Jose Contreras told Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. that he's willing to play any role for the Phillies this season.
"I think his quote was, 'I'd be willing to pick up bats if you need me to,' " Amaro joked. "So I think he's pretty much amenable to anything." The 38-year-old had a 4.92 overall ERA last season but posted a 1.59 ERA and 17/8 K/BB ratio in seven games (two starts) once he joined the Rockies. He's likely to find a few starts in the early going while Jamie Moyer (hernia, knee) recovers.

Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports that the signing of right-hander Jose Contreras is likely the team's final offseason move.
The Phillies have added Roy Halladay to their rotation, Placido Polanco to play third base, Ross Gload, Brian Schneider and Juan Castro for their bench and Danys Baez and Contreras for their bullpen, so aside from a possible minor league deal, they appear pretty well set to break camp. There have been some whispers about the team maintaining interest in Pedro Martinez, but they could look to sign him in-season if the veteran right-hander is still available.

Phillies signed RHP Jose Contreras to a one-year, $1.5 million contract.
Contreras flirted with the idea of going to Japan, but has a fine chance of success by staying in the National League. The (alleged) 38-year-old was 6-13 with a 4.92 ERA last season, but posted a 1.59 ERA and 17/8 K/BB ratio in seven games (two starts) with the Rockies down the stretch. It's a pretty small sample size, but he still possesses nice velocity and averaged 7.25 K/9 last season, his highest since 2004. He should remain in the bullpen, but could be called upon for a few starts if Jamie Moyer isn't ready to start the season.

Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes reports that the Phillies have signed right-hander Jose Contreras to a one-year contract.
Contreras drew a surprising amount of interest from teams this winter, mostly from the National League. The 38-year-old had a 1.59 ERA and 17/8 K/BB ratio during seven appearances (two starts) with the Rockies near the end of the 2009 season after a tough run with the White Sox. The Phils are likely to use him as a long reliever.

The Cubs, Cardinals, Rockies, Phillies and Padres are among the teams interested in free agent right-hander Jose Contreras, according to Ken Davidoff of New York Newsday.
It's a tremendously small sample size, but the veteran right-hander tallied a 1.59 ERA and 17/8 K/BB ratio in seven appearances (two starts) with the Rockies last season, so it's no surprise to see him matching up with a National League team once again. It isn't known whether any of the teams mentioned still view him as a starting pitcher.

The Rockies continue to talk with the agent for free agent right-hander Jose Contreras, reports Troy Renck of the Denver Post.
Contreras has flirted with the idea of a move to Japan, but may find himself back with the team he closed the season with in 2009. The veteran right-hander tallied a 1.59 ERA and 17/8 K/BB ratio in seven appearances (two starts) with the Rockies last season, even pitching his way onto the NLDS roster. Colorado would like to bring Contreras back as an option out of the bullpen, but as of now, his price is too steep.
