Mets signed OF Jason Bay to a four-year, $66 million contract with a $17 million vesting option for 2014.
The deal will pay him an $8.5 million signing bonus and comes with a full no-trade clause. He'll earn $6.5 million in 2010 and $16 million from 2011-2013. The option for 2014 would become guaranteed if Bay makes 600 plate appearances in 2013 or 500 PAs in both 2012 and 2013. It's a fine deal for a team like the Mets, who can afford the hefty contract. Bay, 31, hit .267/.384/.537 with 36 home runs, 119 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 531 at-bats last season and will add some necessary "pop" to the Mets' lineup.

According to SNY, Jason Bay has passed his physical with the Mets.
With the physical now complete, the Mets will put a bow on the signing with a introductory press conference scheduled for Tuesday at 11 a.m. ET. The Mets have reportedly inked the 31-year-old outfielder to a four-year, $66 million contract with a vesting option for a fifth year that could bring the total to over $80 million.

Jason Bay is scheduled to undergo his physical for the Mets on Monday.
The Mets are expected to take a long, hard look at Bay's ankles, wrists and shoulders, but he played 151 games in 2009, 155 in '08, and should ultimately pass. If (or when) he does, the Mets will make the outfielder's four-year, $66 million contract official with a formal press conference.

Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse believes that Jason Bay's contract with the Mets is worth $66 million over four years with a $17 million vesting option, bringing the total to $80 million over five years.
It doesn't make a whole lot of sense on the surface, but his best guess is that it becomes $66 million over four years if the fifth year option doesn't vest -- in other words, he would receive a $3 million buyout. If the option vests as easily as many expect it will, most likely with a games played clause, Bay will simply earn $80 million over the course of five years. Bay will have to pass a physical before the contract is official.

SI.com's Jon Heyman suggests Jason Bay's physical examination for the Mets might not be a formality and could turn into a "marathon."
The Red Sox found medical issues with the 31-year-old outfielder when they traded for him in 2008 and the same problems may prevent a smooth finalization of Bay's rumored four-year, $66 million deal with the Mets. An official announcement of the signing is not expected until early next week, so the two sides do have some time to work out any complications.

ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick reports that the fifth year vesting option on Jason Bay's contract could push its total value over $80 million.
In other words, the option is worth close to the $16.5 million Bay will earn annually on his new four-year, $66 million deal with the Mets. It's a hefty price to pay, especially with the outfielder drawing little interest from other clubs, but Mets GM Omar Minaya tends to work in mysterious ways. Money aside -- if that's ever possible -- Bay is a nice addition to the Mets' batting order and should do fine in Citi Field over the course of his contract.
