Doug Free is expected this offseason to get a chance to unseat Marc Colombo for the Cowboys' starting right tackle job.
Free offers more athleticism and upside in pass protection than Colombo, who turns 32 next season and was whipped by Vikings LE Ray Edwards for three sacks and countless more QB hurries in Dallas' playoff loss. Colombo is still a superior run blocker, however, and won't go down without a fight.

Playing for the first time since Week 11, Cowboys RT Marc Colombo didn't come out of the game Saturday night.
The plan was to rotate Doug Free in, but Colombo felt good and said there was no need for him to come off the field. The Cowboys' offensive line is clicking and will get a big test from the Vikings' front four next week.

Beat writer Charean Williams thinks that Doug Free has shown he is the Cowboys' left tackle of the future.
Flozell Adams will turn 35 in May and will probably start thinking about retirement soon. Free got his chance when RT Marc Colombo went down in Week 10 and has impressed the organization -- including owner Jerry Jones.

Cowboys RT Marc Colombo (ankle, leg) is getting close to returning but is likely targeting the first week of the playoffs.
The Cowboys haven't missed Colombo too much because Doug Free has come in and played outstanding. We wouldn't be surprised if Free stays in the lineup for at least the first playoff game.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones believes he has a keeper in RT Doug Free, forced into the lineup after Marc Colombo was injured.
Jones used the 2007 fourth-rounder as an example of how young players progress when they get playing time. "As we look to our decisions in the offensive line, we know we’ve got a player in Doug Free," said Jones. Colombo is signed through 2013 as a reasonable salary.
