Packers C Jason Spitz, out for the season, reportedly underwent surgery this week to repair a herniated disc in his back.
There's no word yet on Spitz's expected recovery time. He's a free agent after the season, and the Packers may be looking to turn the page at center.

Packers placed C Jason Spitz (back) on injured reserve, ending his season.
Spitz was expected to play a big role this year after he beat out incumbent center Scott Wells, who will now continue to start. Spitz hasn't practiced since Oct. 15. He's a free agent after this season.

 Allen Barbre-T - Packers Aug. 24 - 9:39 pm et

The Packers have formally named Allen Barbre their starting right tackle and Josh Sitton their starting right guard.
Barbre (6'4/305) will be one of the NFL's smaller strong-side tackles, but he's also one of the most athletic. It's good news for Aaron Rodgers' protection and Ryan Grant on zone runs. C Jason Spitz will start over Scott Wells.

Packers beat writer Rob Demovsky expects Jason Spitz to win the starting center job this season.
Spitz is battling veteran Scott Wells, who Demovsky believes is on the way out. Last year's fourth-rounder, Josh Sitton, would then move into the starting lineup at right guard.

The Packers are giving thought to converting RG Jason Spitz to a full-time center.

 Scott Wells-C - Packers Jan. 1 - 10:27 am et

Packers C Scott Wells will undergo offseason surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder.
Three-fifths of the Packers offensive line will have surgery in the next two weeks, with Chad Clifton (knee, arthroscopic) and Mark Tauscher (torn ACL) also going under the knife. Wells will have to compete with Jason Spitz for the starting center job next season. Spitz was the team's starting right guard in 2008, but promising Josh Sitton is ticked for that role in 2009.
