Brad Lidge (knee) and J.C. Romero (elbow) have begun throwing, reports Todd Zolecki of MLB.com.

Both believe they will be ready for the start of the season, and though general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. has said that Lidge is ahead of Romero, they appear to be pretty even with their respective rehab programs. Lidge underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee earlier this month, while Romero had surgery to repair a flexor tendon in his pitching elbow in October.

Brad Lidge (knee) believes he will be ready for the start of the season.

Lidge underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in mid-January but is already feeling some progress and expects to begin a throwing program early next week. "My knee’s feeling pretty good and my arm’s feeling great," said the Phillies closer. "My arm’s actually feeling stronger than it has in a long time. ... It’s just getting my legs strong enough. I want to be ready for the start of the season. That’s my goal. I still think it’s possible."

According to David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News, Brad Lidge (knee) should be able to begin a throwing program in 10 days.

Lidge underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Wednesday and could miss Opening Day, but team trainer Scott Sheridan doesn't expect him to be out much longer than that. The 33-year-old right-hander is also recovering from minor elbow surgery in November.

Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that Brad Lidge had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, leaving his status for Opening Day in doubt.

"We’re not sure if he’ll be ready by Opening Day, but we don’t expect that he’ll be too far behind," said team trainer Scott Sheridan. Lidge was sidelined with a sprained right knee in June, but the injury has persisted. He already underwent surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow in November, clouding his status for the start of Spring Training, but he'll almost certainly miss the beginning of the season, making Ryan Madson a valuable commodity, at least in the short-term.

Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com cites a person with knowledge of the situation that the Phillies have an agreement in place with a reliever.

Don't expect an official announcement until the first week of January. Salisbury speculates that it could be Danys Baez, but the Phillies have also been connected to Fernando Rodney and the recently non-tendered Mike MacDougal. Baez, 32, compiled a 4.02 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in '09. His career-high 60.9% groundball rate was among the league leaders.

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. hopes to improve the bullpen in the coming weeks, reports Todd Zolecki of MLB.com.

"We're getting closer on a couple of fronts, but nothing is a done deal," said Amaro. "Hopefully we'll be able to announce something within the next couple weeks." It was thought that the Phillies would sign two veterans to fortify their relief corps, but Amaro expressed a willingness to sign just one while giving a younger pitcher like a Sergio Escalona or Antonio Bastardo a chance to break through. With Chan Ho Park unlikely to return, the Phillies have been linked to Fernando Rodney, John Smoltz and Mike MacDougal in recent weeks, but there are increasing indications that the team is weighing other options.
