Jeff Francis told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick Tuesday that his left (throwing) shoulder no longer causes him pain or discomfort.
Francis is spending the next several days at the Rockies' Dominican training facility in order to prepare for the start of spring training. "I feel good," Francis said by phone. "I'm not thinking about the injury anymore, which is nice. Last summer was a grind mentally more than anything." The left-hander struggled to a 5.01 ERA in 24 starts in 2008, but is just a few years removed from the 17-9 record and 4.22 ERA he posted back in '07.

Jeff Francis (shoulder) plans to head to the Rockies' Dominican training facility in February for a tune-up.
Francis underwent surgery on his throwing shoulder before spring training last season and missed the entire year. He'll throw side sessions and may even face some batters during his time at the facility. "It should give me a little a head start. I am hoping to get in a simulated game and some good workouts," he said. "I am anxious to get back out there on a mound in spring training." The lefty went 17-9 with a 4.22 ERA back in 2007.

Jeff Francis (shoulder) expects to be at full strength by spring training.
Francis missed all of the 2009 season after undergoing shoulder surgery in February and struggled to a 5.01 ERA over 24 starts in '08. He's back to full health, though, and believes things will go better next year. "I can go out and play catch without a trainer," Francis said. "I can throw with the guys. My shoulder feels smooth, feels stronger than before."

 Jeff Francis-S - Rockies Sep. 24 - 11:34 pm et

Jeff Francis (shoulder surgery) tossed three innings Thursday afternoon in the Rockies' fall instructional league.
Francis threw 47 pitches, with his fastball topping out at 89 mph. He's a long way from returning to form, but is at least on the right track and should be good to go by the start of spring training 2010.

 Jeff Francis-S - Rockies Sep. 20 - 8:58 am et

Jeff Francis (shoulder surgery) is scheduled to pitch in the Rockies' fall instructional league.
Francis went under the knife during spring training and is making excellent progress. He's expected to be ready for the start of spring training in 2010, and a strong showing in the club's instructional league will only give the Rox more confidence. Francis went 17-9 with a 4.22 ERA in 2007, but faltered in 2008, finishing 4-10 with an ugly 5.01 earned-run average.
