Johan Santana (elbow) tossed a 24-pitch side session on Tuesday.
Santana didn't throw very hard, according to reports, but we weren't expecting much from him considering it's still January. He underwent arthroscopic elbow surgery in September, yet he expects to be fine for the start of spring training and wants to take the mound on Opening Day. The Mets' plan calls for him to begin pitching in exhibition games in early March.

Johan Santana (elbow) vowed Monday that he will be ready for Opening Day.
"At this point I feel way ahead of what I was last year at this point. Definitely," said Santana, who took the hill for last year's season opener despite battling triceps tendinitis in spring training. "There's no question about it. I can't wait to be out in spring training and see where we're at to put everything together for Opening Day." The Mets ace finished last season with a 13-9 record and a 3.13 ERA in 25 starts. He will throw off a mound Tuesday.

Johan Santana is scheduled to test his elbow by throwing off a mound on Tuesday.
He will throw at New York's training complex. Santana is expected to be ready for opening day after having successful arthroscopic elbow surgery in September. "I'm feeling good. Time will tell, but I am feeling good," Santana said. "We did a pretty good job with the offseason, working out and doing all the rehab, and I'm feeling good. Everything is on schedule." The left-hander finished 2009 with a 13-9 record and 3.13 ERA in 25 starts.

Bill Madden of the New York Daily News says the Mets will have about $20 million to spend this offseason.
Madden says the Mets are certain to reduce their $147 million payroll and should be counted out of the Lackey, Holliday and Bay sweepstakes. Madden goes on to say that second-tier free agents should be their focus with priorities being left-field and two starting pitchers, naming Jason Marquis specifically. We're not sold that the Mets will walk away from the premier free agents just yet.

A Mets source close to Omar Minaya told Jon Heyman of SI.com that the reason Minaya still has his job is strictly because of the three-year extension the GM signed in October 2008.
Minaya is certainly on very thin ice, and Heyman believes manager Jerry Manuel is in a better position to last longer in the organization. The Mets are willing to spend in free agency, so Minaya will have the chance to build a contending team. If New York falls flat on their face again, you can bet Omar will be on the way out.

Johan Santana had successful arthroscopic elbow surgery Tuesday morning at New York's Hospital for Special Surgery.
Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek preformed the surgery and was able to safely remove multiple bone fragments from Santana's left elbow. The left-hander finished the year with a 13-9 record and 3.13 ERA in 25 starts, and is expected to make a full recovery by the start of spring training 2010.
