| Jose Contreras's 2010 Profile | | No one told Contreras that a torn Achilles’ tendon was a 9-12 month injury. He was ready to go last spring after getting hurt in August, and he was named the White Sox’s fourth starter to begin the season. Unfortunately, an 0-5 start followed, and he was sent down on May 11 with his ERA sitting at 8.19. He returned a month later and improved for a time, but he was bounced from the rotation again in late August and traded to the Rockies prior to the postseason roster deadline. In Colorado, he posted a 1.59 ERA in two starts and five relief appearances. Contreras’ rough season was mostly a product of some struggles from the stretch. He posted his highest strikeout rate since 2004. Skepticism about his ability to hold up as a starter hurt his market over the winter, and there was talk that he might continue his career in Japan, but he eventually found his way to a one-year contract with the Phillies in January. If he ends up finding a rotation spot, he’ll be worth keeping an eye on.
