Texans coach Gary Kubiak revealed in an interview with The Score 1510 in Denver that Steve Slaton underwent surgery to repair nerve damage in his neck in mid-January.
Kubiak believes the nerve issue may have been at the root of Slaton's fumbling problems last season. Beat writer John McClain has reported that the injury is not career-threatening, and Slaton is expected to eventually get back to 100 percent. The surgery, however, makes it even less likely that he'll be counted on for the featured back role in 2010. The Texans are expected to make running back a priority on draft day.

 Steve Slaton-RB - Texans Jan. 21 - 10:59 am et

Beat writer John McClain believes the Texans' biggest draft need this offseason is a "running back they can count on."
"A back who'll be durable and dependable and not have health issues or fumble issues or both," continues McClain. The Texans clearly can't count on Steve Slaton to carry the load after his disappointing season, and Arian Foster's strong finish doesn't equate to "dependable." Georgia Tech's Jonathan Dwyer is a possibility for Houston.

 Arian Foster-RB - Texans Jan. 4 - 2:42 pm et

The Texans offensive line is pulling for Arian Foster to remain the team's feature back.
The running game finally clicked for the first time when Foster took over, and the offensive line wants him "toting the rock." It's hard to picture Steve Slaton regaining the early-down job, but the Texans may look to bolster the position in the draft to add stability.

The Houston Chronicle "assumes" the Texans will focus heavily on running back in April's draft.
Steve Slaton remains a premier passing-down back, but his 3.1 yards per carry average, fumbling issues, and neck injury don't inspire confidence that he can be the lead dog. Arian Foster could enter the 2010 picture with another strong performance this week.

If the nerve damage in Steve Slaton's neck doesn't get better in six weeks, he'll consider surgery according to beat writer John McClain.
The injury is not career threatening, even if Slaton does end up needing the surgery. He's expected return at 100 percent. Even so, expect the Texans to make running back a top priority this offseason. Slaton will likely return as a third-down and change-of-pace back.

Steve Slaton's teammates were reportedly joking about him being "chunky" during the offseason.
The Texans asked Slaton to add weight so he could handle the pounding a feature back takes in the NFL. Instead, the extra bulk slowed Slaton down. He was drafted to be a change-of-pace, third-down back, and that's likely how he'll be used in 2010 after the team adds an early-down back in the draft or free agency.
