The Padres and RHP Heath Bell avoided arbitation Friday by agreeing to one-year, $4 million contract.
It's a well deserved raise from the $1.255 million Bell made last season. He had a fantastic year, compiling a 2.71 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and an NL-leading 42 saves in 68 appearances on a bad Padres team. The right-hander should be selected among fantasy's top closers this season.

Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune reports that the Cubs are "kicking the tires again" on Padres closer Heath Bell.
The Padres haven't seemed open to moving Bell at all this winter but may reconsider at the right price. The San Diego closer had a superb 2009 season, tallying a 2.71 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 42 saves in 68 appearances. He would probably snatch closing duties from Carlos Marmol in Chicago.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that three or four teams are interested in the Padres' Heath Bell, but the team is "not really looking" to move him at this point.
As well they shouldn't. Most teams have their closers lined up for next season, so the Padres won't get maximum value at this time. They may reconsider as the trade deadline approaches. Bell, 32, was excellent in 2009, tallying a 2.71 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 42 saves in 68 appearances.

The Rangers have inquired about Heath Bell, but the club likely can't fulfill the Padres' need for catching until the status of Jarrod Saltalamacchia is clear, according to the Dallas Morning News' Evan Grant.
Saltalamacchia was sent home from the Dominican Winter League with shoulder soreness a few weeks ago. The Rangers likely won't know about his status for the 2010 season until spring training gets underway. "Until we know with any certainty what the situation is with Jarrod, it's unlikely we'd consider trading anybody," GM Jon Daniels said.

 Carlos Marmol-R - Cubs Dec. 7 - 2:44 pm et

Cubs manager Lou Piniella reiterated Monday that the Cubs are "set" with Carlos Marmol at closer and are "very happy with him."
The Cubs have been linked recently to Padres closer Heath Bell, but wild speculation tends to run rampant in the baseball world at this time of year. Or perhaps the rumors are true and they would like to add him as a setup man. Either way, it appears Marmol will open 2010 as Chicago's ninth-inning man.

According to Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune, the Padres are talking with teams about Heath Bell and the Cubs are among those with interest.
Bell, 32, had a superb 2009 season, finishing with a 2.71 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 42 saves in 68 appearances. The Padres are likely to ask for a nice package of prospects in return for the closer. He was also shopped at this year's trade deadline and drew interest from multiple teams.
