

With negotiations for free agent outfielder Johnny Damon at a standstill, the Yankees are in talks with Nick Johnson to be their designated hitter, reports Buster Olney of ESPN.com.
It could be a tactical move by general manager Brian Cashman, but Johnson's .426 on-base percentage -- highest among free agents -- would look awful good out of the No. 2 hole. That said, Damon offers the Yankees more durability and flexibility, allowing manager Joe Girardi the ability to slide players in and out of the designated hitter spot. The 31-year-old Johnson is believed to be seeking a two-year contract this winter.

The Yankees are speaking to Nick Johnson about joining the team as designated hitter, reports the New York Posts' George King.
Such a move would be curious simply because it would go against what GM Brian Cashman has publicly intended to do with the DH spot: swap it among his veterans to give them days off. Such a move would likely spell the end of Damon in New York, says King, as the team views him as a part-time DH.

Though he didn't reveal any names, Giants general manager Brian Sabean said he had offers on the table for more than one free agent.
"We’ve made a number of offers since we’ve been here and that includes multiple offers to the people we’re zeroing in on," said Sabean. "The agents aren’t necessarily ready to make a deal. We’ve identified what we think their value is against the type of contract we’d offer." Baggardly is confident that infielder-outfielder Mark DeRosa is one of them. Though it hasn't been confirmed, first baseman Nick Johnson and outfielder Scott Podsednik are also believed to have received offers.
