John Lackey's five-year, $82.8 million contract with the Red Sox includes a "conditional club option" for 2015 at the league minimum.
Interesting. The option would only kick in if an old elbow injury forces Lackey to miss significant time after surgery. The big-money deal deal is front-loaded, with $18 million in 2010 and $15,250,000 every year from 2011-2014. Lackey, 31, was 11-8 with 3.83 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over 27 starts last season.

 John Lackey-S - Red Sox Dec. 16 - 2:05 pm et

Red Sox signed RHP John Lackey to a five-year contract.
Terms were not disclosed, but Lackey is expected to earn the same $82.5 million contract awarded to A.J. Burnett of the Yankees last winter. Lackey, 31, was 11-8 with 3.83 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 09' and was widely referred to as the top free agent arm on the market. He won't have to be an ace with Boston though, as he'll likely slot behind Jon Lester and Josh Beckett as the club's No. 3 starter. Lackey is 102-71 with a 3.81 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over eight career seasons.

According to the Boston Globe, the contract agreement between the Red Sox and John Lackey is being held up "as the sides work out language that would protect the Red Sox from a pre-existing medical issue."
This is just the Red Sox covering their bases, as they did in 2007 with J.D. Drew, who eventually signed a five-year, $70-million deal. When Lackey finally puts his name on the dotted line, he is expected to earn $82.5 million over five years.

Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that John Lackey's contract with the Red Sox mirrors that of A.J. Burnett of the Yankees.
There's been some confusion about the total, however Lackey will earn $82.5 million over the length of the five-year contract -- the exact same deal that Burnett inked with the Bombers last December. According to Olney, the contract does not include any bonuses or extras.

According to Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman, the Red Sox and John Lackey have agreed to a five-year, $85 million deal.
If true, this is a great move for the Red Sox -- signing a top-tier starter to a market-value contract while snatching him from a fellow American League contender. Lackey figures to be Boston's No. 3 starter. The right-hander went 11-8 with a 3.83 ERA in 27 starts for the Angels in 2009.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com confirms that John Lackey is taking a physical with the Red Sox.
Rosenthal takes it one step further, saying that the deal is likely to be similar to A.J. Burnett's five-year, $82.5 million deal signed last year. Assuming the deal is consummated, Lackey figures to be Boston's No. 3 starter. The right-hander went 11-8 with a 3.83 ERA in 27 starts. Let the Adrian Gonzalez rumors begin again.
