Chone Figgins said Tuesday that he's hoping to bat second in the Mariners' batting order next season.
"I was just personally thinking that Ichiro [Suzuki] is obviously one of the best leadoff hitters in the game,'' Figgins said. "He's able to do what he's doing in the one-spot, so I figure with me plugged into the two-spot, being a little more patient at the plate, it makes an even more dangerous tandem." Ichiro had a .386 on-base percentage in 2009 while Figgins posted an exceptional .395 mark. That's a heck of a one-two punch to kick off the Seattle batting order and should set up RBI opportunities for the rest of the lineup.

The Associated Press reports that the Mariners have a preliminary agreement with free agent third baseman Chone Figgins on a four-year, $36 million contract.

Jayson Stark of ESPN.com reports that the Mariners' proposed four-year, $36 million offer to Chone Figgins also includes a vesting option for 2014 that would increase the total value of the contract to $45 million.
A source familiar with the club's negotiations told ESPN that the two sides were "very close" to finishing off a deal. Even though the Mariners are heavy favorites to land Figgins at this point, there are some indications that the Angels aren't completely out of the running.

Larry LaRue of the News Tribune reports that Chone Figgins' contract with the Mariners likely won't be made official until Monday.
One significant reason, the Mariners are currently waiting to see if Adrian Beltre accepts arbitration before the Monday deadline. According to reports, Figgins is expected to sign a four-year contract with the Mariners worth roughly $9 million per season.
